A/N Wow, I got a review. Seriously amazed at this, but very happy! Watch me
run in circles! Oh, uh, and it's kinda boring at the beginning, but that's
not really unusual. But this chapter has cap guns! And nothing is boring
when you've got cap guns!
"Wake up!" a voice was yelling. It sounded very far away, as if they were calling from across a field. Emma slowly opened her eyes and saw, well, a blur. A complete unidentifiable blur.
"My glasses." She groaned. "They broke didn't they?"
Seb's voice came back to her. "Yeah. I was lucky and mine didn't. You took me and Cam down that slope with you."
"How'd we get out of the water?" Emma sat up, her head hurting, and realized her backpack was still on.
"I don't know. One minute it was all dark and stuff, the next we were here and you were lying there like you were dead." He sounded almost reproachful.
"It's not my fault that I'm clumsy." She muttered as she pawed through her bag. With a shout of triumph she pulled out a hard glasses case. "Thank god for buy one get one free sales."
Being able to see again she could tell that they were far from the woods. They weren't even anywhere near their town as far as she could see. All around them was a cold rocky landscape, with sharp cliffs and stones jutting out into the sky.
"Where's Cam?"
"Scouting. Do you have any food in your bag?"
"Yes." She said hesitantly. "But I think we should save it.
Seb nodded but before he could say anything Cam came running back around the corner. "Hey you got her to wake up! Good job. There's some water over that way." He waved a hand vaguely behind him, "And I think I know where we are."
"Oh?" Seb asked in a curious voice.
"Think about it. What does this landscape most remind you of."
Emma and Seb sat in silent thought. At last Emma said, "Most remind me of? I'd have to say Emyn Muil from The Two Towers."
Cam nodded. "We're dreaming. That has to be it. We were gonna play a game and fell asleep or something that has to be it."
"Somehow I doubt that." Emma said, still rooting through her bag. "Hey I've got the cap guns." A speculative look came over her face. "We are in a Lord of the Rings-ish place with cap guns. I'm getting evil thoughts."
"And I'm echoing them. Hand over the cap guns and lets load up. This my be the most interesting level three we've done." Seb said with a slightly evil grin.
"That could be argued." Emma said as she passed out the cap guns. "Now lets go look for Gollum. Helping Frodo and Sam would be boring."
The three friends set off, sneaking along as quietly as they could. Unsurprisingly they had seen no sign of the hobbits or Gollum in all their walking. By the time night fell they were no longer as excited, though their still wet clothes may have had something to do with that.
"I say we sleep." Seb said. "This is a good enough spot." He pointed to a small gully nearby.
Emma and Cam agreed and they settled down for the night.
"You know we could probably make a fire with the cap guns, but it'd probably be a little loud." Emma remarked.
"Yeah, well, we can live without it." Seb replied. "Who wants first watch?" Nobody volunteered. "Gee don't all jump forward at once." He grumbled, settling himself as the others lay down to try and sleep.
Seb was starting to drift off when he heard a slight sound. Shaking himself awake with difficulty he heard voices. They seemed to be arguing about something, and after a few moments the arguing stopped and he saw a silver rope, that if he hadn't known it was coming he probably never would have seen.
He crept to Emma first, and poked her while holding one hand over her mouth. She woke looking startled, and on feeling his hand bit down without thinking.
Seb held in a yelp of pain, and she realized her mistake. She was about to speak, but he pointed to the rope. With a nod of understanding they woke Cam, who reacted slightly less viciously than Emma.
They scrambled out of the small gully, as they had agreed to find Gollum first. From their new position they could see the cliff face, and could make out shapes in the darkness. One of the shapes started to make its way down the rope, but slipped and cried out.
Emma was laughing silently as the figure moved back up the cliff. Speaking so softly only an Elf could have heard her she whispered, "Stupid clumsy hobbitses." to her friends.
They contained their laughter and watched as the two hobbits finally made their way down from the cliff.
As Seb and Cam were watching Emma was examining the cliff wall for a way to get up. Spotting something, and laughing again at the stupidness of hobbits she poked her friends and crawled off towards the wall.
As the three friends made their way up the cliff face, with plenty of handholds and footholds, they were unaware of a watcher above them.
Gollum, or Smeagol if you prefer, was watching the two hobbits he had been tracking from the top of the cliff, but his attention was drawn to a slight noise from another cliff face. He made his stealthy way towards the noise, and as he looked over the edge he saw three shapes creeping closer.
The creature retreated from the cliff, whispering to himself, "What is they precious? Be they good eating I wonders? Are they more nasty hobbitses precious?"
As he was talking to himself the first of the shapes reached the top and leaned down to help the next. When they all were up one called out in a soft voice, "Gollum?"
He made his way out of the shadows, and the three kids saw the creature for the first time. The movie Gollum was fat and well fed compared to this gaunt creature, he looked almost as if he were an undead, condemned to roam the world forever.
"What do the nasty creatures want precious? Why do they seek us out? *Gollum, gollum. *"
One of the kids smiled, "We have been looking for you. WE know what you want, and we can help you get it."
"The nasty creatures speak of the precious, *gollum*"
"Yup. We don't want it, but we want to see Frodo and Sam suffer. Don't like them. Stupid fat hobbit and his blasted Mr. Frodo." A different one this time.
"They lies. They lies." Gollum muttered.
"Oh no, we don't lie. Smeagol." The only figure that had not spoken said.
Gollum's face went pale, as they had seen in the movie, but his expression of surprise was far more dramatic. It was all they could do not to burst into laughter. "Yes. That was my name once."
"We know that. And we know you. We know how Bilbo stole the ring from you. And we want to help you get it back." The figure that had spoken his name said again. This one's voice was different, more feminine.
"How?" Gollum hated to say it, but he was drawn in by their offer.
"With these." The first figure said again, and pulled out a couple of orange, well we know they're cap guns but Gollum doesn't, but no one cares so cap guns they shall be!
"What have they gots precious?"
"These are things that make really, really loud noises. They scare stuff. And if you hit 'em right you can light stuff on fire. We got some other stuff too." He simled. "But best of all we know how the story goes. We know what'll happen if you don't listen to us. That being that you won't get the ring and will die a very painful death in a boiling pit of lava."
Gollum was very surprised at this. "What shall we do precious? Shall we accept the odd one's offer?" He turned his back on them, and when they saw his face again he was smiling, though it wasn't a happy smile. It was an evil smile. "We get to torture the nasty hobbitses endlessly yes precious?"
"Most defiantly."
"We accept their offer then, don't we precious. Shall they tell us what they have in mind?"
