The Darkness Inside of Her

By: dragonfly-rising

Serena found herself running from Raye's shrine as fast as she could, praying no one followed her. She did not want to understand what was twisting inside of her, calling on her to do something she was not fully aware of yet. Her blood pounded in her temples as she ran faster trying to escape the rolling emotions inside of her.

~ Why did I lie to them? Why can't I just tell them? Why does it hurt so much to protect them? Why can't everything just be like it use to be? ~

These thoughts circled in her mind warring with this other new sense that she had something to do...somewhere that she needed to be. She didn't stop running until she had reached the park, where she skid in the dirt and found herself falling into a sitting position on the ground. She looked out at the water of the pond wondering how she had come so close to losing control of herself. For a moment she had almost burst into tears as she ran. She knew her emotional restraint was strained but this was taking it even further then she had feared. She had to get control back before she faced the others again.

~ Useless...its just useless to want them to understand. I think maybe I almost hurt Raye today without even realizing it. How could I explain that to the others? How could I face them? ~

Serena clenched her teeth against a scream of frustration that was building inside of her. It was all too much for her to handle now. She had finally come to her limit of secrets. She had to tell them before she did do something to them out of ignorance. She couldn't push away that thought that perhaps next time, if a new attack jumped from her, that she might seriously hurt someone.

~I can't do this alone anymore. ~ She thought as she picked herself up off the ground.

~ are you alone ~ whispered a voice on the air.

Serena's head snapped around scanning the park for the speaker. Her heart sped up in fear.

~ do you really know what alone is ~ whispered the voice again.

"What?" Serena asked out loud.

~ how could something of such power not be alone ~

"Come out whoever you are! I don't talk to disembodied voices!" Serena demanded feeling stupid for talking aloud.

A cool wind sprang up around Serena, for a moment causing her to think of a cold hand caressing her cheek. She took an involuntary step backward. She scanned the park more studiously becoming agitated when she found no one around to attach the voice to.

~ you are of the same as I am ~ the voice stated.

Serena shivered, "What do you mean?"

She could not help herself something in the voice spoke of knowledge greater then she had. She was almost desperate to get answers to her problems. It didn't occur to her that she should have never spoken directly to the voice that surrounded her, echoing in her mind.

~ the mortal realm is not where you wish to be yet you cling to it ~

"Well that's a stupid thing to say. Of course I cling to being alive." Serena snapped.

~ pity...you should join me ~

"Answer just one question you stupid voice then I'll think about it! Wait...join you in what?" She asked.

~ that should be obvious...but that is not the question you wish answered ~ the voice chided.

Serena scowled, "What are we the same of?"

There was stillness so complete around her that Serena began wondering if she had imagined the icy voice. Someone came up behind her quietly and though she wanted to spin around to see whom it was she could not find it in herself to move. This someone put a large hand over her cheek from behind and slowly turned her. She did not fight the movement; somehow knowing it was a useless gesture to resist. She looked up into the ebony eyes of a handsome man that flashed with malevolence so deep that she found herself shivering from reaction. His generous lips stretched into an intimate smile. A stronger shudder slipped through her and she noted with growing fright that her cheek was becoming chilled where his fingers rested on it. She tried to move away from him, finding herself still unable to. A soft chuckle escaped the man and Serena wanted to scream in terror. It was not a pleasant sound; it was the sound of dark thoughts and deeds that she wanted no part of.

"Of death dear girl"

Serena felt tears pool into her open eyes, "no"

"Oh yes" He whispered to her.
