Chapter 3: Heat
The next morning, when they entered the Great Hall together, many of the heads sneaked a peek at them but Amos and Arabella didn't notice them at all. Lily and James sat with each other eyeing their cereal wearily. Jess came and sat beside Lily.
"You know you're not going to get any attention unless you heat things up, here," she commented. James looked up from his cereal and looked inquisitive.
"Heat things up? What do you mean?"
Jess shrugged. "Kisses. Hugs. Right now, people are talking but if you want people to keep talking you'd better act madly in love."
Sirius joined in. "And you might try being a little more enthusiastic about it too," he added helpfully. "Make it look real. And actually touching each other isn't such a bad idea either."
Jess nodded in agreement. "Yeah, right now you guys look like two zombies, no offense," she said, causing Sirius to burst out laughing.
So, when they finished eating, Lily and James walked to class together. Taking their friends' advice, James slipped an arm around Lily waist. He could feel everybody's eyes on his neck, he just grinned and kissed Lily's cheek sweetly making her cheeks turn the slightest shade of pink.
The next couple of weeks went the same way until they finally warmed up to each other, enough to admit at least to themselves that they enjoyed each other's company.
One day, after class, they went to the library together again. This time they talked as they worked. Madame Podemore had to come over to quiet them down. Lily was in a fit of giggles at what James had just said. James was looking pretty pleased with himself. Soon, they were attracting looks from many of the students in the library.
They grinned and decided to 'heat things up' as their friends had suggested. James wrapped his arms around Lily's waist and kissed her lightly on the lips. He couldn't help but notice how her hair still smelled of shampoo and how her lips were scented like strawberries. Her face felt silky smooth but he quickly shook these thoughts out of his head as he tried desperately to remember why they were doing all this and how they were they were mortal enemies a mere two days before...but he couldn't...
In the meantime, Lily was savoring the soft feel of his lips on hers. He was kissing her so softly it was as if he was afraid he would hurt her if he did more. She detected traces of the aftershave that he had applied in the morning. After the kiss, she buried her face into his chest, wanting to remember this forever. But then realizing what she was thinking, she shook herself mentally. She tried to remember Amos's striking face but she couldn't...every time she closed her eyes, all she could see was James...smiling at her.
