Chapter 9: Narcissa Malfoy
I never saw someone that hysterical! After saying I was supposed to be dead, she started to scream and threw herself at me. She screamed she took care of me and she was willing to do it again to protect her family and her house. Draco tried to get me out of the bed. Being naked and intertwined in the bed sheets, he couldn't do it quickly enough and the bitch, I mean lady, still had time to slap me once or twice. Not being able to get away, Draco just laid over me and received the other punches. Her screaming finally attracted the other people present: Marty, Iso and Maria. Marty grab her by the shoulders and got her out of the room. Draco pulled on a pair of jeans and left behind them. He took her somewhere, I don't know exactly where. Honestly, I don't give a damn. Can someone tell me who's this crazy bitch! Perhaps she forced her way in the house? No, surly not, otherwise her picture wouldn't be in the living room. The door opens and a pale Draco enters: " Ely, let me introduce you to my mom, Narcissa!"
- What?
- You heard me; she's my mother. I don't know what she's doing here. She never comes here that's why I decided to come with you in the first place. She lives in our family manor, in London. As I told you, she didn't come here for five years. It's a coincidence.
- Well, I don't know about a coincidence, I call it a rotten piece of luck! Why did she go ballistic when she saw me?
- Because you look exactly like your grandmother. When we look quickly, we could think you're her.
- And that justifies such an extreme reaction because?"
Draco seems not at ease. He knows he must answer me but I would bet that it's a part of the story he didn't wish to tell me. On the other hand, he knows he can't leave thing the way they are. I can see an epic battle going on between his head and his heart. I have this ugly feeling that I won't like that I'll hear.
" I told you about how my grandfather died. I also told you that your grandmother was found guilty and sentenced to Azkaban. What I never told you is that it was my mom, who were then sixteen, that insisted on accusing her. She was the only witness at Lauria's trial. She always thought that Lauria wanted to destroy her family and my mom did all she could to have her condemned. She always disapproved the opinions Lauria was trying to get accepted by the wizarding community. Lauria was generous and honest. To her, there wasn't any difference between what wizards call "blood degree". The half-muggle, the squib and the pure blood were all the same to her. They were all witches and wizards but, before that, they were humans. My mom and her family had always been for the noble and purity of blood. They all think that only the one who comes from pure ancestry deserved the privileges. Mother always thought Lauria had taken the wrong path. She couldn't understand that a pure witch, the fifteenth generation of pure blood, couldn't see it the way she did. I'm talking about Lauria, of course. You're the seventeenth generation.
- I see and she hates me because my grandmother was not a racist. That's a little extreme, don't you think?
- Depends. In the wizarding community, it's a touchy subject. But what really pissed her off is that her father wanted to join Lauria's rank. He left my grandmother, who didn't agree with Lauria either. Grandfather was working in the Minister's private office. He was really well placed to convince the minister with Lauria's ideas. Mother thought Lauria seduced him with a love charm. One day, Lauria was visiting grandfather in this very house. They had a drink and, when my mom entered the living room, she found her father dead, his head resting on Lauria's lap. Mother started to scream. Lauria did all she could to save him. My mom was hysterical, just as she was today. Lauria called the authorities herself. When they got here, she told them that grandfather took two or three sips of his Firewisky and fell dead on the floor. Therefore, my mom used her influence and money to have her sent to Azkaban.
- I know it can be bad but...
- Wait Ely there's more. I also said that my father, Lucius, died few years ago. I never told you how.
- He died in the battle against Voldemort?
- No, he never got to see the war. I have no proof but I'm pretty sure my mom had something to do with it. I'm not saying she killed him but she's implied for sure. She was the one who forced him the join the Dark Lord. Anytime he went against her will, she would use the Cruciatus Curse on him. I grew up in the fear of what she would do to me. One day, father had enough. He said he would leave her and join Dumbledore Order. He got killed drinking a glass of Firewisky...just like my grandfather. The doctors said he died of a heartattack but the two cases are too alike. It can't be just a coincidence. My mom thought Louisa killed him but, this time, she had no proof. Louisa saw him an hour before he died but was not there when he did. They couldn't accuse her of anything. I couldn't believe Louisa had something to do with it and mother wanted me to think so. I left. I ran away from home and from her. I went to live at your aunt Louisa's place and joined the Order to fight against her. She never knew. She always thought I was flying by my own wings. I rarely see her since that time.
- Okay...well I have nothing to do in your family's story. She should be happy to find out we're together! After all, I'm a pure blood! I know it might have gave her a chock to see me but she will realise I'm not Lauria. I'll talk to her.
- Ely, I don't think it's a good idea. What are you deaf? You didn't hear what I just told you?
- You said it yourself, Draco. In both cases, they never found the murderer. Perhaps one of the deatheater killed your father to avoid him joining Dumbledore! As for your grandfather, we weren't there. Perhaps he had more enemies than he said so in his journal. Draco, this woman is your mother! If everything keeps going as well as they are between us, I will have to see her. I don't want our relationship to start on a misunderstanding.
- You don't know her as I do. She's crazy enough to be mad at the heirs of the person who hurt her.
- She can't be that bad! You have a bad opinion of your mother! I'll talk to her."
***
I get out of the room and start looking for Narcissa Malfoy. Even with all I just learned, my spirit's clear. One could think that I would be mad at her because she got my grandmother sent to Azkaban but, nevertheless, I understand her. I imagine finding my own father dead in the arms of someone else than my mother and I know I would've done the same. I would do all I could to serve justice. That's what I'll tell her. She'll understand, it can't be otherwise. We're alike. She must love her son and I love him too. Two pure bloods that might, someday, pursue her ancestry.
I finally find Narcissa on the fourth floor, in the Winter garden. She's sitting there, in the middle of the empty flower boxes. Strangely, she seems to belong to that cold and sinister place. She's wearing typical witch dress in the shades of brown, really long. She looks like coming back from the eighteenth century with that dress and her tea service. " Good day, Mrs Malfoy" I say from the doorway. I step inside and take a seat in front of her. I'm not at ease. I feel like a living anachronism with my jeans and my "bad religion" t-shirt. " Are you feeling better?" I try again. She finally raises her eyes on me. Her look is cold and distant. Her grey eyes, just as her son, seem to be made of steel. " How would you want me to feel better? I just learned that my only son became infatuated with a whore. I also learned that, for a month, she's been eating at my table, living under my roof and share my only heir's bed. Oh! I have every reason to feel better, haven't I?"
I'm totally chocked; she just called me a whore!
" How do you dare?
- And how do YOU dare? You came to finish Lauria's work? That slut did everything she could to destroy my family. She went as far as seducing my father. When she realised it would lead to nothing, she killed him. Then it was her daughter Louisa, who seduced my Lucius. Then again, our bounds were too strong for her and, like mother like daughter, she killed him. Now another one comes for my only son! This time, I am ready. Draco will never make the same mistake those sorry men did before him. This one's mine and you're not going to take him away from me. Oh! Right now he loves you, at least, he thinks he does. I can understand, he's a man. How could he resist your eyes and your hair? Just like the other. Same hypocrite smile, same ease to manipulate others. When you get what you want, you leave. Keep in mind that MY Draco will have his eyes open and when he will, he will throw you away just like a child gets rid of a broken toy. Once rejected, don't you dare coming back to get revenge, I shall be waiting for you even if it's the last thing I do. You're lost, poor girl.
- Why don't you throw me out right now? You would get rid of me immediately!
- That's what I tried to do with Lauria and Louisa. I didn't work and my father and husband got mad at me because they still cared about those whores. If I throw you out right now, Draco would not forgive me. No, I will let time do its work. The humiliation will be greater and comprehension more accurate if Draco does the thinking himself. Trust me, he will. I'll make sure of that."
What can I answer to that! All I can do is turn around and leave the room.
