The rain came down over the dead town, glistening droplets that brought light to the desolate expanse of rubble and cobwebs. In the distance the dull roar of monsters amongst the shadows could be heard, bringing for a moment a voice that seemed to speak for the silent rage of the empty doorways and crumbling walls. Few would dare walk in the shadow of this place, long ago this town had been like so many others around the world, and when their caravan had not returned it had become a warning to those who did not truly understand what the caravans were fighting for. In the shadows something stirred, a man creeping over the rubble, sword in hand as he rounded the ruined house and held itself against the wall. Looking round the figure examined the square for a moment, and seeing it vacant he made his way out of the shadows and dashed across the square.

Settling down on the other side he stopped for a moment and remained perfectly still, his ears trying to make out the slightest sound that might indicate the presence on a monster. Luck it seemed was on his side and the trickle of rain hitting the cold slabs was all that could be heard. With a sigh of relief he let his head drop, the long days without rest were beginning to take their toll on the man, as he peered into a murky puddle he could see the rings around his eyes and the messy crop of black hair that crowned his head. His intense green eyes couldn't quite focus on the clothes he was wearing and through a haze of fatigue he could scarcely feel his worn denim trousers and canvas shirt. What he could feel was the most important thing of all. Reaching under his shirt he pulled out a short length of silver chain made into a makeshift pendant, at the end was held a small shard of glowing crystal, a chipping that kept him alive in the miasma infested wilderness beyond the safety of the villages and towns.

Tucking the crystal back into his shirt he readied his sword again, every hour it grew heavier in his hands, yet he had to go on. In the ruins of Tida there was no safe place to rest, every moment spent here invited an early end to a promising career. He wouldn't even have strayed here alone unless his cause was truly important. The crumpled letter in his top pocket was important enough to him to make him risk it, only two people knew of its contents, himself and the writer, and he feared only one of them was left alive.

In the chilling rain and the shadows of the broken ruins there was no comfort to be sought, hope that his friend was still alive was but a fleeting dream that swept across a weary mind. Everywhere the shadows shifted as what little light there was slowly drained from the world and all that remained was darkness and dust.
