Chapter 3- A typical day

Lucy was sitting on the couch with Jake reading The Cat in the Hat when Kevin called to say that he would be home early. She was surprised; lately he had been calling to say that he would be late. He had been working so hard lately on a specific case, and although he couldn't discuss it with her, Lucy knew that whatever it was, it was getting to him.

At three o'clock, Lucy fastened Jake into his car seat in her SUV, and they drove over to the elementary school to pick up Kallie. When she pulled up to the curb, she was surprised to see her mother's van in front of her. Annie got out and came over.

"Hi Luce, Hi Jake!" Annie greeted them happily, leaning in the passenger side window.

"Hi Mom, what are you doing here?" Lucy asked.

Annie smiled. "I'm picking Charlie and Jenna up for Matt and Sarah. They both had to work late, and I volunteered to baby sit." She explained brightly. "How are you doing Lucy?"

"I'm fine." Lucy said. "Just a bit tired. You know how it is at six months."

Annie grinned. "I should say so, with seven children!"

"Grandma, Grandma!" Three voices shouted from behind her. Lucy and Annie looked back and saw Charlie, Jenna and Kallie running toward them, Cecilia not too far behind them. Annie gave all three of them big hugs.

"How was school?" Lucy asked her daughter when she climbed onto the backseat next to her brother.

"It was fun. We made snowflakes to decorate the classroom with. I made one for you mommy. Want to see?" The little girl gushed. Lucy was so happy that her daughter liked kindergarten.

"It's beautiful, sweetheart. We'll put it on the refrigerator when we get home, okay?" Lucy told her.

Cecilia greeted everyone. Lucy remembered something. "Are we still on for this weekend?" They were planning to go shopping on Saturday for maternity and baby stuff.

"Yep." Cecilia said. "I am so excited. I have always loved looking for baby stuff, and now, I get to by it for myself!"

"Well, we have to get going." Lucy said. "Kevin said that he was coming home early. I'll pick you up tomorrow at ten o'clock, okay?" Cecilia nodded. "See you then! Bye!" Lucy started the car and left the parking lot.

"We'd better get going too." Annie said, ushering the Charlie and Jenna into the backseat of her van. "I have freshly baked cookies waiting!"

"Yay!" The kids cheered from the backseat.

"Okay, see you Annie!" Cecilia waved. "Bye guys!"

"Bye Aunt Cecilia!" she heard from the backseat.

When Lucy pulled into the driveway, she saw Kevin's car was already there. Kallie jumped out of the car and ran into the house. Lucy freed Jake from his car seat, and he too ran through the side door of their home, followed by Lucy. Kevin was sitting on the couch in the living room with Jake on his lap, Kallie bombarding him with all the news from kindergarten. Lucy smiled at him, and sat down on the other side of their daughter.

"Daddy, do you want to see my snowflakes?" The bubbly five year old asked. "I made one for you and Mommy and Jake and me!" She crawled off the couch and ran into the hall where she had dropped her backpack.

"What snowflakes?" Kevin asked his wife as she scooted over to him.

Lucy put her head on his chest, and he put his arm around her. "You know, white paper that you fold and cut holes in? She learned how in class today." She said with a yawn. Lucy closed her eyes. She was so tired.

Kevin set Jake on the floor, and gently got up from the couch. Lucy was already asleep, so he took the afghan off the arm of the couch and covered her with it. Taking Jake's hand, they went into the play room and found Kallie already there, a stack of construction paper on the table in front of her. She was concentrating so hard to make all the snips perfect.

He sat down on a chair near her. She giggled as she held up her handiwork. "That's beautiful honey." He praised. "Can you show me how to make one?"

Jake was over in the corner of the room, playing with his trucks. He crashed them together, making loud, banging noises. "Jake, Mommy is sleeping. Can you play nicer with your trucks?" He asked. The little boy nodded, and soon abandoned the trucks for a plane, which he flew silently around the room.

"Daddy, why is Mommy sleeping?" Kallie inquired. "It's not nighttime."

"When you are having a baby, you get very tired." Kevin explained. "Sometimes you need to take a nap, like when you were little."

"But Mommy isn't little, she is a grown up."

"I know, but the baby is little, and when the baby gets tired, Mommy gets tired, too." Kevin was trying to explain this to her, but he doubted that he was doing a good job. He was grateful when she nodded and went back to cutting shapes out of the paper.

Jake was rooting noisily through his toy chest. "Jake, what are you looking for?" Kevin asked his son. Jake didn't answer, and kept searching. After a while, he gave up and sat at the table, coloring in his coloring book.

Kevin snuck out of the room, his children not noticing his departure. He silently moved down the hall and peeked into the living room. Lucy was still sleeping peacefully on the couch. He walked quietly into his office and closed the door partway. Sitting at his desk, he started to review some of the paperwork he had brought home.

An Hour Later...

"Daddy?" Kevin looked up from his reports at his children who were both standing at the door. "We're hungry. When is dinner?"

Kevin looked at his watch. It was nearly six. "Okay, how about we get pizza?"

"Really?"

"Really. What do you guys want?" He asked.

Kallie thought for a moment. "I want extra cheese." Jake nodded in agreement.

"Okay. I'll order as soon as I find out what Mommy wants, alright?" They nodded and ran back down the hall.

Kevin walked into the living room. Sitting on the edge of the couch, he gently shook Lucy. She opened her eyes. "How long was I out?" She asked him, sitting up.

"Not long, just two hours or so." Kevin told her. "I'm going to order pizza, what do you want?"

"I don't care, anything is fine." Lucy replied. "Where are the kids?"

"In the playroom. Should I take them with me?

"Only if they want to go."

"Alright." Kevin leaned over and kissed her. "I love you."

"I love you too." Lucy smiled.

Twenty minutes later, Kallie and Kevin were in the car headed to Pete's pizza. She was singing some song she had learned at school earlier in the week. Kevin parked, and they walked across the street and into the pizza parlor. "I have two pies under the name Kinkirk." He told the girl behind the counter.

"Hey, Kinkirk!" Someone called. Kevin turned around and saw Roxanne, his former partner walking up to him. She was holding hands with a guy that he knew was a cop, but he couldn't remember his name.

"Hey Roxanne! Long time, no see!" He greeted her, giving her a hug.

"Hi sweetie!" Roxanne bent down to hug Kallie. "You have gotten so big, I barely recognized you!"

Kallie smiled. "I'm five now. The last time you saw me, I was only four." She held up four fingers to illustrate that fact.

"So how have you been?" Kevin asked. It was weird talking to her. When they both go reassigned new partners, they stopped seeing each other at work, and Lucy had stopped having pizza night with Roxanne about a year ago.

"Not too bad. Oh, do you know Mark?" She indicated to the guy who was standing next to her.

"Nope." Kevin stuck out his hand. "Hi, I'm Kevin, I used to be Roxanne's partner, and this is my daughter, Kallie."

Mark shook his hand. "I'm Mark. I work at the station too."

The girl behind the counter handed Kevin their pizzas. "Well, I guess that we'll be going now. It was nice to see you, Roxanne."

"Nice to see you, too, Kinkirk. Roxanne replied. "Tell Lucy and Jake I said hello."

"Of course." He said, as he took his daughter's hand and walked out of Pete's. They crossed the street, and got into the car. They drove down the familiar streets, Kallie pointing out all the houses of friends and family as they passed.

When they got back home, Jake was putting the plates on the table, and Lucy was filling glasses with ice. She pulled a bottle of soda out of the refrigerator and filled three of the glasses with it. In the fourth, she poured water. Kevin placed the pizza in the middle of the table, and put slices on each of the plates.

A few minutes later, they sat down to eat. After finishing her slice, Kallie said, "Mommy, guess who we saw at Pete's!"

Lucy looked at Kevin and Kallie. "Who did you see at Pete's?" She asked, setting her slice of pizza onto the plate.

"Roxanne!" Her daughter exclaimed.

"Aww, I miss her." Lucy said. "I haven't seen her in a long time."

"Not since I was four." Kallie said, again holding up four fingers for emphasis.

Lucy smiled. "You're right. We should invite her over for dinner or something."

They finished eating, keeping up a lively conversation about the days events. The kids were in the playroom watching a video while Lucy did the dishes and Kevin was in his office. When she was finished, she picked up the living room. At eight thirty, she called for the kids to go and put their pajamas on and brush their teeth. By nine o'clock they were in bed, and Kevin was sitting on the couch in the den watching the news. She collapsed onto the couch next to him, and started watching with him.

At eleven, Lucy started up the stairs while Kevin locked the doors. She was already asleep by the time he got in bed next to her. Kevin kissed her cheek and wrapped his arms around her, his hand resting on her stomach. Within a few minutes he was asleep, and the house was quiet.
