It was the middle of the night when it happened. ChiChi was in a light sleep. Even after an exhausting day of housework and taking care of Gohan she still found it hard to rest.
Goku had gone off to train, as usual, only coming back to eat and play with Gohan for a little while before wandering off to train again.
ChiChi couldn't help it. She loved the big goof to death, but he was such a bumpkin. He didn't seem to know anything about babies, except how to entertain them. She wished he would do more with Gohan.
ChiChi had just managed to fall into a complete slumber when she heard a strange noise. It was loud and demanding. It sounded like someone wailing. She woke and sat up.
It was Gohan.
ChiChi sighed wearily and looked over at her husband only to find that he was gone.
He probably went for another midnight snack, she thought. ChiChi crawled out of bed and reached for her lacy white night robe hanging on the bedpost. She had her arm halfway through the first sleeve when Gohan's cries abruptly stopped. She froze in panic.
What happened to my baby?
Not stopping to drop the robe, ChiChi ran out of the bedroom with it trailing behind her. She dashed down the hall to Gohan's room and when she reached the doorway, breathing hard, eyes wide and prepared for the worst, she was met with the most precious sight she had ever seen in her life.
There was Goku, sitting in the rocking chair with Gohan in his arms, making soft, cooing noises. He whispered things in Gohan's ear that she couldn't quite make out. Gohan seemed to understand it, though, as he giggled in response to the whispers.
ChiChi watched and smiled, all worry and panic forgotten, as Goku tilted his head and let a few tendrils of his bizarre hair tickle Gohan's nose. The little boy grabbed, pulled and squealed in delight as his father laughed in response to his antics.
Soon, Gohan's eyes drifted shut and he slept soundly once again to Goku's rhythmic rocking and shushing noises. Then, Goku stood and gently set Gohan in his crib.
ChiChi was astonished. She couldn't believe what she was seeing.
She smiled as something occurred her.
She didn't want Goku to wear a suit and necktie everyday. She didn't want him to give her a kiss on the cheek every morning before he went to his desk job in the city. She didn't want Goku to play baseball with Gohan everyday when he got older. She also had no expectations that Goku would take it upon himself to give Gohan "the talk". All that she wanted from Goku was the reassurance that he would be there for her and Gohan when they needed him the most.
Watching him tonight, ChiChi had no doubt her mind that he would give her and Gohan everything they would ever need.
