Seeing you again
Was like meeting for the first time
In a foggy dream so many years ago.
Strangers in an airport
Searching for a word to break the ice.

Seeing you Again by Dan Fogelberg

_____

It's still there:

They both just stood there not speaking to one another when she finally
found the courage to speak the first words, hoping he wouldn't discover the
strange sound in her voice.
Before she could speak he already said the first words and somehow she was
happy he did, even though she was about to speak she didn't know what to
say. He'd faded and now he was back in her memory, more clear then before,
she's still on fire when he's near her, she's still on fire when he speaks.
Even though his words were simple, she needed to hear them to come back
down to earth. The words he said reached her but before she could react he
already made them true and he was gone.
She hurried to find her way to the benches so she wouldn't faint, she hated
this feeling, it felt like she was betraying her man once again and she
didn't want to, but on the other hand, this was what she longed for the
moment she stepped out of the mystery man's bed a year ago.

He turned around to see her one more time but she was already gone. He was
so sure, the last thing he would see of her was when she fell asleep in his
arms a year ago, he never dared to dream of a meeting between them and if
he did, he would never expect it to be on a airport on the other side of
the country.
But it happend and once again there was a feeling burning inside of him, a
feeling he shed of some time ago, a time which seemed ages.
He felt like he didn't had another choice but sit and wait for the person
that would pick him up.
When nobody approched him after an hour or so he decided he would take a
cab.
During his ride to this strange little town in the back of Conneticut he
thought about the memories that came back, memories of a year ago, he could
somehow still taste her, the moment lasted forever but ended so soon.
When he finally entered his uncles diner he was welcomed by him and his
fiancee.
She immediatly asked where her daughter was but he answered he didn't see
her and after an hour he left. Off course they were in panic but soon she
called and her mother was put at ease. His uncle told him he could stay in
his appartment as long as he wanted and so he started unpacking upstairs.
Every once in a while he heard people entering the diner and there was
nothing strange about it but then he heard a male voice talking to a woman,
probably her daughter, and the woman complained to the man.
She told him she spent a whole day driving and waiting for somebody who
didn't arrive, then his uncle called him to meet the woman he was suppose
to meet at the airport. When he arrived downstairs he couldn't find her,
she was hidden behind her mother and she was turned with her back towards
me, as soon as her mother stepped aside his uncle yelled, I like you to
meet my soon to be stepdaughter.
And when she turned around she turned completly pale and so did he.
She heard her mother asking her if she was okay and the man that was with
her asked her the same.
This time the man was at a complete loss for words and there was no way he
could run just like he did on the airport earlier, and that's why he was so
thankful when she finally said that she was fine and there was nothing
wrong with her.
So she shook his hand, feeling his touch which made her blush, and he tanked
her she was leading this conversation cause he still felt like he was hit
by lightning.

When he came back to earth his uncle suggested they all ate dinner
together, at first he wanted to reject because he was afraid somebody would
notice the tension between the beautiful woman and him, but his uncle
looked at him with pleading eyes and he just couldn't reject.
During dinner neither one of them spoke, her mother was as cheerful as ever
making his uncle practically go insane.
Trying to tell each other what they were thinking they exchanged looks
every now and then and it seemed nobody noticed.
But that wasn't true, the woman's boyfriend did notice and as soon as they
were done eating dinner he demanded to leave.
She cave in and they left, she knew she was in some kind of trouble because
he had said it in a too serious tone that she only heard right before he
hit her a couple of years ago.
When they got home she knew she was right and all hell broke loose.
He yelled at her at the top of his longs and she just sat there listening
to it. He asked her what was going on with her and the new guy and she told
him it was nothing.
But he didn't believe her and finally she made up some kind of lie that he
would believe.
She told him she did see him at the airport but that she didn't know it was
him, she was too ashamed to tell her mothers fiancee since he was his
nephew. But he didn't let her of the hook that easy and he asked her why
she was ashamed, the lying had become easy over the years and soon she had
found a answer on that question as well. She made up a whole story and he
believed it.
He told her he was getting some sleep since he had to get up early next
morning but she didn't want to be so close to him, especially not now,
that's why she told him she would join him later.
She just needed to get out, maybe one other night doing exactly what she
wants, but this wasn't the time, she couldn't abandon her mother only 2
days before her wedding, she needed her too bad now.
So instead of hitting the road, she took a walk around town.
When she was half way she met him once again and this time it was time for
a confrontation.
When she walked closer to him she became more and more insecure and all the
sanity flew out of her.

"Hi"
He didn't see her before but when she greeted her he greeted her back and
he saw some kind of relief in her eyes. They started walking and there was
a comfortable silence surrounding them, just like in the car a year ago.
But they both felt things needed to be said and so he was the one that
spoke first, he told her how sorry he was he didn't say anything at dinner
earlier this night and she told him she understood because she felt exactly
the same. Then a slight smile appeared his face, it was the same kind of
smile she had seen only one time before, and the more time she spent with
him the more her feelings started to return.
She didn't even know if she should call this feelings, maybe it was just
some kind of passion that was building inside of her, the kind of passion
that was at the point of exploding whenever he was around. But she needed
to stay in control, she wasn't on the other side of the country this time,
she couldn't give in to what she was feeling and this time there were so
many thigs different. Like he was her mothers fiancee's nephew.
The comfortable feeling was gone and there was a lot of tension instead,
she asked him if they could just forget about what had happend, it was just
a one time thing and it didn't mean anything.
While she told him this, he looked away for a couple of times and she kind
of hoped he told her he didn't want to forget it, to tell her it wasn't a
mistake, she needed to be convinced that what she felted that night wasn't
a mistake. But instead he nodded and agreed with every sentence she spoke.
She felt like crying but didn't know why and the tears that she wanted to
let down didn't come, she told him goodnight and she said to him she was
glad they could leave it behind them, but only she knew it wasn't true and
there was only one thing she wanted at this moment and it surely wasn't
returning home.
