*Ring Ring* *Ring Ring* The phone called loud and clear in the Kinkirk home.
"Hello?"
"Yes, is this Lucy Kinkirk?" A female voice asked.
"Yes it is." Lucy answered.
"Hello Mrs. Kinkirk, this is Donna at Dr. Camden's office." She said. "I'm calling to remind you that you have an appointment at 1:15 this afternoon for your four month check up."
"Oh, yes, I know. Thank you."
"OK. See you in a few hours."
"OK. Bye." Lucy hung up the phone and put her hand over her stomach, which was already beginning to bulge. She'd have to remember to ask Matt about that. Aren't you supposed to start showing in your fifth month?
"Luce!" Kevin's voice brought Lucy back to reality. She smiled and they hugged. Kevin slid his arms around Lucy's waist and lifted up her shirt so he could but his hand over her stomach.
"Can you believe that there's a baby in there?" She asked in wonder.
"It's amazing isn't it?" Kevin replied. Lucy smiled and they kissed.
"Who was on the phone?"
"A secretary from Matt's office. She was just reminding me of my appointment this afternoon. Four months already."
"Yeah, wow. What time is your appointment?"
"1:15."
"Oh, no!" Kevin said angrily.
"What?"
"I'm going to go and speak at Ruthie and Peter's school today at one!"
"Oh! What are you speaking about again?"
"They're having an assembly about police officers, and Peter asked me to come in. Can't you re-schedule your appointment?" He asked hopefully.
"No, and I'm late going in there anyway. Plus, I have to ask Matt about something." She said.
"What about?"
"My stomach! You're not supposed to show at all until like the fifth month and I'm only in my fourth and I've been showing a little since my third."
"I'm sure it's OK." They kissed again.
"It's 12:45. I should go up to Jennings to get ready to speak now. Sorry I'm gonna miss it. I love you." He said. He took her in his arms and they kissed for a few minutes before Kevin grabbed his car keys and took off out the door.
At five after one, Lucy got in the car and drove to the doctor's office. She had barely sat down in the waiting room when she heard her name being called. The nurse gave her the basic check up.
"I'll go get the doctor. You're in for an ultra sound, right?"
"Right." Lucy said.
"Ok. Why don't you put on this robe, and Dr. Camden will be right in. Lucy nodded her head. The nurse drew the curtain to give Lucy some privacy while she changed, and she left the room. After Lucy finished changing, she opened the curtain again. A knocking was heard at the door, and Matt came in.
"Hey Luce." He said with a smile. "Four months already, huh?"
"Yeah! Exciting!" She said happily.
"Why don't you lie down on the table." He told her. She did. Matt pulled out the ultra sound machine from behind the curtain. He walked over to Lucy and opened the front of her gown so her stomach was revealed. He rubbed some goop onto her stomach.
"So how is everything going? How are you feeling? Any concerns?" He asked her while the substance settled on her stomach.
"I'm feeling fine. But look at me. I've already got a bit of a belly!"
"Wow, you're right!" Matt said, studying her stomach carefully.
"You ARE only at four months...right?"
"Yeah!"
"Hmm. I would have guess late in the fifth or sixth by looking at you."
"Gee, thanks."
"Hey, I'm telling the truth!" Matt said with a laugh. "Well, some women begin to show earlier than others, but I'll see if anything comes up on the ultra sound." He switched the ultra sound on and slowly, an image appeared. Matt studied the screen carefully.
"Well, THAT explains it!" Matt said with a little laugh.
"What?" Lucy asked nervously. "Is something wrong?"
"I wouldn't say...wrong..." Matt flipped another switch which let the heart beat sound throughout the room.
"Do you hear that?" He asked slowly.
"Yes, Matt, I hear my baby's heat beat...is something wrong with the baby's heart? Matt! What's going on?" She asked getting more and more antsy by the second.
"Calm down!" Matt said. He reached out and took his sister's hand in his.
"Lucy...you're not going to have a baby...," He said.
"WHAT? I can hear the heart beat and I didn't miscarry and I know for a fact that I'm pregnant.
"Will you let me finish my sentence?" Matt asked. "As I was saying! You're not going to have a baby...you're going to have three. You're pregnant with triplets."
"No, Matt, this isn't funny." She said seriously.
"I know, Luce. I'm not kidding. Look. This is the first baby...here's the second...and here's the third." He said, pointing to three figures on the screen. Lucy had tears streaming down her face.
"What am I going to do?" She cried. "Kevin and I aren't ready for triplets! We were nervous about having ONE baby right now, I mean, we just gotten our own home and our lives are starting off. We had planned a pregnancy for next year, and then it just kind of happened. No, we can't have triplets." She said certainly. Matt stood up and came and sat next to Lucy.
"I'm sorry, Luce, but....you're going to." He said gently. He wiped the goo off of his little sister's stomach and shut the ultra sound off. He helped her to sit up and then held her in his arms for minutes, letting her cry.
"It's going to be OK." He told her.
"It'll have to be." She said. "I've had a hard day, Matt. I just want to go home. I have to talk to Kevin." She said. Matt nodded.
"Go ahead. We're done anyway. Let me walk you to your car. I'm on lunch break after this anyway. Lucy was too tired to object. Matt walked her out to her car in silence. When they got there, he hugged her tightly again.
"It'll be OK." He told her again. "And please remember that I'm here. Call me if you need anything. I'll make your 5 month appointment for you when I'm back at the office." Lucy nodded.
"Thanks." She said and got in her car. When she got home, she walked inside and layed down on her bed.
"Three. Three!" She thought. "What are we going to do?" She heard the front door open.
"Lucy?" Kevin called. "Lucy, are you home? Where are you?"
"In the bedroom!" She called. Kevin came in with a smile, but his smile melted when he saw Lucy's tear-stained face.
"Baby, what's wrong?" He cried and took her in his arms.
"We need to talk." She said. Kevin sat down next to her on the bed.
"OK, what's up?" He asked.
"Kev...I don't know how to say this." She started. "Matt found something today during the appointment..."
"What? What is it?" He asked quickly.
"I'm pregnant with...triplets." She said quietly.
"Wow!" Kevin exclaimed. "That's great!"
"What are you talking about?" Lucy asked him. "We were nervous about having one! This is three kids, three newborns, Kevin!"
"I know. It'll be a lot to start out with, but just think, Luce. We've always planned on having a lot of kids, and now we have a jump-start! Just think of it as two less pregnancies. We were going to have at least three in time, and now it's happening!" His excitement always astounded Lucy. She kissed him.
"I Guess you're right..." She said. "But are you sure? I mean, Kevin, can we do this?"
"We can do anything." He said. He glanced into the nursery across the hall. "But we might need to buy a few more cribs."
