Chapter Six :: Mine

*-*-*

Mai sat on the bed, her head leaning on the railings od the bed-head. She had found that when she had tried to get up it hurt too much, she had sustained injury and her arm was broken. The doctors had stopped the bleeding and bandaged her up but she wasn't aloud to leave the hospital for a while.

The white sheets around her blinded her eyes, as did the hospital lights. Why was it always so bright? She thought, drawing herself away from the signle thing she had been thinking about all night. Why would Mr. Ishtar do this? She didn't understand, but it seemed, Isis did.

*-*-*

Isis turned away from the window. She had been watching Mai through it for quite a while but Mai did nto notice her. She had been crying and her eyes were slightly sore. She had been at the hospital for about two hours, with Kaiba, who seemed just as shocked as Mai. Isis was shocked, the only person her father had ever attacked was her. Why attack Mai? To get to Isis? It made sense but Isis had nto believed her father was capable of this, and now she knew he was and her hate for him had grown, it was taking over her, it was hard to remain calm, but she must, her plan was to confront her father . . . But she knew it wouldn't work.

She saw Kaiba come round a corner, holding too plastic cups which were steaming from the top. "I brought you coffee," He said, holding one out to her, "So your still watching her?"

Isis took the cup, not suprised when the heat surrounded her hand, she didn't want to drink, to do anything. "Yes," she said simply.

"I know this is hard," Kaiba sighed, "But we must call the police, ro do something, if you father did this he coudl do something else." It was hard for Kaiba to say, he wasn't one to go and "tell" on people, but he saw how afriad Isis was, this man needed stopping but he didn't know anything about him to be able to stop him. The police were not Kaiba's style, but he didn't want to go beating up Isis' father, how would she react?

Isis looked up at him, "It's all really hard," she said, "I just hate him for this, why would he do this?"

Kaiba nodded and put his arm on her shoulder, "Come sit down, don't worry," He said and led her away from the window and sat her down on one of the blue hopsital chairs, sitting then next to her, "We need to show Mai it's gonna' be OK. We can deal with him later, for now you need to think about Mai OK?"

Isis glared at Kaiba, nto understanding why he was being so kind, he hadn't seemed so when she had first met him, she had "looked" into him and seen coldness, but love, love that this situation had seemed to have let out. She tried to clear her mind, and nodded to him, sipping her coffee and feeling it warm her throat up.

Just then a doctor walked past and Kaiba stood up and grabbed his arm, "Doctor," he growled, sounding annoyed, "When will Mai Valentine be able to leave?"

The doctor turned fully to face him as Isis looked up, "I'm afriad we need to ask her some questions first," the doctor said, holding his folder under his arm and glaring at Isis, "About what happened to her . . .?"

"About the at-" Kaiba said.

"Accsident?" She said, standing up. Kaiba looked at her, he knew she couldn't do it, she couldn't rbing herself to turn her father in. That was what Mai and Isis had talked about on the way there, their story was that Mai had fallen down the stairs.

"The accsident." The doctor said, lowering his gaze a hint of suspision in his voice. "Well i must be going, Mai has a visitor right now, after that we will be questioning her." And with that he walked off, without a word of goodbye. Isis held her coffee, it was stillw arming her up inside.

"Wonder who the visitor is," Kiba said, sitting back down. His question was answered when a blonde-haired boy walked aroudn the corner, he was tall and wearing casual jeans and a white T-shirt. He held some flowers in his right hand and they dangeled beside him as he walked.

"Joey!" Isis cried, walking over to him. Kaiba looked at her, and then at the boy. He looked at Isis, they had only met a few times, Mai had introduced them.

"What happened to Mai?" Joey asked, looking at Isis sadly.

"She . . ." Isis didn't know what to tell him, the truth? Could eh be trusted? "She fell down the stairs," Isis said, realising for the first time how stupid it sounded. Joey nodded, thinking how Mai coudl have done that but Isis knew if Mai wanted to tell him the truth she would . . .

`Joey sighed. "Well," he said, "I'll just go see her then . . ." he said, trying to avoid Isis' stare as he headed for the door of the room.

Kaiba watched Isis as she came to sit back down, her head was spinnign and so she didn't say anything, it was too shocking and she couldn't say how she felt in words.

Mai heard the door open and sat up straight, looking at Joey as he walked in. She looked down, not wanting him to see her like this. As he walked towards her, she did nto speak, just looked at her bed-sheets and hoped if she stayed quiet he'd just leave. But he didn't, he looked at the chair next to the bed and sat down in it. "Hey Mai," he whispered.

Mai looked up at him, even in her state she was stilla nnoyed, "Why is it your not late when i'm in hospital yet you are when we're on dates?" She asked, not meaning too, btu ti came out.

Joey looked at her, always the same old Mai, not matter what. He handed her the flowers, dechiding to ignore what she had said. She took them and looked ta them, this was the second time he had got her flowers. She smiled, knowing that he did care . . . "Thnaks Joey," she said udner her breath.

"So how are you?" He asked, leaning back in the chair.

Mai shrugged, "I was attacked, how do you think?" She said, before she could stop herself. Joey sat up, glaring at her.

"But . . . Isis said you fell down the stairs . . ." he said, sounding worried.

'shit . . .' Mai was thinking as she hasidly thought of something to say, "Well," she said, "I meant . . . " She had no way out, she was trapped with this one. She looked at Joey, her eyes watery, but she refussed to cry in front of him so she just shrugged.

Joey wondered what she meant. "What happened Mai?" he asked, worry piercing his voice.

"It doesn't matter Joey," She sighed, moving down the bed until she was almost lieing down. She held the flowers in front of her, as if trying to shield her face.

"But Mai, i thought you trusted me, it matters . . ." Joey said, deturmined to find out.

"It was just some guy," She said, with a fake laugh, hiding the truth, "Just, some wierd taxi driver."

"Are the police involved?" Joey asked.

Mai shook her head, she was glad they weren't. "But i don't want to talk about it Joey, everything's gonna' be OK, i just wanna' forget it." She said, moving the flowers to look into his eyes. Joey tried to smile, but he couldn't so he moved his hand over to hers and held it firmly.

"Whatever you want Mai," he whispered, "I'll always be here for you."

"Feeling any better?" Kaiba asked Isis, who was still sat with a cup of coffee gripped in her hand, it had now gone cold, but she had not noticed. "Isis . . .?" Kaiba asked, when she did nto answer.

Isis moved her head round to look at him and bit her bottom lip, what did he expect, that he would be OK? She just took a deep sigh and then without warning dropped her cup out of her hand, it slammed down on the floor and the coffee spilled over the floor. "Uh . . ." Isis cried, shocked, moving her feet out of the way.

Kaiba shook his head, he saw some people walking over to clean it up and he took Isis hand. She followed him round the corner, feeling sick. "What's the matter?" he asked, as if he didn't already know.

Isis looked at him, the feeling was gone. The feeling that he could save her from anything, that feeling she got with him, that love he was hiding . . . it was gone. "I need to go outside," She said, pullign herself away from hima nd taking a couple of steps away.

"Shall i come with you?" Kaiba called after her.

"No," she said quietly, not turning around, just walking on, "I just need some fresh-air, that's all, i'll be back in a couple of minutes." and with that she walked off, into the nearest lift, heading for the exit. Kaiba watched her leave, there was something wrong, something much more wrong then just Mai, but he didn't know what, he felt like eh had let her down in some way. But how?

*-*-*

Isis walked out into the night, her raven hair blowing against her face in the wind. She wrapped her brown overcoat around herself as she walked out into the car park. No-one was there, the night was silent, only she stood at the entrance, trying to essemble her mind and sort out the thoughts she had mixed up her head.

"Isis . . ." she heard someone say, a fammilliar voice that shocked her. She turned round swiftly, grabbign her coat as if it would protect her, but she did not see anyone. She looked back at the empty car-park and suddenly felt a shiver run down her spine, something much colder then the night air. Someone had laid their hand on her shoulder.

She did not look around just tried to stop the tears swelling up in her eyes. She looked down, she couldn't believe this had happened.

"I think we had better go home, don't you Isis?" He father's voice hissed in her ear, "You are mine and it's time for you to come back were you belong . . ."
