"No," she repeated.

"What?" The gawky boy hunched over in awe. This was not going as rehearsed.

"You heard me," she snapped. "I said no."

"N-n-no?" he stuttered. "Why?"

The girl eased back against the corridor wall, her green eyes settling into a piercing gaze. "You should have planned ahead," she began her lecture tersely, "it's two days before our spring dance, and I refused to risk going dateless." She tossed her rust colored hair over her shoulder. "So I accepted someone else's offer."

He'd been afraid this was going to happen. It had taken him weeks to work up the nerve to ask her out. Severus and Lily hadn't exactly parted ways on the nicest of terms. Unless you count screaming and yelling over superior heritage as a favorite past time, that is.

The girl drew a deep breath, knowing from the jealous look in his eyes what would come next.

"Who is it?" he hissed.

"James Potter," Lily replied curtly.

That stung.  Choosing another guy over him hurt, but choosing James Potter over him nearly bloody well killed him. "Him? What could you possibly see in that brainless git?" Severus arched an eyebrow suspiciously. "You weren't pissed at the time, were you?" It must have been the hair, Snape thought, subconsciously running a hand through his own oily mess.

Lily rolled her eyes, familiar with Snape's hair fixation. "Yes, Severus, I'm going with James for his impeccably unkempt hair. Because that fact that he's polite and has no problem introducing me to his friends is fully an ineffectual motive. You've caught me." Her voice dripped with sarcasm. "And, no, I was not drunk. Thanks for the vote of confidence, you arsehole. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have places to go, people to see." With that, she turned swiftly and marched toward the stairwell.

"Wait! Lily, I-"

"Oh, sod off, you prat."

She left then, and Severus Snape watched her red headed figure as she weaved between the browns and blondes; heading in the direction of the Quidditch pitch.

"I love you," he whispered softly, "bitch."

"Hey, James." Lily approached a boy who was unloading himself from his SwiftSilver212.

"Come to watch me, have you Lily?" The boy grinned, peeking out from behind his unruly onyx fringe.

Lily let out an exaggerated sigh and leaned in to brush the black strands aside, just as James attempted to kiss her freckle smattered nose.

"James Potter!" She giggled, swerving to dodge yet another kiss and toppling him in the process.

James grinned goofily, looking up at her and crossing his arms to protect his head.

Okay, Lily conceded, maybe it was the hair.

A/N: I wrote this in honor of Kristina, who only reads L/J, on New Year's. Due to laziness on my part and on that of Jessie's, I've only just posted it. Too short to be substantial, but you'd make me happy if you reviewed to tell me how much you liked/ /couldn't tell because it was too short/ disliked my ficlet.
