I opened the garage door to my house, and immediately walked to the couch and laid down. My now girlfriend, who is the love of my life, was raped, and now pregnant. Just thinking about it made my head spin.
I flipped on the TV, and then my very nervous looking dad, rushed down the stairs.
"Oh, Ethan...you're home," he stammered. I noticed that he was carrying a stack of papers in his arms.
"I come home at this time everyday. What are those?" I said, pointing to the papers.
"Work stuff. I forgot it this morning, so I had to come back."
"Oh."
"I have to rush back now, and I don't think that I will be home until ten tonight, so you are own your own for dinner."
Well, what's new?
"Okay dad, bye."
As he rushed out the door, I noticed that he dropped one of his papers from his stack. I waited until his car left the driveway, and then I picked it up.
The top of the paper said that it was an autopsy report. I scrolled down lower and read that it was my mother's.
I threw it back down on the floor, not wanting to remember my mom's weird death. But after I did that, I wondered why my dad was carrying it, so I picked it back up.
I skimmed through most of it, until I noticed something bizarre. It listed my mother's cause of death as suicide.
"Hello, Ethan."
I whirled around to find Tawny standing right behind me.
"What are you doing here?"
She snatched the paper right from my hands.
"I was just coming home to get my coat, and your dad said that he dropped a piece of paper. I assume that this is it."
"Yeah, it is. Tawny?"
"Yes?" she replied, as she pulled her coat out of the closet.
"What was my dad doing with my mom's autopsy report?"
Tawny suddenly went very pale.
"Ethan, they are reopening your mother's case. They have found new evidence in her death."
"My mom did not kill herself."
"She was a very unhappy person, Ethan. You were just too young to realize it."
With that, she left, slamming the door shut. It felt like she had punched me in the stomach with her last statement. My eyes welled up, and I felt like I was going to cry.
But I could not.
I was going to get to the bottom of this.
I immediately went upstairs, to my dad's office, and flipped on his computer. On the desktop screen there an icon that said LETTER.
I clicked on it, holding my breath as I waited to find out the contents.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Tawny, She found out. I don't know how I will tell you, because she now knows, and she has threatened to hire a lawyer to expose my dealings with my business in the past. I do not know what I will do, but I do know that I cannot stop seeing you ever. We need to get rid of her, and maybe cover it as suicide....
I stopped reading the letter, because I had had enough.
So this was why my dad was not fazed at all when my mom.
He thought he had committed the perfect crime, and he did. But now it was all unraveling in front of him.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
RING RING
I awoke from my deep sleep to the ring of my phone. I answered it groggily.
"Hello?"
"Hey Kate, it's me Ethan," he replied.
"What's up?"
"Ummm...can you come over, right now? I need someone to talk to."
"I will be over there right away. What's the matter?"
"It's about my mom."
When Ethan said mom, something in his voice told me that something was very wrong.
Right after I heard him say goodbye, and the click of him hanging up the phone, I was already in my car.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
"What's the matter, Ethan?" I asked as he opened his front door.
"My dad murdered my mom. And they reopened the case."
I wrapped my arms around him. His eyes were swollen, and bloodshot, like he had been crying.
"How did you find out?"
"I found this on my dad's computer."
He held up a letter that had been printen off. I only skimmed the contents of it, but I knew what it said.
"Oh my god."
"That's what I thought. I have not been able to do anything since I found out that my dad is a murderer."
"What are you going to do?" I asked.
"I don't know. I will testify against him in trial, though. He deserves to be in prison."
"Is he coming back tonight?"
"Not until late. Is your mom home?"
"She went back to Bermuda, since I ruined her last vacation."
"Do you want to go somewhere to eat?"
"I guess. I am still in a shock though, over what is all happening."
Ethan kissed me on the cheek.
"As long as we have each other."
