It's funny how small things make up the person you love. Arwen looked down at Aragorn and smiled. It was years after the quest and life seemed perfect. Yes, their life was slowly slipping away, but they enjoyed the time they had together.
She touched her sleeping husband's cheek and placed her head back on her pillow. Running a long, slender finger down his neck, she stopped when she reached the Evenstar pendent, her smile fading. She loved the man with all her heart, but part of her longed to sail west. Aragorn had always assured her that if she felt she needed to leave, she could. He did not want her to die with him. He was always like that, thinking of others rather than himself. Such a small thing, Arwen loved him for it.
She continued her path with her finger and reached his navel. Aragorn shifted in his sleep, catching her hand gently, like holding a fragile butterfly, and bringing it to his lips. Arwen's smile widened. He was always so gentle and loving with her. He would rather die than hurt her. She placed a kiss on his forehead and leaned back as she watched the steel blue eyes she cherished, open. 'Hello my love.' Aragorn whispered and pulled her into a gentle kiss, brushing his firm lips against hers in a small show of affection. Tears met Arwen's cheeks and she pulled back.
'What troubles you?' she asked, wiping the tear from his eye.
'No matter what I tell myself, it grieves me to know you shall die whilst you stay here with me.' Arwen smiled sadly and tucked her head underneath Aragorn's chin.
'I chose a mortal life. Should I sail away I would regret it for the rest of my days. I wish to stay here my love. Do not let your heart be troubled. I love you, and always will.' Aragorn kissed her cheek and rested his eyes again.
'Yes, perhaps you are right my dear. I love you, and nothing will take you away from me. Nothing, I promise you that.' Arwen smiled at his protectiveness and love. Yes, it's funny how small things make up the person you love.
