Chapter 6: Amos and Arabella
The next morning rumors swarmed about their breakup. They still sat near each other during mealtimes, because Jess and Sirius wanted to sit together, but they didn't talk to each other or even look at each other.
As soon as they're breakup had been confirmed, Lily saw Amos walking towards her. She tried to hide but there was no way out. Amos was standing in front of her.
"Er, hi, Lily," he said nervously. "I was wondering whether you'd like to go out sometime."
Lily paused. She saw James watching her from the side. But she forced herself to smile. "Sure, Amos, I'd love to," she muttered with much difficulty. Amos hurried away and when Lily turned back, she glanced at James. The hurt was evident in his eyes. He shook it away and turned away from her, not seeing the single tear roll down her cheek.
That night, James asked out Arabella and she said yes. The next day, they were found in the library working together. Or rather, James was working and Arabella was giving him a detailed description of every article of clothing in her entire wardrobe. James always smiled at her even though he wasn't enjoying her company. He found himself comparing Arabella to Lily and he always came up short.
Lily herself wasn't having much luck with Amos. All he ever did was tell her how much better he was at Quidditch then James. She didn't get to talk much about what she wanted like she could with James. But she just smiled and nodded at everything he said.
Time flew by, and soon everybody was preparing for the Christmas Ball and James and Lily were equally miserable but they still hadn't said a word to each other. Lily hadn't let Amos kiss her yet and James hadn't kiss Arabella yet. Every time they were lonely, they would remember the kisses they had shared together, pretending it didn't mean a thing to them. But on the night of the Christmas Ball, they decided to brush these thoughts away and enjoy whom they were with.
Lily dressed in a beautiful bottle green gown. Jess was in a similar gown except it was a lighter green. The Marauders where dressed in black, while Amos was dressed in dark blue. Arabella dressed in a light blue to go with her eyes.
Lily looked at James sorrowfully. He looked really good in black. But instead of being in his arms having the time of her life, she was gazing at him from a distance, with Diggory beside her. But before the ball began, the head boy and girl were to have a dance. That was James and Lily!
They were pushed to the middle, with everybody watching. James slipped his arms around her, memories flooding back but he did look her in the eye. Lily did the same but once the music began and they started dancing, she sneaked a glance at his face. He was smiling at the audience and he turned back to her and caught her eyes. Instantly they seemed captivated by each other's eyes and Lily froze. James gently nudged her along and he looked searchingly her eyes again but she didn't look at him again. After the dance was over, she quickly returned to Amos without saying a word to James. Amos smiled at her.
"Gee, Lily, that must've been weird, dancing with your old boyfriend. Looked as if you had a moment there."
Lily faked an eye rolled. "Whatever, Amos. I'm going to get some punch." When she went to the punch bowl, she saw that someone else had joined her...someone wearing black. She looked up. It was James.
"Hello, Lily," he said quietly.
"Hello, James," she said a bit breathlessly. He was standing right beside her and every once in a while his elbow would bump with hers.
"Having a nice time with Diggory?" he asked politely.
"You might say that," she answered vaguely. "How about you and Arabella? A match made in heaven?"
"You might say that," he said darkly.
Lily ignored that. "Well, I guess it was best for both of us, would you agree?"
James nodded curtly before turning to leave.
The rest of the night went by quickly. She danced with Amos but she went to bed early complaining of a headache. The next morning, at the foot of her bed, she found many more presents that usual. She found her usual present from her parents, which was a green sweater to match her eyes. Then from her sister she got a card. From Jess, she got a collection of magazines with a huge bag of makeup. From Amos, she got a charm bracelet with a lily charm. From Remus, she got a book on very advanced charms. From Sirius she got a set of wizard's chess. From Peter, she got a box of chocolate frogs. James had probably given her the best present though. It was a small, snowy, white kitten. Other then that, she got a silver necklace with a heart shaped locket. On it was a note:
To the loveliest girl in the world, no one can take away her place in my heart.
Lily frowned. Was the note from James or Amos? She shrugged but then she put it away safely in her trunk. She went to the Great Hall and found Amos at the Hufflepuff table.
"Thanks for your Christmas gift, Amos." She said.
"Did you like it? I had no idea what to get you, and then I saw that bracelet," he said. Lily noticed that he wasn't looking forward to her saying anything more, so he probably didn't send her that. She turned around to the Gryffindor table and saw James. He was sitting there, with his spoon in midair, watching her.
Get a load of me, get a load of you
Walkin' down the street, and I hardly know you
It's just like we were meant to be
Holding hands with you, and we're out at night
Got a girlfriend, you say it isn't right
And I've got someone waiting too
This is, this is just the beginning
We're already wet, and we're gonna go swimming
Why can't I breathe whenever I think about you
Why can't I speak whenever I talk about you
It's inevitable, it's a fact that we're gonna get down to it
So tell me
Why can't I breathe whenever I think about you
Isn't this the best part of breakin' up
Finding someone else you can't get enough of
Someone who wants to be with you too
It's an itch we know we are gonna scratch
Gonna take a while for this egg to hatch
But wouldn't it be beautiful
Here we are, we're at the beginning
We haven't f***ed yet, but my heads spinning
Why can't I breathe whenever I think about you
Why can't I speak whenever I talk about you
It's inevitable, it's a fact that we're gonna get down to it
So tell me
Why can't I breathe whenever I think about you
I'd love for you to make me wonder
Where it's goin'
I'd love for you to pull me under
Somethin's growin'
for this that we can control
Baby I am dyin'
Why can't I breathe whenever I think about you
Why can't I speak whenever I talk about you
Why can't I breathe whenever I think about you
Why can't I speak whenever I talk about you
It's inevitable, it's a fact that we're gonna get down to it
So tell me
