Memories of Corps
Memory I :
Starting From the Beginning
I walk timidly into the band room. It's so BIG. I had been there once before- that afternoon. Mr. Bradley invited me to come to corps- he said we needed more people in the front ensemble, the 'pit'. So I shrugged and said sure.
I'm regretting my decision to come. I don't see anyone I know- and then I see Tony. Tony I had met earlier that day, in band class. My friend Katie S, whom I met over the summer, had introduced me to him. I smile, and head over.
And then a girl calls the corps to attention, a senior, with short brown hair. She yells, "Corps, atten-HUT!" Everybody yells the word 'Hugh'. Their legs snap together, their arms into position. I look confused for a moment, and then I follow suit. Mr. Bradley, the Band Director, comes forward and explains that today was just basically orientation. We'd break off into sectionals. After he dismisses us, he comes over to me and introduces me to our section leader- Jacob. Jacob seems to show no emotion, he doesn't smile when I shake his hand.
We take the marimba out into the hall, and Jacob shows me a few exercises and introduces me to Beau, the other pit member. There's only three of us. We start talking, and I mention something about Little Shop of Horrors.
And Jacob breaks into the first real smile I've ever seen him make.
"Dear god, PLEASE don't mention that musical. I hate it."
I grin. This is going to be a beautiful friendship. At least, so I think.
