Meryl watched the townspeople with a half smile grazing her face. She was happy for their and Milly's good fortune but she missed Vash. She felt a hand on shoulder and looked up to see Milly standing there with an understanding smile. "He'll come back Meryl, you'll see." Meryl turned back around and as if Milly's words had been an omen she saw a figure through the haze, a figure that seemed to be carrying something.
Hardly able to hope, Meryl ran out past the edge of the town until she met the shape. Sure enough, it was the infamous Vash the Stampede $$60 million man and his brother Knives. Without a word she shouldered a part of his burden and they walked slowly towards the town n silence.
"Welcome back Mr. Vash." Squealed the ever excitable Milly. She waved her hands back and forth at the three beings; 2 plant, and 1 human; never thinking of coming to help.
Meryl and Vash walked through the town to where the house she and Milly had rented, while waiting for Vash to return. They entered the small house an Meryl led Vash into an unoccupied room, where Vash lay down the unconscious form of Knives down. All this had been done in complete silence and only when Vash grunted as he put Knives down was the silence broken.
Meryl looked at Vash, shy at first until she heard the laughter coming from outside, then suddenly smiled at him, surprising them both although he covered it well. "You should come back outside with me," she added as she saw him hesitate, "at least to get some donuts." He gave a nod and they walked out, chatting lightly until Vash saw Milly.
Vash came to a halt as he saw Milly. "What have you been eating girl?" He asked, amazed at the sight of her. At this question she blushed slightly and said, "Nothing unhealthy," to answer the unasked question she added, "Mr. Wolfwood gave me a present before he left." Vash smiled understandingly before he left to buy his donuts. As Meryl gazed after him, Milly said, "Now we can both be happy Meryl." Her voice was filled with an incredible amount of sincerity, unlike what most people would expect from the happy go lucky girl. "Aren't you glad we introduced him to donuts?" (In my story they did introduce him)
Finally the party had worn itself out and Meryl had managed to drag Milly back into their house, with a plate of food for Vash. After Milly went to bed Meryl stayed up thinking over her time following Vash the Stampede and being joined by Wolfwood. She didn't notice that Vash had come in until he put his hand on her shoulder.
"You know what Meryl?" He started softly, "I think everything is going to be okay from now on. Because through it all, my friend, I have you. And when it all comes to an end, I'll expect you to be there with me, cheering me on."
Meryl looked up at him, surprised at his sincerity. in his eyes was something she had never seen before, trust. He leaned down slowly and gently kissed her. Before she could say a word he was gone, along with his plate of food. She smiled, eager for a future with Vash, Milly, the unborn baby, and even Knives.
