Years ago, a little boy brought light and life back into this gloomy manor. He pulled a young man from the brink and made him think about the consequences of the life or death decisions he made each night.
Although the little boy was carefree on the surface, the deaths of his parents still haunted him. The young man trained him as an assistant in his quest, as Robin, the Boy Wonder.
But the little boy, despite his maturity in the battlefield of the night, was by day still a child. He needed a babysitter, and Commissioner Gordon's daughter was hired.
Though a studious girl, when together with Dicky, she was capable of unparalleled mischief. She was in charge, but the two of them were fast friends. Dicky was more relaxed with her than anyone. He said from the time he was nine that he was going to marry her when he grew up. I believed him.
As a teenager, she joined their crusade of the night. There was more freedom for them in the night, hidden behind the masks. I'm sure things happened between them that He never knew. I'm just as sure that it never went too far as she gave him time to grow up.
She is lit with an inner fire. It dimmed when she was confined to earth, but it was not extinguished. Her will is indomitable; she used tragedy as an impetus for growth, and she is now the Oracle.
Today is her wedding day. She has asked me to join her father in escorting her down the aisle. When she widens her eyes, who can resist?
I kneel down to arrange her wedding gown around her feet. The socialites may gossip, but she is the most beautiful bride I've seen among the elite. As I stand, she pulls me close enough to kiss my cheek.
"Thank you, Alfred."
I, the gentleman's gentleman, struggle to hide my blush as I answer, "It is a pleasure, Miss Barbara."
After all, we're all just a little bit in love with Barbara Gordon.
