~Chapter 5: Blue~

Gerry Bertier! What do you say about Gerry Bertier?

I guess I should start with my best memory of him. I've got quite a few. But I guess I'll have to go with the time that me and Big Julius and a few other guys taught Bertier about "yo' momma" jokes.

That was right after "Sunshine" showed up. He'd just had his hair cut, and I decided that if Bertier was going to be friends with us, we were gonna hafta break him in. So I bumped my friend Derrick in the arm. I said that I liked Sunshine better with the long hair, because he "reminded me of Bertier's momma."

That got Bertier riled. I had just broken life's most important rule. Don't mess with a Southern boy's momma. He started toward me, but Big Ju caught him before he got too far. I smiled. And decided to push my luck a little further by saying that me and Bertier's momma had been out on the town the night before. That made him really mad. I was asking to have my butt kicked. But that was when Big Ju saved me.

He asked me why I was talking about Bertier's momma like that. He said it was making him angry, and he wasn't sure he was going to be able to take my momma to the prom.

And Bertier got it. He finally got it! He smiled. So did Jerry Buck. So I told Jerry Buck that his momma needed to shave her legs, then lend the razor to Julius's momma so she could shave her back hair.

Then Lew Lastik came in (and Lastik is a BIG guy). He was holding his back and walking bent over like an old man. Petey Jones asked him what was wrong. Lewie said, "I just gave yo' momma a piggyback ride, and she weighs twice as much as I do!"

Petey didn't think that was too funny but Gerry did. He broke lose with that ol' laugh of his and declared, "That's a momma joke!"

It's been ten years since then, but I still remember it. Every game after that, we threw around a few "yo' momma" jokes.

Then there was the time somebody threw a brick through Coach Boone's window. Me and Lewie called a team meeting. Nobody really wanted to stick around. They said they weren't gonna stick around at a meeting that the coaches didn't call. But Bertier and Big Ju wouldn't let them leave. They told 'em to listen. So we tried to tell them that we needed to work harder together. Not to let other people tear us apart. Then Bertier and Big Ju got us fired up for our next game.

That's another thing Bertier was good at. He and Big Ju could always get us fired up. They'd yell and holler and get loud. And generally, that helped us to get loud and excited, too.

Yep. That's what I remember about Bertier. I won't write about the end, because Gerry would have wanted me to end this on a happy note. So I'll just say, he motivated us, he was a heck of a football player, he was good at shotput, and he was a good guy. And even though Sunshine said it already, it should be said again. Julius, Sheryl Jean, and Ronnie, y'all had a Daddy to be proud of.
