Chapter 2
A week passed. Thinking of nothing but well, nothing. Although someone would pop back to his mind once in a while. Landon decided to leave beaufort the following week. Thinking all his life living in this town, after he leaves, he wonders if he¡®s gonna miss it here. Thinking of his screwed life, he wonders if he¡¯s gonna miss it here. Not one thing came into his mind that he¡®s going to miss except for his mother. Not one thing.
Jamie stared at the phone for hours. Today was the day that she was going to leave for Arlington. It was a sad day for her, leaving her father, her friends, her home. That thought was on her mind this morning. That is, before she was finishing up her packing. Looking at the dress she wore for the play. She kept the script for some reason. She placed them both in a box and pushed it into a corner in her closet. Jamie closed the door shut and walked downstairs with a box she was going to take. When she came downstairs, the phone rang. She picked it up to find out it was someone wishing her good luck. "Hey Jamie, this is Landon's mother. How are you?" It was Mrs. Carter. "Hello Mrs. Carter. I'm fine. Are you looking for my father?" She asked in her sweet tone. "Umm, no. I was hoping to speak to you. You're leaving today, right?" "Yeah. I'm kinda nervous." Jamie pretended that she was really looking forward to it. "Well, good luck. You know, Landon's leaving in three weeks." "In three weeks? Ohh. Can you tell Landon.."
"Uh huh. Sure. Bye and keep in touch. Okay, bye." With that, Cynthia Carter placed the receiver in its place. Just then, Landon came in. "Who was that?" He asked as he walked towards the refrigerator. "Oh, Jamie Sullivan. Remember? She's leaving today. She's leaving quite early." Landon stopped in his steps at the name. "She is? Since when?"
The phone seemed like it was about to ring the whole time Jamie stared at it. After the conversation with Mrs. Carter, she just didn't know how she felt. She felt kind of weird inside. She glanced at the clock 1:43. Remembering that she had to meet her dad to go to the airport, she grabbed the keys and the box and went to her car. She locked the doors before coming out. After having one last glance at her house, she drove off.
'She told me to tell you that she's going to miss you.' Landon replayed that line over and over in his head. Was she really going to? Why didn't he know it was today? Why? He was in his living room, elbow on his knees, hands covering his face. Placed in front of him was the wireless black phone. After thinking for a while, he picked it up, dialed numbers and just waited. ' I got to talk to you Jamie, pick up.' It seemed like it was going on forever until something picked up. "Hey," Landon was about to speak but then realized that it was the machine. He hung up and dialed it again. Maybe she's busy, he thought. Still nothing picked up other than the machine. He dialed again but what was the point he thought. Landon hung up and threw the phone across the couch, covering his face with his hands yet again when it rang. Landon looked over to the phone. "Landon, can you get that?" Mrs. Carter's voice was heard and he picked it up, pressed talk and placed it next to his ear. "Hello?" He spoke. There was a pause on the other line but then someone spoke up, "Hey Carter."
Jamie didn't know what she was doing. Why is she here in the first place? She was suppose to be at the church. The church, not here. She looked over at the time in her car, 1:50. In her hand, was her phone. She had nothing to say to the person on the other line. "Hello?" came from the other line. Jamie thought for a second. What should she say?
Finally, the best thing was to say, she thought, was to at least say hi. "Hey Carter." She said. Jamie knew that Landon immediately knew who he was talking to by the sound of his voice. "Uh, Jamie. Hi." Jamie felt like it a century ago since she heard that voice. This feeling inside her seemed like she missed him a little. "So, yeah." She thought, what was she going to say next?
Landon found himself with nothing to say. I mean, he usually has lots to say but somehow, right now, he was in like some kind of pit. He couldn't get the words out. Sitting on his couch, hands getting all sweaty because of the phone, he just sat there. There was a long pause. Very long. Landon thought that Jamie had nothing to say either. "You--" They said at same time. Landon smiled as he heard Jamie laughed on the phone. "Well, you can go first." He told her. "Alright. You know, I'm leaving today.. I was just calling because I'm on my way to the church. I was wondering, you know, how you're doing." Jamie thought about how well this was going. "I'm fine. Good. How bout you? It must be tough. Spending your whole life here. With family here and friends." Landon somehow didn't want her to leave. At least, not yet. "Yeah." He heard her crying a little.
With her other hand, she wiped the tears flowing down on to her lap. Letting the sadness out of herself with the tears, she hoped so. It was too much for her to bear. "Look--" Landon spoke but was interrupted by Jamie. "Um, Landon. I got to--" "Jamie. Hold on for a minute. Don't hang up just yet." Landon spoke before she had the chance to hang up. "Look, you don't have to go to that school. Why don't you just go to somewhere else? Or stay here? Virginia's just--" "Carter! I can't. I have to go to that school. I'm sorry but--" "Why not? And why are you leaving so early? Beaufort's not that bad. With all your friends and family here. I mean." Landon stopped. he realized that he was talking too much. "Landon, how about you? I thought you hated it here. Why are you staying here longer?" She had not stopped her tears yet and didn't bother to wipe them off. "What I was trying to say is. Virginia. You're going to miss everyone here right? Then why go there? Because of the scholarship or something? You said that time, that you weren't even gonna go to college. Remember, that.." Remembering himself, he stopped before he could say anything else. Remembering himself that night, when they started the stopping and stopped everything. "Why do you care anyways? Why?!" Jamie wiped her tears, wetting her arm.
"Why do you care anyways? Why?!" He heard her voice. Right now, he wasn't sitting down on his couch. He had been walking around in the room and walked over to the window near by. "Because, because I'm gonna miss you too. Jamie, I don't know but you changed me somehow. I'm changed." He just recently sat right next to the window by the front door. The curtain was half closed. "No Landon, you changed yourself. Not me." Landon slowly drew the curtain as he told her, "Jamie, being with you changed how i was. Being with you." When he fully drew the curtain, he looked outside and right away, something caught his attention. At that moment she said, "I told you not to fall in love with me." Landon's mind just dropped as he heard the dial tone. Outside, was a car just starting. A station wagon was about to drive away when Landon stood up and headed for the door.
Jamie pressed END on her phone and placed it next to her. She wiped the tears off her face as she reached for the key in the ignition. Once she started it, she hit the gas and she began to move. Landon was climbing down the concrete steps as he saw her drove off. When he reached the bottom, he began to run for his dear life. After going about a block at a fast speed, she looked up at her rear view mirror if she looked okay. Something caught her attention as she looked at the mirror, she reached up and arranged it so that she can see it clearly. On the sidewalk was Landon. Jamie thought about stopping but she just couldn't. He would hold her back. He's like that. She turned away and tried to concentrate on the road. People were staring at Landon who was yelling a name at a car near by. She couldn't see this no more, she turned left, going much faster. Soon, he couldn't keep up and stopped to catch his breathe.
He turned, heading back when he suddenly heard someone yell. Landon had no clue that she was yelling at him but turned around, seeing a girl holding her nose and her head back. "HEY YOU! WHAT THE HECK IS YOUR PROBLEM??!!!!" To Landon, it seemed funny that the girl was yelling at him with her head back and her nose held. He laughed at the thought. "WHAT ARE YOU LAUGHING ABOUT???!!! AREN'T YOU GONNA HELP ME??!!" The girl needed help, not physically but mentally, he thought. He walked over to her slowly. "Why should I do that?" He asked, looking down at the girl. She looked up at him and said, "Hello? You blind or something? I just got knocked out by you. My nose is bleeding and I cannot find my glasses." Landon thought for a moment. He must of knocked her out when he was running. Somehow, he had forgotten about Jamie when he met the girl. It was pretty funny. She looked like his age, but shorter my inches. It looked as if she had been running for hours. She wore a T-shirt and sweat pants. Her black hair was tied in a ponytail and it was very messy. To him, she wasn't attractive at all.
"HELLO?! Your deaf too??!!" The girl seemed really impatient. Who wouldn't be in her position? "Oh, sorry." He held up her head for her. "My glasses?" Then he quickly looked around. He didn't see anything except the things that are suppose to be there, excluding the glasses. Suddenly realizing that what he was standing on wasn't garbage, he picked up the broken glasses he was stepping on. "Umm, why don't you come over to my house? You can clean up there and we can do something about your glasses." He said as he placed the glasses in his pocket. "What?! What did you do with my glasses?" "Calm down. Geez, would you like everyone staring at you like this? Let's just go to my house and--" "How would I know it's safe? You're not like a criminal are you? You are a complete stranger. How will I trust you?" "You know, you talk to much for a stranger. Anyways, I'm going to go since you don't want my help. I thought you wanted it. It's your loss." Then he walked away. The girl stood there, she just stood there.
Few minutes later of walking, the girl came up next to him. "Fine." She said. Landon sighed and held her head for her. They walked two blocks to reach his house.

Who can the girl be? You can guess if she is going to be in the later chapters or not. Reviews please.
