The Most Beautiful Moment

Chapter 2: All in a Life

Marik sat silently at his table, serenely gripping a cup of tea. The peace of the apartment was broken by the sound of rushing water, as the temperate liquid filled a bathtub in the other room. He sighed to himself, wondering why their lives were addicted to all the drama they had endured.

'I hate this,' he muttered to himself. 'I hate it all.' His head rested on the table and his thoughts slowly leaked from him. His hair drooped by the side of his face, sheltering him; protecting him. His heartbeat was slow, resting from the stress of everything that happened. Every pulse was a fatal countdown, and all he desired was for it to be the last he'd ever suffer. Not far from him, the water continued to trickle along Yugi's slender leg. His mauve hair decorated him, like a tapestry of gold adorns a castle wall. His slim hands danced in and out of the water, playing lightly in the calm setting.

"Marik," he called out softly. "Marik!" The empty apartment captured his voice, drawing into the silent abyss. The walls seemed to close in on him, confining him like a cage. Yugi called out louder, his voice straining to regain its strength. His footsteps were rhythmic as they treaded to the washroom. A small knock at the door assured him he was there.

"Come in," Yugi said. The door opened slowly, and Marik looked down at his lover. The water he sat in was stained red with the blood of his wounds. It brought tears to his eyes, but he couldn't bear to show them – so he held them back. "I can't believe this."

"It's not a big deal, just clean yourself up," he hid his true feelings very well, and lied without any hesitation. Fact was, it bothered him, a lot. But he couldn't show his sadness - they needed to stay strong.

"It IS a big deal!" Yugi couldn't hold back the tears from his anger. "How can you say that!!" His hands covered his face as he broke into hysteria. Through the tears his breath was stifled and hasty.

"Yugi, calm yourself,"

"I don't believe this,"

"Believe what?" His whispers echoed his lover's ears. The millennium puzzle's golden shimmer sat on the counter, lifeless. Yugi was silently sobbing to himself as his arms clenched his legs and drew them to his chest. He gazed into Marik's eyes, the mauve colour of his hair dimly reflected in them. A single tear fell into the blood stained pool, and as Yugi stared into the recesses of his mind he only found confusion, and chaos.

"I don't believe you,"

That night, Yugi stayed at Marik's apartment again. He always considered living with him, but it had never come up. But Yugi slept on the couch this time.

*

"Yugi, look - what happened, happened"

"But that doesn't make it alright!"

"I never said it did! Why do you always have to jump to conclusions?!"

"I don't! But you don't seem to even care!"

The night was still young, from the couch he could hear the old grandfather clock striking 11. The memories of the night were harsh ones, and they pried at him, draining him of every emotion that he possibly had. He held his breath, feeling the need for air burn inside him.

'Great,' he thought. 'I'm still alive,' Elsewhere, Marik also thought of the evening's events. He tried to convince himself that he was angry, but that just hurt him even more. He felt terrible, his insides aching from the emotional pain. He knew what he had to do, and as much as his pride ate at his sanity, he gathered himself out of bed, and began to slink toward the living room. The moonlight shone through the window, reflecting off all the objects in the room. Outside, the call of the nightingale rung in dusky scenery, echoing inside the shallow rooms.

"Yugi?" he whispered. The room was dark, and the small shadow that merged with the couch wasn't moving.

'Must be sleeping already,' he thought. He slowly crept over to the sleeping boy and kissed his cheek. He sighed and put his hand on his.

"I'm sorry," he said. "I'm sorry for everything." There was no response, and Marik decided to spend the rest of the night with him in his arms. He loved him so much, and he would never forget to tell him that ever again.

Ever.

The sun broke through the night and shone its radiance on the sleeping couple. The large antique clock rang its strike of 8, and Marik realized that they were both late for school.

"Oh no!" he said loudly. He jumped up and started shaking Yugi, but he slipped. He looked down at his foot, and saw that he cracked something. Confused, he reached down and picked up the pieces of broken plastic.

"No," he whispered. "NOO! Holy shit wake up! WAKE UP YUGI PLEASE!" His eyes filled with tears, his heart raced in a panicked frenzy. "YUGI PLEASE DON'T!!! I'M SORRY!" He was shouting and furiously shaking Yugi. He scream in a chaotic rage, smashing everything he could get a hold on. He tossed the table, smashing its simple glass frame into a million pieces. He pushed over the TV and all the plants, and sparks flew about him. He continued to scream uncontrollably, and violently destroyed everything in sight. He grabbed Yugi and shook him hard, screaming his name. When he realized he wasn't going to respond he fell into a pile of his own tears and blood, glass piercing his gentle body. "No," he stuttered through his tears. "No…"

He continued to cry for hours, and chose that he would not leave his side. His hand grew cold in his and Marik's tears stained not only his face but Yugi's, as his lips gently caressed his in a final kiss. He opened his hand slowly and looked at the shattered plastic in his hand.

It was a prescription bottle.
