PROLOGUE

Anck-sa-namun gave birth secretly to Imhotep's child; the child Seti thought was his. The baby didn't scream and wail like babies are accustomed to do, but instead was silent as it came out. "Eshe," the tired mother whispered, naming her female child.
A couple years later, Anck-sa-namun died, and Eshe was going to take her mother's punishment, atone for Anck-sa-namun's sins. She was tortured for years, until the Med-jai thought the time fit for her death. Her tongue was cut out, she was cursed with the horrid curse called the Hom-dai, and cursed with a curse so terrible it was even more feared than the Hom-dai. The curse gave her the immortality and power of the gods.
Her last words echoed forever and were inscribed on her coffin.
"I freely take the punishment for my mother; I am the willing victim."
