Virgil's Lament

Summary: Virgil is distraught as he watches his friend suffer on the brink of death and blames himself.

Virgil walked into the hospital slowly, in a sort of denial, as if by giving into the reality of everything that he was somehow giving up on his friend; losing hope. He walked steadily through the blue corridor until he reached the room that read "Intensive Care" on the sign on the wall above. How he was here now was all a blur, but what troubled him more still was that he was responsible for this. He had never expected... It didn't matter how it happened just that his friend was hurt. He thought back with contempt on the whole messed up situation. Why had he told Ritchie to... It was his fault. His fault that his best friend was about to die and there was nothing he could do about it. Damn it! Why had he been so... selfish? He could remember it clear as day because that's not some crap you just forget. He opened the door and saw his partner lying on a hospital bed with a sheet pulled over him and an oxygen mask over his mouth and nostrils. He glanced over at the IV on his side and listened intently at the slow steady beeping emanating from it.

"Beep, beep, beep, beep, beep."

It was a dull, painful sound. He made this sound. He sent his friend here. He had betrayed him by sending him to deal with those meta-humans. He knew that he should have taken the time. He was just too busy to handle it himself.
