Meanwhile, Legolas was having a hard time getting Borin to talk. He was such a quiet elf that had his own prides and fears. Legolas practically had to scream everything he said, just to get Borin to actually look at him.

"Why is it you want to leave us! If you tell me then your wish will be granted! Juts tell me!" For a moment, Borin just looked straight ahead and pondered Legolas' question. Finally, he spoke a few words. "I have heard enough about you, Legolas, to know that you and your friends don't need me and that you and I will always be on bad terms."

"What do you say?" interrogated Legolas sharply. "I say that you and I are too alike. I know your skill. And I know my temper and determination. I always strive to be the best. I can't help myself, but I always need the spotlight on me. I need to be the best to feel confident in myself. Don's ask.....You can find some Men in Lorien." He wavered. "Plus, you and I love the same woman. Lady Arwen is such a beautiful elf that deserves better than me, but I still love her so!"

Legolas reared his horse and said in a menacing tone, "I love no woman. You lie." It was actually the other way around. He did love a woman elf and Borin wasn't lying. But Borin took no notice of what Legolas said. "I am not ready for a Ranger's life. I don't want that life!!" His eyes were shining will tears and anger. He quieted again. "I will miss my old life and family. Maybe Lady Galadriel can cure this problem I have....." Legolas did give this point to Borin. Borin was a young elf, about half the age of Legolas, and Legolas was thought to be a younger elf. And now that Legolas thought of it, he and Gimli were living Ranger's lives. Legolas hardly knew his father anymore.

Legolas decided to change his attitude. "Come," he said softly. "I do not care if you are better at.....shooting or riding or anything! We might love the same woman, but you are right. She would never choose either of us for lovers. She deserves better. Royalty. We have no time to think of her anyways! And you might see your family, or possibly Lady Galadriel on our new adventure. I will end up going to every corner of Middle-Earth, and you will see more than your eyes will ever see again. Thought the ride is dangerous, you will love the feeling of victory over one of the most evil wizards around!" This seemed to change Borin's attitude too. He sighed and turned his horse around. He didn't say a word as he and Legolas rode together silently back to Rivendell.
