Hello everyone. Due to popular demand, I have posted a sequel to Hector's
Little Friend. Notice that on my soupfiction.net account it is the second
chapter, but only because it's easier there. *grin* Enjoy!

Hector woke up to the sunlight poring through his makeshift shelter. Ever since the Jaffy incident, he had fled from Laney Park and sought shelter elsewhere. Even though Jaffy was gone, he still had Brownie, his faithful kitten. He had found a cardboard box to sleep in for the night, but Brownie had preferred to sleep on top of the box and, considering that it was a rather old box, had sunken under the kitten's weight over the night, causing her to eventually fall onto Hector, which had awakened him.
"G'mornin'." He said lazily to his kitten. She mewed in response. He smiled and tickled her under the chin while she closed her eyes in contentment. She was the reason he had not given up on living . . .

Zero woke up and looked around, looking for what had caused him to stir. Squid had let out a loud snort. Zero lay back on his cot and sighed, remembering his dream. Before he had been arrested, he had left Brownie in the alleyway behind the Payless. Tears came to his eyes when he thought of how Brownie was subsisting. He pictured her alone, shivering and meowing for Hector to come back. A tear rolled down his cheek.
The morning trumpet sounded, causing Zero to jump. He climbed out of bed and went through the hell he was stuck in for the next sixteen to seventeen months. The hot sun struck the back of his neck like a blazing wind. He cursed the sun for making his work even more difficult with its cursed rays breathing down his neck. He felt as if he was baking to death, but thankfully he only had two feet to go. He quickly dug it up and climbed out of his hole, thankful for his talent of digging fast.
He walked along towards the camp, slightly dragging his feet in his exhaustion. He stopped, however, when he saw a small figure out of the corner of his eye. He looked and saw that it was . . . something crawling in the distance. He blinked and squinted. It didn't look like a snake or lizard. What could it be? He mustered up his courage and began to walk towards the thing, his shovel gripped firmly in his hand. As he approached it, the shovel dropped from his hand and he gasped.
"M . . . mew . . . "The cat gave a feeble meow. He looked at it, and stopped himself from thinking of what was nagging at the back of his mind.
It couldn't be. He knelt down beside the cat and gently put his hand on her to see how she was breathing. Very shallow.
"What's up, Zero-man?" An accented voice said behind him. He jumped and turned around to see Magnet. He breathed a sigh of relief. Magnet should be good with animals—he had confessed two days earlier during their meetings with Pendanski that he would like to be a veterinarian.
"It's hurt." Zero said, moving aside a little so that Magnet could see the cat. Magnet's eyes widened.
"Maldito." He said in a hushed voice. He knelt down in front of the cat and gently lifted her into his arms. She gave a faint meow and looked directly at Zero. He knew those eyes.
It was Brownie, Zero's beloved pet kitten that he had left behind. She had somehow followed him.
