Epilogue

When the missiles from 274's SHARC struck the Nerd Star it not only brought the craft down, it also deactivated the Nerd Star's Core Computer. Two things had resulted from that: First, all the automated Nerd robots completely shut down. Finding their robotic captors deactivated, some KND operatives managed to get free and freed other operatives as well. The freed operatives then started to organize themselves.
Secondly, the Nerds' control over the KND computer and communications network ceased. The KND had full control of their communications again, which greatly aided their reorganization. They managed to contact Numbahs 2, 3, and 4 in the Antarctic base and sent a transport craft to pick them and their prisoners up.
As for 1, 5, 30C, 274, and Alden, a struggled occurred in their shared escape pod after it had detached from the Nerd Star. Of course, Alden had been subdued by the four operatives. The pod continued on to Earth and landed somewhere in the Sahara. Luckily, 274 managed to contact a KND desert operative. A KND craft picked them up shortly after that and flew them to KND Head Quarters.
After the KND organization finished reorganizing themselves and rebuilding their bases, all high-ranking operatives convened to decide on the fate of their Nerd prisoners. The argument over the Nerds' punishment ensued for a week until 274 and several head operatives finally put forward their judgment and put a firm end to the deliberation.

Holding Quarters, KND HQ

274 opened the door to one of the holding cells. Inside was the leader of the Nerds: Alden Savant, formerly Numbah 51. Alden looked up at 274.
"Well," Alden asked. "What's our punishment?"
It wasn't said with defiance, rather, it was said in a soft tone of acceptance. After their capture, the Nerds had found themselves with a lot of time to look back on their actions and deliberate on them. They, especially Alden and Klaus, regretted their actions when they had thought them through.
"Whatever it is, I deserve it." Alden said with a defeated tone, a sad and regretful look on his face. "I can't believe I did what I did, I can't believed I forced others to do what I forced them to do."
274 just kept silent. Alden looked at him. "Whatever form of punishment you choose to give me, I accept it. Just, please, leave my brother out of it. I beg you."
Alden's voice started to rise in panic. "He didn't know what he was doing, I swear! I coaxed him into doing it! It's all my fault, mine!"
"Don't worry," 274 finally said. "There'll be no punishment for your brother, there'll be no punishment for any of you."
"Huh?" Alden asked, surprised.
274 sighed. "The fault for what you did doesn't lie only with you or your teammates." 274 said. "We had a hand in that too. We in the KND severely mistreated you, your brother, your friends, and others like them. We shamefully admit to that. We drove you to do what you did."
"But that doesn't excuse our actions, MY actions." Alden said bitterly. "What I made my team do could've killed you. I WANTED to kill you."
"Me and the others forgive you for that." 274 said. "I only hope you can forgive the KND for what was done in the past."
Alden didn't reply to that. An awkward silence followed before he finally said: "So, will we be decommissioned? Officially, I mean."
274 shook his head. "No, your team's gadgets were pretty amazing and they might prove useful to the KND in the future. If you like, we can re- commission you, your brother, and your friends. We promise to try to treat people like you better---"
"No." Alden said, interrupting 274. "As long as kids will be kids, me and my brother can never be accepted nor respected. I don't know about the others, but, as for me and my brother, we quit."
274 looked at Alden. "I'll let you talk to your team and you can decide amongst yourselves."

Later...

"Allan!" Alden said joyously.
"A-den!" Allan greeted with equal enthusiasm. After a week of being separated from each other that wasn't a surprise. Allan ran to his older brother and gave him a big hug. Alden hugged him back.
"Great to see you, Little Bro."
"How about us?" a British accented female voice asked. Alden looked up, it was Jane, Maria, and Klaus. "Don't we get a hug as well?"
Alden just smiled in amusement. "Hey guys, great to see you too. How have you been for the past week?"
The others' smiles faltered. "Ve've had a lot of time to think about vat ve did." Klaus said. "A lot of time."
"Yeah..." Alden said, smile gone. "Me too."
An awkward silence passed and stretched on for a long while.
"You guys shouldn't blame yourselves." Alden finally said. "I was the leader, I forced you guys to do what you did."
"No." Jane said seriously. "Don't say that. We all have equal blame. We followed you willingly, Alden. You did not force any of us to do anything."
"Ja," Klaus said in agreement. "You did not force me to scheriously hurt Numbah 4. I did that meinself."
"But still, I made you build all those weapons and robots." Alden said. "I convinced you to betray the KND in the first place. And I... I..."
Alden faltered and looked down, a look of guilt and shame on his face. "I almost killed four operatives myself."
"A-a-den?" Allan asked, seeing the look on his brother's face.
"What's done is done." Maria said, speaking for the first time. "We made mistakes, serious mistakes. But using this freedom given to us to blame ourselves won't make our wrongs right. Instead, we should consider this freedom as another chance to use our knowledge, this time not for revenge but for the greater good. To right our wrongs."
Alden smiled slowly and sadly. "And you guys can still do that. 274 offered us the chance to rejoin the KND. Me and Allan aren't joining, we will probably never be fully accepted by our peers, but you guys can still-- -"
"No." Jane said, shaking her head. "We'll stay with you, Alden. We're a team. If you're not rejoining, we're not going to either."
"I can't ask you guys to give up your chance of redeeming yourselves." Alden said. "I just can't, you guys deserve this chance."
"And who says you're not equally deserving?" a voice asked from behind Alden. The Nerds, save Allan, all turned in the direction the voice came from. It was 274.
"I thought it over." 274 said. "You're probably right, Alden. As long as kids will be kids, people like you, I'm sorry to say, will probably never be accepted."
274 continued: "But that doesn't mean you have to leave the Kids Next Door."
"What do you mean?" Alden asked, baffled.
"The KND, on my urging, have decided to form a new unit within the KND." 274 said. "The Nerds unit, a unit for you and other like yourselves who aren't fully accepted but have valuable contributions to the KND. You and many others like you are brilliant, and we feel that that kind of wisdom and knowledge could really be useful to the KND."
274 looked right at Alden. "We've decided to make you the leader of this new unit, Alden. That is, of course, if you accept your old commission back."
Alden was silent, he didn't know what to say. He didn't know whether to accept or decline. He looked to the others. First Jane, then Klaus, then Maria. One by one they nodded in consent. Alden turned back to face 274.
"Okay, 274, we'll do it." He said.
274 smiled. "Then, I give you back your KND commission as Numbah 51. I also officially give you command of the Kids Next Door Nerds Unit."
274 took out five badges from his pocket and tossed them to Alden. Alden caught them and looked at 274. "What're these?"
"The official badges of your new unit." 274 said. "Give the other badges to your teammates."
Alden gave a badge to each of the members of his team. He gave Allan his badge, the boy looked at it uncomprehendingly. Before keeping his own badge, Alden studied it. It was a circle with the symbol of the KND on it, overlapping the KND symbol was a large "N".
"You know," Alden finally said. "This would have saved all of us a lot of grief if this had been done a long time ago."
"Yeah." 274 said. "It definitely would have."
