The next day, Matthew walked through the Hellsing facility towards Seras's
room. Fargason had debriefed them after they'd returned from yesterday's
mission. The computer team had gotten a large amount of data. It would
take a couple days to decrypt it all, but they would soon know a lot more
about what they were dealing with. A communication line was being set up
with the Iscariot organization at the Vatican so Alexander could be kept
appraised. Sir Integra had still not decided whether or not to involve
him, but better to be ready to call him in if the extra help was needed.
Speaking of extra help, Hellsing was still working on bolstering troops lost in the attack of the Valentine brothers. Seras had been asked to help train, and had accepted. Matt decided to tag along, having nothing else to do. He knocked on Seras's door. She opened it and smiled at seeing him. "Ah, Matthew. Good to see you. Ready to see how the new recruits do?"
Matthew smiled back and nodded. "Sure am. Let's hope they do better then I did when I got here."
"You did have a lot on your mind that first week, that's for sure. Anyway, let's get to the training area."
Matthew gestured down the corridor. "After you."
Half an hour later, Matthew watched as Seras gathered the group to start their briefing. "All right, group three. Let's move on to you. As you heard in the earlier briefing, when you encounter a target shoot only for the head. Hits to other parts of the target won't be counted. If you shoot a non-threat target you will fail immediately and the test will end. The arrows will help guide you through the course. Questions, anyone?"
A man spoke up. To Matthew he had no accent, meaning he was possibly from the United States. Matt disliked him after his first words. "Hey, girl."
Seras was annoyed as well. "What is it, then?"
"We heard some crap about there being a real vampire in this unit."
Still irritated, Seras coolly replied, "Have you?" The response from the group was laughter. Seras walked towards the man. "Oh, it seems there is something wrong with your MP5." She reached up and grabbed his weapon's barrel.
"Uh... What do you mean?" the man replied.
Effortlessly, Seras twisted her hand and bent the barrel nearly ninety degrees. "It seems that the barrel it bent." The man looked at his weapon and at Seras unbelievingly. Seras stepped back, smiling. "You'd better have it replaced quickly or you'll miss your chance to test." She started walking to the door to where Matthew stood, his arms crossed across his chest.
Matthew shook ever so slightly as he tried to contain his laughter. He strained to keep the smile off his face. Seras stood next to him. Matthew lowered his left arm, holding out his hand next to her. "Nice," he complemented. Seras smacked his hand with hers in a low-five and Matthew moved his arm back to his chest.
The group actually did quite well. Most of the managed to stay on target, and no one else in the group questioned there being real vampires in Hellsing. The rest of the day was filled with training, though no one else needed the demonstration Seras gave to the man in group three. After joining Seras for their usual 'meal', Matthew went back to his room. Not feeling like reading e-mail at the time, he simply pulled up some music and relaxed.
He was interrupted some time later by a knock on the door. Matthew swiveled his chair to look. "Come in."
Walter entered the room. "Greeting, Mr. Jemeth."
"Hey, Walter. How're you?"
"Quite fine, Mr. Jemeth, thank you. I have something for you if you will join me in the armory."
Matthew stood and walked over to him. "After you."
Walter and Matthew walked over to the armory. This time, there was no case involved. Matthew's Valkyrie lay on the table. "I hope you don't mind, Mr. Jemeth, but hefting that weapon onto the table can be quite tiresome."
"Not a problem, Walter." Matthew grabbed the Valkyrie and hefted it. He noticed the change quickly. Its strap had been removed and in its place was a series of metal hinges and snaps with a clamp at the end. "I'm guessing this attaches to the rail on the pack."
"Correct." Walter grabbed the backpack and set it on the table. He attached the Valkyrie's clamp to the rail and demonstrated how it would slide from one side to the other. "When you have it in position over your shoulder, simply pull back and it will snap in place at your shoulder. It may even help stabilize the weapon when you fire. Of that I'm not certain, so you may want to test fire it first."
"Hey, as long as it isn't worse then before, I'll be fine." He opened the top of the backpack. Slipping into his British accent, he said, "Shall we load this up, then?"
Walter chuckled. "Certainly." He grabbed two boxes of ammo and helped Matthew load them. "You'll note that this pack holds more ammunition then before. It holds twenty rounds each of slug and shot rounds. If the next mission is as difficult as I fear it will be, you may need them."
Matthew nodded. In his normal voice, he replied, "Quite possibly. Thanks, Walter."
"Oh, and one more thing. I have a new holster belt for you as well." Walter grabbed a belt and set it on the table. "As you can see, it has several more holders for magazines. You may need them soon. Also, I've modified them so that when you press an empty pistol onto each holder, the magazine will be pushed into it by a spring. It should decrease your loading time."
"Excellent, Walter. This will help a grunch."
Suddenly, a voice came into Matthew's mind. 'Matthew, come to Integra's office.'
Matthew thought back. 'On my way, Seras.' He turned to Walter. "Gotta run, Walter. Seras needs me up in Sir Integra's office. I'll be back for the weapons in a bit. Something tells me we'll be launching on this mission as soon as possible."
"Quite possibly, Mr. Jemeth. I will be here when you return."
