Chapter One :: Showtime

Isis sighed and let her deep ocean eyes work their way through the glass to see the reflection then stared at her blankley in the mirror. It was not her. Her hair was tied back into a tight bun and the cloths she was wearing were glittering, she was wearing a long white gown and silver silk cloack, and alot of jewels, including a tiara. She continued to look aimlessly into the mirror, above it, in gold lettering it said "Isis Ishtar". That was who she was . . . but did she want to be?

There was knock at the door but she did not try to answer it, her eyes didn't even move, she didn't react, she knew who it was and that this person would let themselves in anyway.

. . . And they did, the door was opened to reveal a man who must have been in his late forties, early fifties, it was her father. "Good evening Isis" he said, kindly, as he closed the door fimrly. Once it had closed everythign about him changed, his tone, his expression, but still Isis did not look round. "Your to vain for your own good, all you do is spend endless hours in front of that mirror!" he cried, un aware that his voice was so loud.

He reached out and grabbed her by her shoulders, turning her round to face him and holding her firmly. Isis tried to close her eyes but it was as if something was holding them tight open. "You better do well tonight," her father spat in her face, hsi grip on her tightened, "I'm getting alot of money from this, if you don't do well you know what'll happen!" then one of his hands came free and he slapped her across the cheek.

Isis didn't react, at least not physically. She often wondered why her father did things like this, there was no reason.

Then he let go. "Well, i think you had better be going" he said, as if nothing had happened. Isis watched him faintly as he walked over to the door and opened it. "Come along Isis" he said in a sweet tone, and she had no choice, she followed him silently.

Kiaba rolled his eyes as he stepped into the theatre, all around him were people in smart dress, and others, mostly kids, who had been brought here by their parents, sitting on the window ledges, drinking soda. "Mokuba?" Seto asked, turning round, "Where are you? hurry up!"

Mokuba walked up to Seto, he had been trying to buy a dirnk, but Seto caught him in time so he couldn't. "If you wanted a drink why didn't you just ask?" Seto asked and Mokuba shrugged. Seto rolled his eyes once more and took Mokuba's hand, together they walked over to the counter and Seto ordered his little brother a soda.

About ten minutes later they were sat at a cloth covered table, that was placed by a winodw of the theatre lobby. No-one had said anything until; "Seto . . . why are we even here?" Mokuba asked, sipping his soda, he was trying to make it last for as long as possible.

"I thought you wanted to come" Seto cried, sounding annoyed.

"Why would i want to come watch opera?" Mokuba asked, as if pointing out the obvious.

"It's not opera Mokuba, it's a musical"

"Oh . . . well, i'd rather be at home playing video games"

Seto ignored him, he was not a big fan of theatre either, the only reason he had came was that somone had given him the crazy idea that it was good and they should go. He learned his elbow on the table and sighed.

"Mr Kaiba?" a voice said, it was a high pitched voice and as Kaiba looked up he saw a women with brunette hair looking down on him, she was wearing a uniform that resembled that of a waitress. Kaiba shrugged as if to say 'what?'. "The play will be starting soon, shall i show you to your seats?"

*-*-*

Her father had left her as soon as they had reached the door labelled "back stage" so Isis just stood there, as if she didn't know how to open the door. She knew the play would be starting soon, her father had forced her to be in it, it wasn't her choice. The manager of the theatre had wanted her so badly he was willing to pay, but Isis didn't know why, he said she could sing, but that was only because it was the only was to release her feelings.

Suddenly the door opened and somone nearly ran into Isis, then gasped and stopped. The women before her had longish blonde hair and lavender eyes. "Isis!" Mai cried, "There you are!" Mai was Isis' best friend but she had no idea that Isis' father was being so mean to her. "Wow, i like the dress" Mai smiled.

"Hey Mai and thanks," Isis sighed, she felt safe around Mai, as if she could talk and be herself.

Mai had chosen to be in the play, she was wearing a sort of fairy costume, Isis grinned at it. "Not you too, this is so embarrasing!" she cried, putting a hand to her forehead.

"No, Mai, it's nice, i like it!" Isis said, realising her mistake. Mai grinned back at her.

"I know your lying but hey, it's ok" she moved out the way and Isis walked in the doorway to back stage and Mai closed it. Around them were all sorts of props and scenery that were waiting to be used in the play. Isis looked at them as if they were her chains, keeping her there. "I was sent to find you" Mai said again, "You were being late . . ."

"Sorry" Isis said quietly, "I err . . . lost my tiara" she said, quick- thinking. She couldn't tell anyone about her father or he would kill her, he was harsh, not like a father at all, sometimes Isis wondered . . .

"It's about to start" Mai said, as some men and women in black walked nearby them and picked up a big carboard cut out of a castle. "People are arriving."

Isis nodded, not really interested.

"Did you know Kaiba is here?" Mai asked, looking behind her for something to sit or lean on.

"Kaiba?" Isis asked, staring at her as she leant on a shelf of plastic weapons. "That sounds fammilliar . . ."

"Kaiba," Mai said again, "He owns Kaiba Corp. don't you know?"

"Umm . . . yeah, sorry, i forgot . . ." but she had never really heard of a "Kaiba".

A man walked over to them, he held a clipboard in his arms and was so fat he had to woddle to be able to move. "Evening Ladies" he said, with a snort, then turned to Isis, "I see you've dechided to turn up at last" he said. Isis just started. "Well, quickely to your places! it's about to start!"

Mai leaned up and pointed a finger at him, "Ok, ok, keep your wig on baldy" she said, walking off, The man turned to Isis with a look of shock on his face but Isis was already following Mai.

Kaiba and Mokuba sat down, from their seats on one of the top balcany's they could see everything and they had a perfect view of the stage. Mokuba continued to sip his soda and Kaiba hissed at him. "What?" he asked, glaring up at his big brother.

"Don't slurp that like that, everyone's staring at us . . ." Seto whispered.

Mokuba sighed, "but you said i could get a drink!"

Seto was about to raise his voice then he thought there's no point, it was almost impossible to argue with Mokuba so he didn't try. He leaned foreword and resting his head on his hand, his elbow on the bar and waited for it to start. 'this is gonna' be a loooonnnng night' he thought.

Suddenly all the lights switched off, except for one, which was a single spot light shining on the stage. Kaiba looked up slightly, from below he heard people shouting, "SHH!" and "it's starting!"

The curtain became to raise, slowely, Kaiba eyebrows raised as he watched the young women on the stage. Isis stood there, the light hitting her face like a beam. All theese wierd people staring at her. Kaiba lifted his head up, mayber this wouldn't be so boring afterall.

And then, with a warning stare from her father, who was sat in the front row, Isis opened her mouth to sing the first note of the play.

*-*-*

The play ended to maginificent aplose and cheering. Even Kaiba stood up and cheerd, watching the curtain slowely shading Isis from his view, Mokuba however had fallen asleep and his soda had fallen onto the floor, Kaiba hadn't noticed this, he had enjoyed the play and Isis so much.

*-*-*

"Way to go Isis!" Mai cried, running up to her friend and hugging her. Isis was shocked by hugged Mai back.

"Thanks Mai, you were awsome too" Mai looked at her, red paint dripping from her face this was because Mai had "died" in the play. She grinned at her friend and nodded as if to say thank you.

"You must be very proud of youself," The manager said, he was standing behind them. "Well done Isis, now maybe you too would like to go get cleaned up in time for Isis to sign some autographs?"

Isis thought, autographs? was she really that good? she looked at Mai, who seemed happy for her, but Isis could see she was slightly jealous, if only she knew Isis' real life, then what would she have to be jealous of?

Isis pushed open the door to her dressing room, she felt slightly better. She didn't want this attention, she just wanted to be normal, and to be loved. Everyone loved her, but that's not what she meant, she wanted to BE loved.

"Well done Isis." she heard somone say, in front of her, on her chair, sat her father, a massive grin across his face.
