Chapter 6- Bedtime Stories

After dinner, Lucy put a movie on in the playroom for Kallie, Jake and Jenna. As they sang along to the cartoon video, she read a book in the living room, and Kevin had shut himself in his office going over some papers he had brought home from work the day before.

At eight thirty, the movie ended, and Lucy closed her book and walked down the hall. Jake was already asleep on the floor, and the girls were looking very tired. Picking her son up, she instructed the girls to go upstairs and brush their teeth.

Jake didn't stir as she carried him up the stairs and slipped him under the covers. Lucy kissed his forehead and turned out the lights before leaving the room.

She heard splashes and giggles coming from the bathroom, and she knew the girls were still brushing their teeth. A few seconds later, they ran across the hall to Kallie's bedroom, followed by Lucy.

Lucy sat on the edge of the bed as the girls snuggled under the covers. "Mommy, will you tell us a story?" Kallie asked.

"Of course. What do you want to hear?"

"Tell us the story of how you and Daddy met!" Kallie suggested enthusiastically.

"Well, it all started a long time ago. I was going on a trip to Buffalo with your Aunt Mary, and we had to take a plane to get there." Lucy began the story.

"But you hate to fly Aunt Lucy, my Daddy told me so." Jenna said.

"That's right, I do hate to fly, but I had to get on a plane anyway. When we got to Buffalo, my bag was missing, and I was upset. I left my other bag with Aunt Mary so I could go and see if the airline had found it yet, and when I returned, Aunt Mary was gone, and so was my bag! I was very mad when Aunt Mary came back, and she didn't have my bag with her."

"What did you do?"

"I asked a security guard if he knew what had happened to my things, and he told me that he had given it to the police, and it was going to be destroyed. I started to yell at the guard, and he took me into custody, because you can not yell at security guards, whether they are in the mall, or in an airport."

"Because it isn't very nice to yell at people, right, Mommy?" Kallie said.

Lucy smiled. "That's right, it isn't. I was still very angry when a police officer came into the room that we were in. I turned around and saw your daddy for the first time! He was very nice, and he had saved my bag! He took me out to dinner, and we have been together ever since."

Lucy pulled the covers up to their chins. "Sweet dreams." She kissed them good night, and started to get up, when Kallie put her hand on her arm. Lucy looked down at her very sleepy daughter.

"Mommy? Will I find someone like you found Daddy?" She asked, her eyelids drooping as she spoke.

"Someday you will find a nice man who will love you, and you will love him. It will happen when you least expect it, and when it does, you never let it go." Lucy told her, brushing her blonde hair off her forehead. "Now go to sleep. I love you."

Lucy eased off the bed, not wanting to disturb the two sleeping little girls, and tiptoed out the door. Kevin was standing just outside, leaning against the wall. She closed the door, and smiled at her husband. "Were you listening?" She asked him.

"Of course I was." He told her, putting his arms around her. "I love hearing you tell stories about us." He kissed her. When they pulled away, he was laughing softly.

"What's so funny?" She asked.

He smiled. "I was just remembering you calling yourself a terrorist."

Lucy rolled her eyes. "Oh, shut up!"

"Not a bad idea." Kevin leaned over and kissed her passionately.

Mary walked out of the house, and turned around to face him. "Thank you so much for talking to me. I needed to talk to someone, but I'm not ready to talk to anyone in my family yet."

"Mary, I'm always here for you, never forget that,"

She smiled at him. "I know."

They hugged, and she went back down the steps to her car. Giving one final wave, she headed back to the apartment to get some rest, and would be home in Glen Oak by tomorrow afternoon.
