Chapter Title: Going Down
KND Antarctic Base
Klaus followed the bodily traces to a large section of the base marked 'Sector A-6'. Through the visual sensors of the SPIDR he saw the residue trail lead to an opened weapons locker, then out of it and down a path flanked by several storage pods. He smirked to himself, amused by the KND operatives' futile attempts to evade him.
Then, as he turned the robot down the walkway between the storage pods, he saw the trail of bodily traces lead into three different ways. 'Probably trying to split up in order to evade me better.' Thought Klaus.
"NOW!" the SPIDR's audio sensors suddenly picked up. Klaus quickly spun the cockpit toward the direction he heard the sound. But, before he could see anything, he suddenly felt something slam violently into the SPIDR. Before he could even think about what had slammed into his robot, he felt another projectile do so. He had just started to guess that he was being fired upon when something large fell onto the SPIDR. The light was suddenly blocked as he felt the object impact hard... []---------[]
"Awright!" 4 said. "It worked."
"Ooh, we squashed the big bug." 3 said.
4 smiled as he observed their handiwork. 2 and 3 had fired at the robot, distracting it. As it was distracted, 4 had released the unfinished aircraft the crane was carrying. Dropping it smack onto the nerd machine.
2, though, didn't share 4's celebratory attitude. He was sure that his friend Klaus had been inside the robot. He hoped that they hadn't hurt him too severely. But, as he headed for the pile of rubble the robot was under, 2 heard a slow laugh emanate from where the robot was covered.
"Good, KND," he suddenly heard a German accented voice say. "I did not expect that, vell done."
The rubble pile then flew outward. Out of the pile came the nerd robot, its pilot was grinning. The pilot's eyes met 2's eyes and a hint of surprise entered into them.
"Ach, Numbah 2, mein old friend." The robot's pilot greeted. "A pity, I vould rather not vant to have to capture you meinself."
"Numbah 117..." 2 said slowly.
"Numbah 2, you know this weirdo?" 4 asked.
"Yeah, Numbah 2," 3 said in a cheery voice. "Who's the weirdo? Do you know him?"
"Yeah, he's the former 117, Klaus Heinkel." 2 said. He looked at Klaus. "He used to be my friend."
"Used to be?" Klaus said in false shock. "Vhy, Hoagie, I'm hurt."
"Look, Klaus," 2 said in a reasoning tone. "Don't do this man. I know the KND haven't exactly been nice to you and the other nerds, but that's no reason to---"
"No reason?!" Klaus interrupted, expression turning hard. "Ve vurked our butts out for der KND, and vat do ve get for it? Disrespect and mockery! Nothing ve did vas good enough, no matter how hard ve tried no von ever gave us the respect ve deserved."
"Yeah, yeah," 4 said. "Everybody's got a darn sob story. All this because some blokes bullied and made fun of ya? Hah! Ah say suck it up, nerd boy."
Klaus turned to 4, a dangerous expression on his face. "Ah, Vallabee Beatles. Also known as operative Numbah 4. I know of your type, you value physical schtrength above anything else."
Klaus reared up one of the SPIDR's legs and brought it down hard. It struck 4, sending him headfirst into a metal storage pod. 4 moaned as he slumped to the ground, unconscious.
"Numbah 4!" 2 and 3 yelled in alarm, running toward the limp form of 4.
"It is also your type of person that beat me up on occasion, just for fun!" Klaus said in a tone of sadistic fury. "Now I'm doing der beating up, und it feels good."
"Wally!" 3 cried out as she cradled the boy. "Wake up, say something!"
"Oh man, Numbah 4..." 2 said in shock. He saw blood trickle down the Australian's head. Clearly, Klaus had knocked 4 too hard.
"Why did you do that, Klaus? Why?" 2 mumbled as he turned to Klaus. He didn't believe his old friend could be capable of seriously hurting somebody.
"I've changed, Hoagie. I'm not der veakling who covered every time some bully beat him up. I'm not that person any longer." Klaus said coldly. "Now, vill you surrender? Or vill I have to hurt both of you?"
2 didn't answer, he just stared at Klaus in stunned silence. 3, however, wasn't similarly stunned. On the contrary, she was angry, very angry. She had seen someone she cared about seriously hurt, and that was enough to sap the ditzy happiness right out of her.
"Hurt?" 3 asked in a distorted version of her voice. 2 turned to her, he'd heard that tone before. During the Operation: LICE incident, when the lice wrecked her toys. She been enraged then, but she seemed much more angrier now.
"Hurt?" 3 repeated. "WE'LL SEE WHO'S GONNA END UP HURT, YOU SLIMEBALL!!!"
Nerd Star Space Station
Alden shook in rage. The Nerd Star had taken a lot of damage and was starting to depressurize rapidly. As he struggled to put on his space suit, he felt the station lurch as its orbit decayed. He gritted his teeth, this was his fault. He had been too overconfident, and that had blinded him to the fact that the KND craft could still fire at their station, despite the fact that it was falling apart.
He clenched his fists. "Jane, Maria, take Allan and go to one of the escape pods. Go down to where Klaus is, he should've neutralized the KND base by now."
"What about yourself?" Jane asked.
I have some unfinished business to attend to." He said as he grabbed two mechanical-looking gloves from a box.
"But---" Jane started to say.
"Don't argue!" Alden snapped. "Just go!"
Jane looked stricken, but she didn't argue any further. She and Maria took Allan and started to head toward the escape pod area.
"A-a-den, a-den." Allan called out to his brother.
"Don't worry, Allan." Alden said. "Big Brother will catch up later."
As Jane, Maria, and Allan left, Alden put on the mechanical gloves. They were Force Field Generator Gloves (FFGGs) designed by Jane. The gloves could produce a force field capable of shielding the wearer from something as powerful as a missile. But it could do more than that, it could also be used as a weapon. If you pointed it at something or somebody, you could use the force field it generated to fling them away, even crush them.
Alden flashed a shark-like grin as he put on the gloves. He pointed it at a chair and fired. The chair flew back several feet. "Obi-wan Kenobi, eat your heart out."
He headed down to the station's holding area. []---------[]
1 and 5 looked at each other. They had felt the explosions and guessed what was going on. 274 and 30C had managed to successfully attack the Nerd Star. They felt the oxygen leaking out, they also felt its orbit start to decay. They smiled, they had won.
But their smiled soon disappeared as they remembered that they were still locked in the Nerd Star. They still had their space suits on, so the depressurization wasn't a problem. But they were still locked inside a holding cell of a space station that was going down. Now THAT was a problem.
Then, they heard their communicator crackle. "Numbahs 1 and 5, where are you?"
"274!" they both exclaimed.
"We're in the station but we can't find you." 274 said over the radio.
"We're in a holding cell." 1 said.
The radio was silent for a moment. Finally, 274 spoke again. "Okay, we found a sort of internal map here. We've figured out where the holding area is and we're coming for you."
"Okay," 5 said. "Just hurry, this station won't stay up much longer."
"Copy that." 274 said curtly.
1 and 5 clicked of their communicator and waited. []---------[]
Alden flew toward the holding area. He knew 274 and 30C would be there to try to rescue their fellow operatives. He would get there before they did and would personally welcome them aboard the Nerd Star. His fists clenched in anticipation.
Deck by deck he went until, finally, he reached his destination. He slowly peeked around a corner. 'Looks like they managed to get here first.' He thought as he saw 274 and 30C freeing 1 and 5. 'No matter.' He thought. 'At least they're not yet gone.'
He suddenly whirled around the corner and fired his gloves at the KND operatives. They flew back, shouting in surprise. Alden smiled savagely. "So, you think you've won, huh? This is far from over!"
"Hah!" 5 said. "Your station's going down, boy. Numbah 5 thinks you should give it up."
"It may be going down, but I'll make sure you go down with it!"
He pointed his gloves at the operatives. 274 raised his weapon and fired at him. But Alden just projected a shield from his right glove, blocking the weapon's shots.
"My turn." Alden sneered. He kept blocking 274's shots with his right glove while he pointed the left glove at 274. He grabbed 274's gun with a force field projection from his left glove and crushed it.
"How the heck is he doing that?" 30C wondered.
Alden smiled. "I have something any Jedi-wannabe would kill to have, Force Field Generator Gloves. They allowed me to do everything I just did. They also allow me to do this!"
Alden used the right glove to push them up against a wall. Using the left glove, he took a few supporting girders from the roof and used them to pin the helpless operatives against the wall.
"Hey. What're you doing?" 30C demanded.
"I'm pinning you to the wall so you can go down with this station." Alden said plainly.
"But you'll kill us!" 1 said.
Alden shook his head. "I won't kill you, the heat of reentry will."
