The Reason Why It Snowed That Day
-hajime
"Bring me closer to him, Kakashi." He whispered with his dying breath.
And I did. I lifted Zabuza and laid him beside his angel, the perfect, protective child he raised by himself, the son named "Haku". Life was slowly draining away from him and I could feel it.
I watched him touch Haku's face in complete adoration, his face twisted in guilt and repentance as he tried to keep his thoughts to himself but failed because of his lack of strength. I could feel everything he felt as he blamed himself for taking Haku for granted.
Zabuza stared contently on the younger ninja's face.
Haku's visage was pure. It was innocent. It was angelic. It was heavenly. It was everything else Zabuza knows he can never be no matter how much he tries. And yet Haku's beautiful face was tainted with blood. The same blood that used to flow freely in his veins when he was alive.
Yes, the boy was dead.
Zabuza hurt and I hurt as well.
Haku looks so alive...so full of life that it was so hard to just accept the fact that the kid had stopped breathing minutes ago.
Snow began to fall as I felt the last pieces of Zabuza's life fade away.
The heavens were mourning.
Perhaps the angels in heaven cried that day. They mourned for the loss of two people. One is Zabuza, the evil one, the wicked one. While the other one was Haku, the loyal follower.
Or perhaps the angel's tears were not for mourning. Perhaps it was of joy that the two were finally free from this world of lies. They were free to believe in what they wanted to. While we remain here, chained to the facts of what a ninja has got to be as long as he lives.
And the snow continued.
I watched as some of it thaw in my hands.
Perhaps life was as short as a snowflake that melts. Perhaps it was as short as the instance to when the snow falls from the sky to the time it melts on the ground.
Haku. White. Snow.
What name shall suit the kid other than that? The snow was white, it was pure. As pure as the loyalty Haku had for the father figure in his life. As pure as his intentions were when he saved the person he treasured most from death. As pure as his happiness was when he knew that he had somehow been of some use to Zabuza.
Perhaps it was the reason why it snowed that day.
Perhaps the heavens wanted to remind us that life was short. And that it should never be taken for granted.
