The Darkness Inside of Her
By: dragonfly-rising
Serena whirled around. A young woman she had never seen before stood there with a serious expression on her face. Her skin seemed a dark brown in the harsh lighting of the track field. Her long black hair hung down to her waist, held back by a headband with strange designs on it. Serena studied her face noting high cheekbones and a slightly hawkish nose. The woman had spoken in heavily accented Japanese and Serena could not identify her accent.
"What?" She asked reflexively.
"You cannot escape what you've become...you know that" the woman said.
The words stung Serena, "What do you want?"
The woman cocked her head to the side, "I wanted to speak with you. You are on a dangerous course Serena, if you do not turn away soon it will be too late for you."
"Listen..." Serena began angrily.
"Sheana" supplied the woman with a slight bow of her head.
"That's great...listen Sheana as interesting as this conversation is I would much rather you just went and kept to your own business. I have nothing to say or offer to you" Serena snapped.
She couldn't understand what this woman wanted though she had suspicions that the woman was alluding to very private issues. She was not about to discuss things with this stranger that she would not with those she cared about and she felt insulted that this woman was acting so familiar with her.
Sheana took a step forward and for the first time Serena noted her outfit. The woman was clad in a short wrap around skirt crossed with colors Serena was sure held deep significance to the woman. Her top was form fitting and sleeveless. Two armbands wrapped around each of her upper arms and matched the headband across her forehead. Serena's mind automatically compared it to Senshi outfits and she knew this was not an everyday way of dressing for the woman. A strong sense of power emanated from Sheana and Serena found herself tensing even though Sheana had not made an overly threatening move against her. Serena also found herself feeling vulnerable in the light- jogging outfit she had on.
"Who are you?" Serena finally asked suspiciously.
"I am hoping a friend Serena. I have no quarrel with you at the moment but that may change. I only wish to warn you, to help you avoid a terrible ordeal." Sheana said earnestly.
"Warn me about what?"
Sheana frowned, "There is a great well of darkness inside of you though no fault of your own. You must come to terms with yourself, with your life before you are changed into a creature that you do not wish to become."
"Yeah that helps a bunch." Serena remarked sarcastically.
"Where I come from I am a Healer of lost spirits, they cry out to me in their agony and I am compelled to help them as best I can. Your spirit is calling to me Serena. It speaks of another world and a deep longing. If you do not release this longing it will make you into a creature of the spirit world." Sheana attempted to explain
Serena snorted, "Being as I am is not going to do that".
"Trust me it will. I have been sent here to prevent you from becoming that creature...or to destroy you if you do become it."
Serena felt coldness steal inside of her, "What kind of creature?"
"It has already begun hasn't it, you have seen something different in your appearance that troubles you."
Serena could not help but think of the transformation into the darker version of Sailor Moon.
"You are becoming of the spirit world Serena, your spirit has so much power that it is pulling that place inside of you. It will warp you, turn you into something you will be hard pressed to walk away from. Once you change the spirit world will be your domain and the realm you exist in now will become your hunting ground." Sheana continued.
"My hunting ground?" She squeaked.
Sheana seemed frustrated with finding the right words and Serena could not bring herself to feel sorry for the woman. After all she wasn't the one who seemed to be turning into something evil.
"Not an evil thing Serena. Something made of the spirit world. You will walk into a room and those nearest you will feel a pull to that world. The weak will not survive an encounter with you." Sheana explained.
"How do you know this will happen?" Serena asked guardedly.
"My grandfather foresaw it in a dream state." Sheana answered.
"And I'm suppose to trust this grandfather of yours?" She asked incredulously.
"My tribe does so without thought." Sheana replied.
"I don't buy it. I'm not a weak person. I would never allow something like that to happen." Serena said forcefully.
"It is not your weakness that will be your downfall." Sheana said darkly.
"If you want to believe this then go ahead I'm not. I'm not that type of person and I'm not about to change anything for you or anyone else's comfort. Leave." Serena ordered.
"Then the next time we meet you and I will be enemies," Sheana said sadly.
"I doubt it but you can think whatever you want to." Serena stated boldly turning her back to Sheana.
She could feel the woman leave the immediate area but could not relax.
