Chapter 10
Nightmares and blood
The next two weeks were more or less the same. But she would never forget her first charms lesson ever. Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays were the days when she had first lessons with her sixth year friends. Dean was howling with laughter when she told him about it. He was in the ward with a badly cut arm, apparently he was using the severing charm to cut his parchment and his hand slipped. It seemed either Flitwick hadn't heard or didn't listen to how well Soraya could perform sixth grade spells on her first day. He spoke to her calmly and softly that made her blood boil, but she didn't say anything back as he could take away house points.
"Now my dear don't worry if you don't get this right the first time as it's a very complicated charm." Soraya didn't look happy when she looked over to her friends. She had a disgusted look on her face to being pitied like that. She hated special treatment and smiled at Flitwick, she then looked back at the object in front of her she had to charm. She performed it straight away without any trouble and Flitwick was so shocked that he fell of his cushion. Her friends grinned when they saw the look on Flitwick's face afterwards. He awarded her ten points to being the first to perform it right. Soraya looked over to Hermione who did it too and looked crestfallen that she didn't get the points. Soraya looked sadly at her as if to say sorry. But Hermione saw this so she shook her head politely and smiled. Soraya smiled back and continued with her charms class.
All through the day Flitwick kept on awarding her points to Griffindor and falling off his cushion. She had to stifle a laugh every time he fell off and looked down when he awarded her points. Then she finally snapped and spoke to him politely at the end of the day when everyone else had left.
"Please sir don't always give me points for doing charms. I mean it's nice and everything but it gives no one else a chance, and I'm just not used to being praised like this." Flitwick looked sadly at her and sighed as he looked in to her golden eyes.
"I'll tell you what. I'll award points to you if no one else can get it right the first time. It's just that you perform your charms so well and they have to be rewarded."
"I like this deal sir and thanks for understanding."
A few more weeks later Soraya and Amily were looking forward to the Halloween feast. The only annoying thing was Ron just couldn't stop going on about it. At one point his little sister Ginny got so sick of hearing about it that she raised her wand and cast a silent spell on him. Ron couldn't talk for hours after that, but it did wear off before the end of the day though. Good thing was that she did it on a Saturday rather than a school day. But even that didn't stop him going on about Halloween, only this time he didn't go on about it all the time or when Ginny was in ear shot.
"Yeah a visit to Hogsmeade and then the Halloween feast. Now that's a good day out."
"Hogsmeade?"
"Yeah a wizard village in front of the Hogwarts entrance gates. You got permission to go from your parents didn't you?"
"I don't know Ron, I think they might've told Dumbledore but I just don't know. I'll ask him after lunch."
So when everyone started to leave Soraya went up to the staff table. She spoke to Dumbledore when all the other teachers had left.
"Professor Dumbledore I heard about this Hogsmeade visit on Halloween and I was wondering if-"
"Don't worry your parents have given their permission about that." Soraya breathed a sigh of relief when she looked in to his face. His eyes twinkled, and then he looked from happy to very serious in a second.
"However. I would be more concerned about getting to charms on time as Filius has already left."
"Filius?"
"Filius Flitwick."
"Oh!" Soraya ran down the stage, stopped and then turned round.
"Thank you sir." She said quickly. Soraya grabbed her bag and then sprinted to Charms. Flitwick did not look happy.
"Well Soraya you're just in time, and here I was thinking you weren't going to join us."
"Sorry Professor."
"Just don't do it again Soraya. You just think yourself lucky that I saw you talking to Dumbledore." Soraya sat down to continue the day unhindered that she came in late. 'At least this didn't happen on the first day.' She thought looking at her object and charming it.
At the end of lessons she came out of her charms class and was approached by professor Dye. Soraya was accompanied by Amily as the first years had charms last lesson on Mondays.
"Dumbledore sent me to take you to his office."
"Ok Professor. I'll see you later Amily." Amily waved goodbye to Soraya and went in the opposite direction to the grounds.
Soraya and Dye walked the corridors for at least ten minutes before stopping in front of a statue. It was shaped like a gryphon and looked very life like. Soraya wondered what was going to happen next when Professor Dye said a password.
"Fizzing Whizzbies!" The statue moved to expose a winding staircase.
"I have to go now Soraya see you on Friday."
"Bye sir."
Slowly but surely she went up the stairs. She quickly noticed they were moving up themselves, kind of like a winding escalator. Soon she was standing in front of a door and knocked on it.
"Come in Soraya." Soraya was a bit freaked that he knew who it was. But she went in with a straight face and seemed totally calm. There was also a plump man with rumpled grey hair standing in front of Dumbledore's desk who Soraya had never seen before. But she noticed he had a very odd expression on his face as he saw her coming in.
"Is this her Dumbledore?"
"Yes Cornelius. This is Soraya, and it was she who was greeted by the founders."
"Tell me young lady, did you know anything about this at all?"
"No sir. No idea at all, and I want answers just as much as you do."
"This has to be a prank."
"I have told you Cornelius. Serverus has already checked the hat for any form of tampering at all."
"Excuse me sir, but who are you?"
"Oh I forgot to introduce myself. I am Cornelius Fudge minister of magic my dear; and I hear you have been doing very well in school. No trouble I take it?"
"No sir, none at all...minister do you know anything about this? Because I certainly don't and I hate being kept in the dark if it's important."
Fudge sat in a chair next to her and he looked very tired all of a sudden.
"In the time of the founders a powerful seer made a prophecy of a child being born at Hogwarts. This child would come back in sixteen years with a scar across the middle of their face. The seer also stated that the child would have extraordinary powers which he or she would use to protect the school. Also to send those that intended harm upon these walls back to where they came from. The child would not be able to be placed by the sorting hat alone, and so the hat would call upon the founders for help." When he finished Soraya felt very sick and gulped. She couldn't believe her ears and wanted to be as far away from this place as possible.
"So I-I guess that's me then?"
"Seems that way Soraya."
"The –the seer didn't say... exactly when these powers are supposed to kick in ... did they?"
"No, and that's why I am worried. It seems the powers you are to have will be a whole new level. No use of a wand is required and incantations will not be used. Just the mind and hand movements, everything will be at your mercy from the elements to man made things. So just about everything can be controlled by a wave of your hand."
Soraya thought deeply about this before coming to a possible conclusion.
"I am an evolution?"
"Ummm...no, this kind of power will not be seen until far, far in to the future. It has also been said that these powers were seen in a very distant time in history as well."
"So I am caught in the middle? How does that work?"
"We don't know about that. But the seer did say something about the positioning of the planets. There is something about the magical strength in the place where you were destined to be born as well."
Soraya took some deep breaths and put her head in her hands.
"My future is in the stars as well and I'm a freak to today's witch. I also have to use some extraordinary powers I've never known I possessed and I'm supposed to use these to save the school? Bloody Hell!"
"Watch your language young la-"
"I think under the circumstances Cornelius, she is more than qualified to say such a thing." There was a long and uneasy silence for ten minutes, but was interrupted by a knock at the door.
"Come in Serverus." Snape strode in with a serious look upon his face until he saw Soraya. She still had her head in her hands and didn't bother looking up at him.
"You told her then?" He said this with a slight trace of joy in his voice which made Soraya burn with rage.
He had known about this too and didn't think to tell her? 'Right that's it! If I want information I am never asking it from you! You didn't tell me two things now. Like I'm your niece for starters and now you didn't tell me about this?' He looked at her as though he was about to say something but she shot a look up at him as if to say. 'Don't you dare!' She was at breaking point and Snape could see he had gotten to her. So he closed his mouth and had a nasty sneer on his face.
"You can go now Soraya, I take it shall be seeing you at dinner I trust?"
"Ummm...I don't know sir, goodbye."
When she was out of Dumbledore's office Soraya ran down the stairs. Soraya wanted to get as far away from that office as she possibly could.
When she slowed down and stopped for breath Soraya noticed she was outside of the library. So she thought she would do her homework to get her mind off things. She needed some time alone to let this sink in and was glad to see that no one she knew was in the library. So she sat down at her usual place and began the essays. It wasn't long before she finished and was satisfied with what she had done. But it hadn't done the trick at all and she felt just as sick. Soraya placed her head in her hands and each time she ran the conversation through her head it sounded ten times worse. She could feel her whole body trembling, so she decided to relax in a comfy chair next to the fire in Griffindor tower.
Just then the dinner bell rang for dinner. Soraya knew that if she saw food then she would be physically sick. So she continued her journey up to the tower. But then Snape rounded a corner and spotted her. There was no point in hiding anywhere as the sides were solid wall from end to end. So she just went straight ahead and passed him with one thought leaping in to her mind as she did so. 'GIT!' She made it to the other side without talking to him and her heart gave a leap of joy. Until he spoke.
"Oh by the way Miss. Griffis. Dumbledore wants you to see him in his office at lunchtime tomorrow."
"I'll be there sir."
"Aren't you having dinner?"
"I'm not hungry."
"The minister will be disappointed."
"Excuse me sir?"
"He wanted to see you eat to make sure whether you're real or not."
"I am asking myself that same question right now. I don't believe a word of what was said half an hour ago sir."
"I would because this is very real no matter who wants to believe it or not." With that Snape continued his journey down the corridor and Soraya continued hers to the Griffindor tower.
The comfy chair and fire treatment didn't work so she just gave up and went to bed. It took her a long time to get to sleep because she kept on remembering the conversation. No matter how much she tried Soraya just could not shut it out. But eventually she went to sleep.
She had a very strange dream that night. The founder's animals were moving towards her and set off a beam of light in to the air. Then they vanished and a mirror appeared. Soraya looked at her reflection and at first nothing happened. Then a second later her scar proceeded to bleed all over the place. She had turned in to an animal which was half lion and half Eagle. 'A gryphon? What does this mean?' Then the dream shifted and she was a baby again, but this time she was in a different room and two people were staring happily at her. The man had black hair whilst the woman had dark brown hair and fair skin. 'Mum? Dad?'
Then there was a loud bang. Her father handed her to her mother.
"Take Soraya to her room."
"But..."
"NOW!!!"
So Soraya was then being carried by her mother to her bedroom and placed her in her crib. Just like before the dirty great snake appeared, and before the woman could take out her wand the snake had wrapped itself around her and snapped her neck in one quick crush of its coils. Then the snake rounded on Soraya and attacked. It was a good thing Soraya had moved; otherwise it would have swallowed her whole. The only thing that was left was a deep gash across her face from one of the snake's fangs. Now she thought she would be screaming, but the venom in the snake's fang made her feel very sleepy.
Then a man appeared. But he looked less like a man as he had the face of a snake. Beside him was a man in a black cloak whose face was hidden so Soraya couldn't see him.
"Stop Nagini! Let me see the child." The ugly man came closer to her and put his face into what she thought was a smile. The blood was obscuring her vision in one of her eyes, but she could still see him well enough.
"My lord, I thought you said no harm would come to them." The man in the black cloak spoke. But his hood was obscuring his voice so she still didn't know who he was. But she could diffidently hear a strong not of terror in his voice.
"I did the same to everyone else who didn't want to join."
"At least spare the child...s-she could prove useful in the future."
"What?" Said the snake faced man shrilly. "Let her live so she can avenge her parents? No its better this way and she will die in her sleep. The venom has quite a soporific effect." Then a loud bang could be heard downstairs. Nagini went down first to investigate. "Trouble makers! Stay here and make sure the child dies!"
As soon as his master left the hooded figure sprang in to action and fed Soraya a very nasty tasting potion. It made her less sleepy but not enough to cry yet. Lei apperated next to her and the hooded figure looked up. Lei was about to raise his wand when the man quickly explained what he was trying to do. So Lei lowered it again and looked at him.
"Take her from here now Lei. Far, far away so he can't find her." So Lei turned the crib in to a portkey. The hooded figure smashed a statue with a green light was shooting out at the end of his wand.
"Just to make it look authentic, now go!" Then he fell down on the floor and started to groan as Lei touched the crib.
Lei and Soraya were sucked in to Lie's house. Now Soraya was awake enough to feel the pain and was screaming her head off.
"Lei how is she how is..."
"SORAYA!"
Soraya woke with a start and saw Hermione looking right at her with a hand clapped over her mouth in horror. Hermione's outburst had woken everyone else they shared the room with and then they too did the same thing. Then Soraya felt her scar searing with unimaginable pain. Soraya clapped a hand up to it and 'splat!' She looked down to see her face, pillow and some of the bed was dripping with blood. Soraya took a nearby towel and held it to her scar to stem the bleeding.
"I'll got get McGonagall!" Hermione ran out of the door and left Soraya in the room with the panic stricken girls.
Then Amily came running in and stopped before her bed. Amily looked as horrified as Hermione, so Soraya gave her a few comforting words and spoke through the pain.
"It's OK Amily...don't worry...ok!" Amily nodded, and a second later Hermione appeared with McGonagall. She nearly collapsed at the site of Soraya on the bloody bed and put her hand to her heart.
"Oh my goodness! Hospital wing child! Now!" So McGonagall took Soraya by the hand and led her there with Hermione running right behind them. Soraya's top part of her pyjamas was covered in blood above her waist. She was still holding the towel to her head to stem the bleeding but to no avail. Her scar just bled right through the towel. McGonagall and Hermione were still right beside Soraya when they arrived at the ward's entrance.
"It's Ok Hermione! I'm not going to die or anything!"
"Yes but still...oh never mind."
A minute later and Madam Pomfrey came in with McGonagall. She had a potion in one hand and bandages in the other.
"This should help stop the bleeding." She poured it in to the open scar and Soraya cringed. The potion felt very sticky and gloopy like treacle and smelled like seaweed. But nothing happened and the bleeding continued.
"Has this ever happened before?"
"Yes, but it stopped two seconds afterwards."
"I'll put the bandage on. But the blood replenishing potion won't get here for two days. You are going to be weak tomorrow my girl."
Half way through when Soraya was getting changed her knees gave way and she had to be helped to get in to bed. The bandages were changed every few hours that night and Soraya tried to get back to sleep. But the pain in her scar was too much; she screwed her eyes up every time a sharp pain went through it. So Madam Pomfrey gave her another potion to sleep and in a few mouthfuls she was under. Soraya had never slept so soundly before and didn't have any dreams.
Whilst she slept a visitor stopped by in the middle of the night. This person held up their lantern to see Soraya more clearly as all the torches were put out. Soraya moved and made a slight noise as the light hit her eyes, so the figure stepped back and shielded the light with a hand in front of the lantern. Then the figure stood there looking at her for a few minutes before deciding to leave. The only sound in the ward that night was the swishing of a cloak as the visitor left.
Soraya wasn't prepared to how she felt when she woke up again. He limbs felt heavy, her scar throbbed and was bleeding a lot. She could hardly move when Madam Pomfrey came over to her.
"You're awake at last. You slept for a whole day and now it's Wednesday. Your scar is bleeding but at least it's slowed down a little compared to that night. Does it hurt?" Soraya did not want to answer such a stupid question but just sighed and said.
"...yes." Everything seemed slower to go through her ears to her brain, and every sound was painful. Her head ached to every little noise like she was having a very bad migraine or something.
But then her brain speeded up a little and she started to move. The noises didn't hurt her head anymore and she was forced to eat something by Madam Pomfrey. Soraya had very little energy to move and was almost subjected to being fed like a baby. But Soraya used all her strength so as not to appear to need such help. Madam Pomfrey sighed as Soraya struggled to eat and almost passed out when she had eaten as much as she possibly could.
"You must really stop pushing yourself like this."
Soraya just turned away and fell asleep again. She hated asking for help and still stuck to her old Morals. She had these when she was at the orphanage. Soraya was Amily's body guard but would never let anyone else help herself. She was always so angry and lashed out when she could take no more annoyance from anyone. Half of Cartmen's gang ended up with broken noses or black eyes and Soraya got detention after detention but she never cracked. But it wasn't the fact that Cartmen and her gang drove Soraya nuts and paid for it with bruises. But the fact that Soraya realised everyone always left her at some point or another. So most of the time Soraya found herself on her own and so she started fending for herself. The only person that stopped Soraya from being cold hearted and friendless was Amily.
Even though she couldn't speak Amily always seemed to make Soraya whole. Without Amily Soraya would have let her heart turn cold and then she wouldn't have made friendships in the school at all. The other thing about Soraya was that she hadn't cried since the Hung's died. Even at the funeral all she did was look angry with an incomprehensible sadness in her eyes. So all her sadness and tension just kept building up over the years as she kept burying it deep within herself. She let some of it out piece by piece on Cartmen and her pathetic gang. But even that didn't make a great dent in the ball that kept on getting bigger and bigger over the years.
When Soraya woke again she felt a little better and was able to get up. She stretch her legs a bit and got changed back in to her robes.
"Good to see you've changed. Are you feeling any better?"
"...a bit stronger madam Pomfrey." Just then the wards doors opened and Dumbledore came in with Fudge. Madam Pomfrey looked like she could spit fire when they came towards Soraya's bed.
"You can't talk to her Albus! She is in no fit state to be questioned now!"
"Poppy I am just concerned for this child's welfare as you are. So I just came in to visit and see how she's doing." Madam Pomfrey scowled as she stormed to her office.
Dumbledore sat next to Soraya and looked kindly at her.
"Hello Soraya. Tell me, how are you feeling?" His voice was softer than usual and Soraya felt a tinge of anger. She could hear a strong note of pity in his voice.
"Where do I start? Drained...tired...and weak I guess. I hate being weak!" Dumbledore looked at her in a very concerned sort of way and looked sadly in to her eyes.
"Soraya your anger is frightening as to what I have heard. You have to sometimes share what you are feeling otherwise it will burst forth and have dyer consequences." Soraya sighed to calm down and looked back at Dumbledore.
He smiled and got up, but Soraya could see the sadness was still in his eyes.
"We are waiting for the potion to arrive today. I assure you that feeling weak will be gone when you have had a dose. Then your blood levels will be back up and add some colour to your face."
"Thank you sir."
"But Dumbledore-"
"As Poppy said Cornelius she is in no fit state to be questioned." So they left Soraya in the ward and Madam Pomfrey came back still looking a little angry.
By lunchtime the blood replenishing potion had arrived. Soraya had a dose and felt a bit stronger after that. But madam Pomfrey insisted that she stay for one more day and after Soraya saw how scary Madam Pomfrey could look, she did nothing but comply and stayed in the ward for just one more day. Soraya cringed as pain would sometimes shoot through her scar and the bandage was still being changed every few hours. But that wasn't the worst thing what made Soraya cringe. For she what she had tomorrow lesson wise. It was Thursday...and that meant potions. Soraya thought she had neither the strength of mind or body to under go such a thing in her condition. But she still showed herself to look strong no matter what and on top of all that she wasn't eating much at all. Because the blood potion was making her fell very ill indeed.
*** I think went too far by making her suffer like that...but it makes the story a bit more interesting.
