Ch. 4
For the next few hours, Sarah and Draco stayed like that. The train rolled on, while outside it grew steadily darker. It was pitch black outside before Sarah awoke.
"Wow," she yawned. "How long was I asleep?"
"Just a few hours," replied Draco. He looked down at Sarah and smiled. "We're almost there you know."
"I know," she said breathlessly. "I can't wait to see it!"
Draco looked out the window for a moment, then back at Sarah. "You think we can do this?" he asked without looking at her.
"What?" she asked, slightly puzzled.
"This," said Draco. "Us."
Sarah thought she knew what Draco was talking about. "Draco, if you're talking about HarryI can talk to him, and besides, he doesn't matter anyway."
Draco turned away from her and got a far-away look in his eyes. He sat like this for a long time, making Sarah a little nervous.
"What is it?" she asked. "What's wrong?"
It took Draco a few moments to answer. Without looking at Sarah, he began.
"Ever since I was little, has always made sure I knew the difference between 'purebloods' and 'mudbl-' 'muggleborns.' I remember once walking with him through Diagon Alley on our way to Knockturn Alley. I must have been about 10 years old. I saw a girl standing outside a store and I remember thinking she was very pretty. I stopped for just a second to look at her, and my father noticed. He grabbed me by the collar and dragged me home. I sat in his study for an hour as he lectured me on how I had to stay away from 'mudblood' girls. I remember him saying, "Girls like that mudblood will destroy you Draco. (A/N: I wrote this under my opinion that Lucius Malfoy can, in his mind, tell muggleborns from purebloods) If I ever find you with a mud blood girl, I will personally see to it that both you and her are put in your place." If my father found out about us, I don't want to think about what he would do. Not to me, but to you. If he ever came near you, Sarah, I swear I'd kill him."
Draco turned back to Sarah, and she was shocked to see a single tear roll down his cheek. Without saying a word, Sarah took Draco in her arms and held him. Draco's sobs eventually ceased, and the car grew quiet.
"You don't have to worry, Draco," said Sarah finally. "I have faith that you can protect me."
Draco looked up at Sarah, and they both smiled. After a few minutes of silence, the train came to a stop. Sarah and Draco stood up together. With one last look at each other, they stepped, hand-in-hand, out of their compartment and off the train.
