Chapter Five :: Warning

*-*-*

Mai made her way into the hourse and closed the door behind her, she was annoyed at Joey and nervous about the blood. Only a couple of hours ago her life seemed fine, now she was worried something was going to happen.

She took off her jacket and flung it over the peg, hanging on the wall. Then she put her bag down on the table. Then she looked around, it was silent, only the wind from outside could be heard. It was dark and late and Mai wasn't one to get scared easily but something was freaking her out.

She made her way up the stairs, each one creaking as she stepped on it and when she got to the top she flicked on the light switch for the hall. Then she went into her room, closing thje door behind her and turning the lgiht on.

She looked in her mirror and took the plait in her hair out, tellign herself Joey wasn't worth it. Then she had an idea, she could ring Isis, she didn't ring her often but sometimes a girl needs her best friend.

Mai jumped onto her bed and leant back, grabbing her phone from her bedside table and dailing Isis' number. Then she put it to her ear and waited. The voice that answered on the other end was not Isis'. "Hello?" it groaned, it was her father, sounding annoyed.

"Err . . . Hello Mr. Ishtar," Mai said, "Is Isis there, can i talk to her please?"

The man groaned, "You know full well Isis isn't here, because she's at your house."

Mai listened wondering what he was on about, and then was silent for a minute. Isis wasn't at her place . . . "I'm sorry Mr. Ishtar, she's not here-"

"I know she is," he growled, "Where else would she go? Don't try to hide the fact that she's there. Now either she comes home now or i'll come and get her myself!"

Mai thought to hang up, he was acting wierd, she just listened, Isis must have said she was goign to Mai's and then gone off with someone else, and Mai had just sold her out. "Listen, i don't know what you mean, Isis isn't here-"

"I bet she told you to say that," he sighed, "Well never mind, i'm fed-up with that little brat, I'm coming round right now!" and then she heard the click, he had hung up. Mai held the phone to her ear for a couple of minutes, and then put it back.

She wondered even more what was going on now, why did he think Isis was here? and he couldn't just come barging into her home? could he? What the hell is going on?

*-*-*

Isis sat up, she had been asleep for the night in stead of goign down to meet Kaiba. It was all to wierd to take in before she had had a sleep. She felt the sun pour through the window and over her as her eyes adjusted to the light. She looked down at her arm, which had stopped bleeding and her nose had stopped hurting. That ngiht she had slept fine, not once waking up like she usually did at home. She felt safe.

Before she could even get out of bed there was a kncok on the door, it seemed to go straight through her head, which punded. She still had a strong headache. She did not say come in but the door opened anyway to reveal a young women, wearing black. Her hair was a dark blonde and rested on her shoulders with a slight curl.

Isis looked at her, as if asking what she wanted and she looked down. "Miss Ishtar, Mr Kaiba sent me to ask if there's is anything you need . . .?"

"No Thank-you," Isis said, pullign the blankets around her, "I'm fine."

"OK," She said and looked back up, "Breakfast is in the main hall when your ready, just so you don't get lost."

Isis nodded and the girl smiled and left the room. Isis was a bit puzzled, she wasn't used to being waited on, her father forced her to do all the work all the time, some life of a star . . .

Isis swung the blankets off and got out of bed. She didn't bother to open the curtains because it was already very lgiht in the room. She made her way over to the cupboard, Kaiba had said there were cloths in there. Opening the doors she saw more cloths then she would have thought could fit in there, more cloths then she'd have been given. She took out a black skirt and white top, they would do, she wasn't very pciky.

Kaiba sat at the table, he had a glass of water standing in front of him, he didn't feel like eating much. He was worried about Isis, what could he do? Her father was a mad-man, and he couldn't keep her there. He hadn't told Mokuba what had happened to her, he'd tried to say that she fell down some steps or something but Mokiiba wasn't buying it.

He looked up as he heard the door open, to see Isis, walking in, looking stunned, She turned her gaze to Kaiba, "I am in the right place, arn't I?" she asked, he nodded, trying not to seem as concerned as he really was.

"Can i get you anything?" He asked.

Isis shook her head, she didn't feel hungery, she hardly ever did. Kaiba didn't ask again, he felt stuff liek that was pointless. "So," He said, "Is there anything you had planned for today?" he asked, not knowing why, what could she have planned?

"If it's not too much trouble," She started off, "I wanted to visit my friend, Mai."

Kaiba shrugged, "It's no trouble, i get get a car to take you there. Would you like me to come?"

Isis looked at him, "Yes," She said, for once not asking if he wouldn't mind. She like it with him, it was safe, she felt like she should be with him all the time, it was a feeling she couldn't describe except for love . . . and she didn't know this, but he felt the same.

Kaiba was about to say something when the door opened and Mokuba walked in, nearly kncoking Isis over. He stopped and looked up at her, "Hi Isis," he muttered, "You awake, how are you?"

"Fine, Thanks," she said, looking down on the boy, he was like his brother, but he seemed warmer.

"Right, Mokuba, go and get you breakfast, Isis and I have somewhere to go," Kaiba said, getting to his feet. Mokuba nodded, not knowing where they were going, he went to sit at the table. Kaiba came to stand by Isis. "Come on, a car will be waiting for us outside."

Isis follwed him out, wondering how he can get a car ready so fast.

*-*-*

The car pulled up outside Mai's house, it skidded to one side of the road and the engine stopped. Kaiba jumped out, followed by Isis, she wasn't wearing a jacket, it was quite a hot day. Kaiba turned to her once he had shut the door.

"Is this the place?" he asked, "This was were i found you,"

Isis nodded, and thnaked him yet again for helping her, but she had told him in the car she would be OK staying with Mai, even though she doubted it, that was where her father expected her to be. Isis walked up to the door and kncoked, noticing her own blood dry on the door, Kaiba noticed it too but did not comment on it.

After a while, when there was no answer, Isis opened the door, it flung open easily. She looked around, Mai was in because all of her stuff was there, but she would have come to the door . . .

"Is she here?" Kaiba asked, follwing Isis in quietly.

"She should be," Isis said, but she was begginging to doubt it. Together, they made their way into Mai's living room where the TV was on quitely but no-one was in there. Isis looked round, this wasn't like Mai.

Then Isis heard something coming from the kitchen, Kaiba must have heard it too because he turned round, it was someone coughing. Isis made her way into the kitchen and gasped, what she saw was not right, it was just going to far.

Mai, sat with her head leaning on the cabinet, was bleeding, her nose bleeding and her arms, someone had done to her what she had done to Isis, probably her father. Isis looked at her friend, whoes eyes were closed and she knelt down beside her, taking ehr hand.

Kaiba looked at them both, he knew he should have rang the police, this was getting out of hand.

"Mai?" Isis asked. "Mai, please be OK, can you hear me?" Isis was so afriad now, if her father could do this to one of her friends, what else could he do?

Mai turned round, her eyes opened and she looked up at Isis. She coughed slightly and pulled her hand away, pullign herself up a little. "I'll be fine," she whispered.

"What happened?" Kaiba asked, before Isis had the chance.

Mai looked up at him, she didn't realise he was there. Then she looked at Isis, "Your dad," she said, expecting Isis to be shocked. But Isis wasn't, she gritted her teeth, how could he do something like this? "He said he asked nicely for you to come home, but you didn't, he thought you were with me. He said this was a warning . . ." she continued, spitting her words out between coughs.
