Legolas stood in front of Lady Arwen's door, wondering if he should even
say good-bye, wondering if she would even care. He decided that he had
better just wait until tomorrow, when the whole village of Rivendell would
say their good-byes, and each warrior would get a special one from Lord
Elrond and Arwen. "What's the use," Legolas muttered, and he turned around.
They weren't right for each other anyways. He took three steps away from
the door and reached the first step of the winding stairway. When the door
to her room was out of sight, but still in hearing range, Legolas thought
that he heard a soft 'good-bye' in the wind. He turned around and saw
Arwen's long black hair fleeting 'round the corner. His heart rose and he
skipped down the stairs.
Gimli put down his tankard and burped rather loudly. He smacked his lips together a few times and then licked them. The bartender at the local pub waited for Gimli to say, "Give me all you got" again, but Gimli had had enough. Instead, Gimli put out a hand and the bartender slowly took it, looking confused. Gimli stared at his hand for a second because he was slightely drunk and didn't know what to do, and then suddenly shook it hard up and down. The bartender was taken very much by surprise, and he pulled his hand out of Gimli's grip, and grumbled. Gimli stood up and tripped toward the door, swerving around. He stepped outside and realized that the sun was now out of sight, and stars were coming out from hiding again..... "I guess that my last stop will be the West Hill, where I can watch the sun set." And off he walked down the empty road, breathing in the night air.
When Gimli reached the West Hill, he climbed wearily to the top and sat down on the damp grass. He let out a long sigh and let his back fall onto the grass too. Gimli sensed movement on his right, and sat up again. "Who goes there?" He saw the sillhouette of a figure sitting on the grass with his head down. His short hair fell on his face, covering it.
"Ah, Borin. What brings you here?"
The figure raised and turned his head. It was Borin alright. He said nothing and looked back at the grass. "Me too," continued Gimli. "I was just enjoying my last night here also. So many people I will miss again, and you too I am assuming. This Hill is always a peaceful place, though. You will learn that."
"Yes, I already have," said Borin quietly. They sat there in silence for a few minutes, until another tall figure appeared. It gave the two quite a scare, because it had come noiseless.
Legolas sat down in between Borin and Gimli and picked at the grass, then looked up at the stars. "I wonder if we will ever get to do this again. Just look at the stars ever so peacefully at night and contemplate life and the people we love."
"I'm still recovering from that scare you just gave me!" growled Gimli. Legolas laughed and shook Gimli's shoulder. "You are a funny little dwarf....." Gimli cursed under his breathe. Then there was silence. Everyone lay back on the grass and closed their eyes, remembering good times.
"Well, it is getting late and you three should get some rest now," said a familiar voice at the foot of the Hill. Gimli gave a shout and sat straight up. "Aragorn! That is the second time tonight that I have almost had a heart attack!" Aragorn gave a faint smile and said, "It is late-almost eleven.....you should be getting some sleep. I have one more thing to do."
Legolas stood up and brushed the dirt off his clothes. "I guess so," he sighed. He bid the rest good-night, but the others followed him anyways. As Borin was about to dissappear around the corner he said, "What about you? Aren't you coming?"
"I already told you that I have something to do. Now be off." Borin nodded and ran after the others. Aragorn waited for the sound of footsteps to dissappear and then slowly walked up the Hill. Then he followed the footsteps of the others, but his destination was different.
