It was a bad break. A young Hal Jordan lay in his bed, a cast on his leg.
It was truly the injury that saved the world. At the cost of the ability to
walk or "play" Green Lantern for a few months he had stopped a Qwardian
invasion. A young beautiful woman entered the room. Carol Ferris the love
of Green Lantern's and Hal Jordan's dreams. He was perfectly willing to
sacrifice his ring and being a test pilot for a while for that woman. She
was perfectly willing to take a vacation from Ferris to be with her man.
Truly they were the perfect couple. How happy. And yet this story is not
about the two of them all.
No this is a story about a young single mother. At this point in time single mothers were scorned upon but her husband had died and she was too independent to turn to anyone yet too busy to date. Donna Parker sat in her chair with her young daughter and remembered in secret that day four years ago in which her life was almost forever changed. On the television she noticed an interview with the current Green Lantern. She remembered the little blue men named The Guardians of The Universe who had asked her to take a ring just like his. Of course she turned it down. Three children was enough for her and yet to this day she still got anxious when she thought about it. "Maybe I made the wrong decision when I turned it down. There's daycare centers and it's not like some huge monster attacks everyday..." She would think. "But oh well. The decision is made. I'll never be the Green Lantern..." How wrong she thought. Because this day Donna Parker is your chance to rethink that...
Carol set Hal's tray full of his breakfast down. An array of different kinds of breakfast foods including bacon, pancakes, waffles, eggs (over- easy and scrambled), and french toast. She left the room and Hal began to cut his bacon. Suddenly he jumped and dropped his knife and fork at the sight of one of the immortal Guardians of The Universe.
"Harold Jordan. The Green Lantern of Sector 2814." The Guardian who would someday become to Hal and Green Arrow "Old-Timer" boomed. "You were injured stopping Sinestro and The Qwardians."
"Beyond the obvious, Guardian... ?" Hal said going back to his breakfast.
Appa Ali Apsa didn't look amused. "This has come to our attention. We must select a successor for you. Perhaps Guy Gardner of Baltimore."
Hal continued to cut into his pancakes and took a bite then looked at the profile in front of him. "Guy Gardner... Guy Gardner... nah too violent."
Appa almost let out a smile knowing the fact that Guy was their other choice. "Donna Parker?" He said showing the profile for her.
"Sounds good to me. As long as she can handle it for a couple of months." He replied. He willed the ring to a now floating fully formed Appa. Appa used his Guardian powers to disappear to this replacement woman.
Donna reached over to tuck her daughter in when she heard a knock at the door. She looked at her daughter and said "I'll be right back." She sprinted to it and opened it to find the same little blue man she had met four years ago. She jumped back in fright but calmed down. "Perhaps I should make this easier on you." He said taking the human form he would later take to travel with Green Arrow and Green Lantern. "I will be brief." He continued. She nodded. "Please be. My children are asleep and frankly you already have my answer." "This only temporary. Our Green Lantern is injured. You will need to replace him until he is healed." Appa finished. "No. I told you I have to be a mother." She replied. "Who knows what will happen if I'm not around to take care of them." Appa smiled. "Just think about it." He handed her the ring and lantern and disapparated...
