Chapter 4- Surprises While Shopping
Cecilia woke up on Saturday morning at eight thirty. Simon was still asleep next to her, so she got up quietly, trying hard not to wake him. She silently went into the bathroom, shutting the door quietly.
She was already showered and dressed by the time that Simon opened his eyes. "Good morning, sleepyhead." She greeted him with a peck on the cheek.
Simon rolled over and sat up. "What time is it?" He asked her, rubbing his eyes.
"Almost ten." She answered, putting earrings on.
"Are you and Lucy still going shopping today?" Simon asked her, slipping his slippers on his feet.
"Mmhmm. She should be here any minute." Cecilia swept some eye shadow onto her lids. "We were going to go to the mall, and then out to lunch. I should be home in a few hours, around three or so."
"No problem." Simon told her. He gave her a quick kiss and disappeared into the bathroom.

Things were not so calm at Lucy's house. They had all gotten up late, and were trying to eat a quick breakfast before Kevin took the kids to the zoo, and Lucy left to go shopping with Cecilia. Kallie was crying because she had spilled orange juice on her dress, and Jake refused to wear anything but his Spiderman pajamas.
"Kallie come here!" Lucy called from the laundry room. She had been sorting through the clean clothes pile trying to find the pink dress that was exactly like the blue one Kallie had spilled juice on. "Here, honey. I found this dress for you, alright? It is exactly the same as the blue one, and it looks just as pretty."
Kallie smiled and put on the dress. "Now, don't spill anything on this one, okay?" Lucy gave her a kiss on the cheek and Kallie ran out of the room. One crisis averted, Lucy sighed. "Jake, you cannot wear pajamas to the zoo. You can wear your red tee shirt and blue jeans, and you can still look like Spiderman. Do we have a deal?" She asked the three year old. He nodded, and she handed Kevin the outfit. "I have to go, I'm already late."
She kissed the kids foreheads, and leaned over and gave Kevin a long kiss goodbye. "Eww!" They heard, and turned around to see Kallie and Jake sitting across from them with their hands over their eyes. They laughed. "I love you," Kevin said.
Lucy smiled. "I love you too." She blew them all kisses and hurried out the door.

Mary sat in the doctor's office, very nervous. Her test had come back negative, but she had missed her period for the last three months. She had to be pregnant, there was no other explanation.
The door opened and her doctor came back in. "So?" She asked him.
He sat down across from her. "I'm sorry, Mary, but you aren't pregnant."
"I don't understand. I haven't had a period in three months, what else could it be?" She asked him, very confused.
"Mary, I'm going to have to do more tests to be conclusive, but I think that you are going through menopause." He answered.
The word hit her with the force of a truck. "That is impossible." She stated, her voice wavering. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. "I'm only thirty, how can that be?"
"Well, Mary, it is rare, but quite possible." He informed her. "We will need to do some more tests to be sure, so you will need to make another appointment with the receptionist. I am very sorry."
Mary left the office building, and sat in her car. She couldn't believe what she had just heard. She drove home, and as she pulled into the parking lot of the apartment building, the reality of the situation hit her. Her eyes filled with tears, and she began to sob.

"What do you think of this?" Lucy asked Cecilia, holding up a vee necked black shirt.
"Cute." Cecilia answered, going back to searching for her size in another top. They were in their third store, and they each had already bought a great deal. "You know, Luce, this is fun. I'm glad you invited me."
Lucy smiled at her sister in law. "It is isn't it? I never got to go shopping for all of this stuff with anyone with Kallie or Jake. I'm really glad that you and Simon are having a baby so close in age to this baby." She explained, placing a hand on her stomach.
Cecilia moved to another rounder, and started to sift through it, when something caught her eye. Or rather, someone. "Abby!" She exclaimed, when she noticed her friend. Lucy turned around too, and saw Abigayle Hampton, Chandler's wife, standing a few racks away, looking embarrassed.
"What are you doing here Abby?" Cecilia asked her, as Abby walked over. She and Abby had met in college, when they had some classes together. She had married Chandler in August. Suddenly she realized. "Abby, are you- ?" She asked.
Abby smiled awkwardly. "Yeah, I am. I'm due in July." She confided in them. "We have been trying to keep it quiet for a little while, you know how people are." She and Chandler were already gossiped about relentlessly, mainly because while Chandler was the Associate Pastor at the Glen Oak Community Church, which was Protestant, she herself was still a practicing Roman Catholic. She didn't go to his church, and went to St. Luke's, a Catholic church in another part of town.
"Congratulations!" The girls cried, embracing her.
"Why don't you come with us?" Lucy suggested. "We were planning on hitting a few more stores, and then going to lunch."
Abby smiled. "That would be nice. Thank you for inviting me." They all went back to looking around the store, occasionally holding something up to get the other's opinion on time to time. After going into two more stores, they left the mall, the cars loaded with bags, and headed to a café in the promenade.
While they were at lunch, Cecilia and Abby asked Lucy a lot of questions about labor, delivery and parenting. Lucy didn't really want to answer many of the questions, so she gave them very vague answers, and soon they gave up, sensing that they weren't going to be told how painful it was.
After they ate, Cecilia and Lucy bid farewell to Abby, who got into her own car, and drove home, Cecilia told Lucy about Simon's idea for their parents Christmas gift. Lucy was a bit surprised at first, but after she thought about it, she agreed with Simon. "We all grew up thinking about that, especially when Dad had his double bypass and started to act weird. I will talk to Kevin about it tonight and call you guys later. Cecilia nodded. They pulled into her driveway, and she grabbed her numerous bags. Lucy waved as she backed out of the drive, and went a few more blocks to her parents' home.
She let herself in through the back door. Annie was transferring gooey chocolate chip cookies from the baking pan to a cooling rack. "Lucy!" She exclaimed when she saw her daughter come in the door. "What brings you here?" She gave her a hug.
"I was out shopping with Cecilia, and I just decided to drop by." Lucy explained, taking a cookie and sitting down at the table. Annie sat down across from her. "I found something out today, and I wanted to tell you, but you can't say anything, even though it will come out eventually."
Annie nodded, and leaned in closer. "What is it?" She asked.
"Abby and Chandler are going to have a baby!" Lucy announced. This was very exciting news, and she had to tell someone.
Annie looked at her, surprised. "How do you know?" She asked. Annie hated to spread gossip, and didn't want to be responsible for letting any rumors spread about such a nice couple.
"Cecilia and I were in a store and Abby walked in, and she told us." Lucy said.
"I guess that it is true then," Annie smiled. "I was a little worried that it was a rumor, but I am very happy for them. They must be so excited." She wondered about what the other members of the church were going to say when they found out. This was big news, and would probably be relentless in discussing it. Annie remembered what it was like when she was first married to Eric and pregnant with Matt.
"Yeah, I wonder what the community is going to have to say about it though." Lucy commented. "They always talked about all of us when we were growing up, and we didn't have the added pressure of having parents who didn't go to the same church. You know that everyone is going to want to know whether this baby is going to be Catholic or Protestant."
Annie nodded. "That will definitely be a topic of discussion over the next few months." She and Lucy talked about other things for another hour, when Lucy stood up to leave.
"I have to go, Mom." Lucy said. "I need to go and rescue Kevin from Kallie and Jake. He took them to the zoo today. I only hope that they decided to give him a break and behave today." She said, remembering the last time they went to the zoo, and Kallie had wandered off and they spent twenty minutes looking for her before they found her by the penguins.
Annie walked her to the door. "Are you guy's still coming to brunch tomorrow after church?"
"Of course." Lucy answered. "See you tomorrow, Mom. Bye."

Sarah was sitting in their living room, reading a book when Matt came home. She smiled, and got up from the couch and kissed him.
"Welcome home." She said, before kissing him again.
"Where are the kids?" He asked her.
"Charlie is sleeping over at the Anderson's, and Jenna is at Lucy and Kevin's playing with Kallie. She is staying with them overnight, and we'll pick her up at your parents when we go to brunch."
Matt smiled. "So we have the house all to ourselves then." Sarah nodded.
He took her hand, and they both went upstairs.
~*~*~
Chandler was at home when Abby came in. "Hi, sweetie," He said, before pulling her into his arms and kissing her passionately. "I missed you."
Abby smiled. "I missed you too. I have to tell you something."
"You can tell me anything, honey, you know that."
"I ran into Lucy Kinkirk and Cecilia Camden when I was shopping today, and I told them about the baby." Abby told her husband.
"Well, I did say that we would tell people when you were ready." Chandler said. She had been the one who wanted to keep the baby under wraps, so he was happy that she wanted to tell people.
"So you aren't mad?" She asked. She had been worried about letting it slip all afternoon.
"I couldn't care less. I just wanted you to be happy."
She kissed him. "I am happy. I love you so much."
"I love you too."

Mary was laying on her bed when Jason came home from work. She didn't know what to say. She couldn't find the words to tell him, or anyone else, that she would never have more children. Why? She asked God, with tears flowing down her cheeks. Why have you done this to me?
