Spirit (By Redmage2k)
An apparition floated through the front door of Misato's apartment. The spirit took a moment to survey the room. It was dirty, it looked as if it hadn't been cleaned in weeks. Gliding across the debris-scattered floor, the lonely ghost made its way to a door on the far wall. It hung somewhat askew, having been knocked of its rollers. It seemed that no one had bothered to fix it. The barest hint of a smile flashed across the spirit's face when it saw the sign on the door.
*Shin-Chan's lovely suite*
The ghost passed effortlessly through the door. The room that had once been kept meticulously spotless had fallen into disarray. Shinji's possessions had been scattered everywhere by the shockwaves from the cataclysmic battle that been fought a few kilometers away mere days before. A lone figure was curled up on the futon. The room's sole living occupant sat up and stared straight at the translucent apparition that had just come through the door. The spirit stared back. The macabre tableau lasted several minutes.
At last the silence was broken.
"Ayanami."
"Ikari."
"What are you doing here, Ayanami?" Shinji asked.
"I wanted to see you, one last time." She replied, her voice was barely more then a whisper.
"Why did all of this have to happen?"
"Some things are simply meant to be." Rei said. "Who can say why fate collects some sooner then others?"
"But it's not fair!" Shinji protested. "There was so much that I was going to tell you, so much I wanted to show you about the world! All I wanted was to be with you!"
"You need to move on, Ikari. There is nothing else you can do."
"How can you say that? Don't you feel the slightest bit of regret over what happened? How can you be so cold?"
"Because I have to be, Ikari." Rei's voice seemed tainted by the slightest hint of sadness. "All my life, I have been trapped in an emotional prison, never being able to say or do the things I wanted. Shutting myself off from the world was the only way I could survive."
"Now, the war is over. Your fa... The Commander can no longer control me. For the first time I feel as if I am at peace, with the world and with myself. Though I do regret that I couldn't tell you how I feel Until now... When it's too late."
Tears were streaming down Shinji's face as he replied. "I knew, Ayanami. I always knew. But I just can't let go of you, let go of the time that was stolen from us."
"You need to move on, Ikari. You cannot stay, dwelling on what might have been. You should go and be with Soryu."
"Asuka. It just isn't the same anymore, not after everything that has happened."
Shinji tried to put his hand on her shoulder, but it passed right through her. The futile action seemed to put things back into perspective for him.
"Ayanami, I just wish that things had worked out differently, that we could have both made it. I guess I just wish..." He left it hang.
"I know, but you have to move on now, as must I. For I cannot remain here." Rei stated. "But I will never forget you."
"Goodbye, Ayanami. I... I'm going to miss you."
'No, you will not.' She thought.
"Goodbye, Ikari."
Rei watched as Shinji's ghost shimmered like a mirage and slowly faded into nothingness. 'He will be happy now.' She thought. 'The world will never hurt him again.'
She left the abandoned apartment and made her way to the train station that had somehow escaped the destruction caused by NERV's final showdown with SEELE.
'Goodbye, Shinji-Kun.'
She boarded the train bound for NewOsaka by herself, but not quite alone.
