Chapter 4: The Dream
That night, Lily had a fretful sleep.
She was in a charming house where each wall was covered with pictures. Pictures of herself and...and James! Some of them were of the Marauders with Lily and Jess. One was of Jess hugging Sirius while Lily was wrapped around James. Then finally, the last picture was of and older Lily and James but here, Lily was holding a little boy...the boy looked familiar...he had messy hair just like James but he had eyes exactly like Lily's. Was that...? Before she could figure it out, she heard voices from the kitchen. In there, there was an older Lily and older James standing watching the door, looking white with fear. James yelled to the older Lily. "Lily, run, I'll hold him off!" "I'm not leaving you, James! I can't!" "Harry needs you, Lily!! Please!" James pointed to the boy holding the skirt of Lily. The boy was from the picture. "James, I love you." "Lily, I love you more than you'll ever know," he pulled her into an intense put quick kiss. "No, Lily, please!" The kitchen door flew open. A man with a high- pitched laugh entered. "Run, Lily!" yelled James. Lily ran into the living room but she turned just in time to see James's body fall to the ground with a look of shock still on his face and she burst into tears. But she held the little boy close to her and ran into the living room but she was cornered. The man was towering over her. "Move aside, silly girl!" Lily held the boy protectively. "No!!! Don't kill him!! Kill me instead!! Just spare Harry!!" "Stand aside, stupid girl!! You don't need to die!!" Lily didn't budge so the man whispered some words and she felt herself drop.
The present-day Lily woke up with a cold sweat with tears streaming down her face. She quickly looked around her and sighed with relief as she saw the familiar surroundings of her dormitory. She lay back and tried to go back to sleep, telling herself that it was just a dream and dreams don't mean anything, but she couldn't. She got up and went into the common room, which was empty. She lay down on a couch and watched the movements of the fire in the fireplace until she finally did fall asleep.
The next morning when she woke up, her feet were on James's lap and he was reading. When he saw that she had woken up, he tickled the bottom of her feet. Lily just merely smiled weakly but he noticed.
"What's wrong, Evans?" he asked, genuinely concerned.
Lily shook her head. "Just this really weird dream I had." Then she added, "It was nothing really..."
James shrugged. "You don't look too convinced yourself."
"I am," whispered Lily more to herself than to him.
James didn't push her for more information and when their friends came down, they went to breakfast. James had his arm Lily's shoulder and she had her arm around his waist.
"They make a cute couple, don't they?" whispered Jess to Sirius, who nodded.
"I haven't heard James talk about Arabella since they started this charade," he whispered back.
Jess raised his eyes in surprise. "Really? Because Lily hasn't said a word about Diggory either. Maybe this charade is as much of a charade."
Sirius nodded. "Honestly, I think they were made for each other."
"It's like their souls are entwined together," she whispered.
"Exactly," said Sirius breathily, noticing for the first time how beautiful Jess was. Her dark brown hair was elegantly settled on her shoulders and her light green eyes shone merrily.
Jess smiled at him warmly. He was so nice once you got to know him.
In the meantime, James nudged Lily and discreetly showed her Jess and Sirius. "Hey, looks like our best friends might hook up soon. I have never seen Sirius look at a girl like that. And Jess seems pretty head over heels herself." He smiled happily at his friend.
However Lily bit her lip, remembering her dream. "Yeah," she said sadly, earning her an odd look from James.
"Well, I guess you'll have Amos soon, too," he said a bit huffily, thinking Lily was sad about not having what her friend had, herself.
"Yeah," repeated Lily softly.
That night, in the library, there was a tension in the air between Lily and James. They were working in silence and every once in a while; they would glance at each other. After a while, James couldn't take it any more.
"Evans, something is wrong." His eyes looked sorry.
"Nothing is wrong, Potter!"
"Then why are you acting so weird? I mean yesterday you were..." he was trying to choose his words carefully, "You were all happy and today you're all...all sad or something."
"I'm just not having a good day, I guess," she said evasively.
"You were like this in the morning. What is that dream?" He saw her expression and instantly he knew that he had gotten the answer. "Evans, what was that dream about?" he demanded.
"That is none of your business!" she whispered angrily, not wanting to draw attention to them.
"Maybe it's not, but I had this really weird feeling that its got something to do with me...you've acting weird a lot more around me..." He stroked her hair soothingly and he kissed her lips again, very gently, their lips barely touching. "It's okay, you know, Lily," he whispered in her ear. But when he turned looked at her, he saw that her face was streaming with silent tears. "Lily, don't cry, I'm sorry," he said desperately.
Lily quickly wiped away her tears. "James, I think this was a mistake, I've got to go," she said with her voice trembling.
But James didn't release her hand. "But why Lily?" he searched her face but she looked away.
"Because I want it that way."
