The Darkness Inside of Her
By: dragonfly-rising
"Come on Serena you're late!" Raye yelled over her shoulder as she exited the dojo after the other Sailor Scouts.
"I'm coming just hold on!" Serena yelled back.
She looked at herself in the full-length mirror on the wall of the dojo. She looked the same on the outside, she always did, and she took great pains in making sure of that. Her hair still cascaded from the familiar buns from atop her head. She was only slightly taller then she had been when she first found out she was Sailor Moon. Her eyes still were the same clear blue, though more often then not they darkened with her emotions, this she could explain away with silly comments about worrying over Darien.
She snorted indelicately. Yes they always believed her when she spun some stupid tale of how she thought Darien might not love her anymore. They would clamor to her defense and tell her she was overreacting and she would agree finally with much effort on their part. She felt bad for deceiving the others but she just couldn't bring herself to tell them what was really on her mind during those times. At the moment though her eyes were a dark blue a sign that she was filled trepidation.
She always felt this way prior to activating her broach so that she could transform and train with the others. There had been a time when she had been hopeful that the changes would not happen, that it was just an accident. That seemed like a lifetime ago a time when she was innocent and able to not look at the broach itself as a traitor.
She sighed to herself as the memories of that first time flooded her mind.

"Hurry up meatball head this was your idea you know" Raye said scathingly.
Serena nodded absently as the Senshi of Mars hurried outside. She was late as usual, not on purpose. The idea of sharing a quick sundae with Molly at the arcade had been too much of a temptation to resist. So now she had Raye annoyed with her, which she shrugged off easily. It was a natural happenstance between the two of them, nothing to be overly concerned about. She put her school bag aside quickly and touched her broach to begin her transformation. She closed her eyes in anticipation of the euphoric thrill that went through her every time she transformed into her alter Sailor Moon. Only this time when she was swept up into the magic it came with a new twist of coldness she had never felt before. Shaken by the unusual feeling she had glanced over at the mirror only to find herself transfixed by what she saw.
Her normally blonde hair was now fringed with ominous silver that appeared to give off a faint glow. Her outfit shimmered with the normal rainbow of color except now varying shades of gray twisted around the edging. Her tiara had changed in color as well, being silver instead of gold. Her boots were a dark gray and she shifted her feet nervously.
~ What's going on? ~ She asked herself feeling terrified tears well up in her eyes.
It was so wrong; she didn't look anything like Sailor Moon anymore. Trembling hands slipped up to timidly touch the new color in her hair. She stepped closer to the mirror hoping against hope that she was hallucinating, but her image remained the same. It was horribly real.
"SERENA!" a shout from Raye interrupted her and she jumped.
Looking fearfully at the door she brought out her transformation pen.
"Make me look like Sailor Moon," She whispered to it.
Within moments she was clad in her normal outfit shifting to make sure there was no flaw in the illusion. She could find none and quickly put the pen away, running to join the others before one of them barged in to see what was keeping her.
~* End Flashback *~
She bit her lip, as she triggered her transformation no longer aware of any thrill to the enhancements that came with the magic. She opened her eyes to find the abnormally suited Senshi that she had become used to seeing, a wave of resignation flowing over her. She knew she could not possibly be Sailor Moon anymore. The transformation pen returning her to her normal guise took care of that; it wouldn't change her to Sailor Moon if she started out that way. She took the pen out and triggered it as well.
She studied herself in the mirror, still apprehensive of the changes showing through. No flaw showed itself and she felt an incomprehensible sliver of disappointment slip through her. There were times she wished the transformation pen would not work its magic, that someone would see the difference in her and hold it up to the light for all to see. No such luck, the pen had worked. Her secret was safe for yet another day.
Putting a fake smile on she ran out to the others.
