Chapter One

A strange morning light had settled over the city of Port Charles, New York. There was something golden and mystical about the way it bathed everything as if it was pouring from heaven itself. Far above the earth, from the billowy depths of white clouds, a voice spoke.

"I'm really getting bored, Peter. These people, it's always the same old battles, the same old love affairs. I'm losing interest and you know how I hate to get bored in my favorite towns. They're losing their appeal."

Another voice replied, sounding uncomfortably worried.

"But what are you going to do about it? You're not going to bring in another trouble-making female, are you? There are certainly quite enough in this town already."

"No, no. Sage and Sam are excelling at that just as I'd predicted. No, I want something to entertain me and yet bring some healing to this city. It's tearing itself in pieces these days."

"Well what do you have in mind, sir?"

"Tell me, Peter, have you ever noticed the power of music? It can touch, change and explain things we never thought possible. I think I will give the gift of music to Port Charles for a while."

Carly Corinthos sat inside Kelly's, languidly stirring her coffee and eyeing the gooey doughnut resting on a napkin. Lorenzo had bought it for her as it had become a sort of morning tradition for the two of them. She liked to tease him that he was just trying to fatten her up. Thinking of him drove her gaze to the counter where he was paying. The heaviness that weighed upon her heart only got stronger at his smile. From the recesses of her mind came images of Sonny's broad grin, his lectures on junk food. She softly began to sing.

Carly: It's been seven hours and fifteen days

Since you took your love away

I go out every night and sleep all day

Since you took your love away

Since you've been gone I can do whatever I want

I can see whomever I choose

I can eat my dinner in a fancy restaurant

But nothing

I said nothing can take away these blues

Cause nothing compares

Nothing compares to you

It's been so lonely without you here

Like a bird without a song

Nothing can stop these lonely tears from falling

Tell me baby where did I go wrong

I can put my arms around every boy I see

But they'd only remind me of you

I went to the doctor and guess what he told me

Guess what he told me

He said girl you better learn to have fun

No matter what you do

But he's a fool

Cause nothing compares

Nothing compares to you

I know that living with you baby was sometimes hard

But I'm willing to give it another try

Cause nothing compares

Nothing compares to you

Carly mumbled quietly under her breath,

"Nothing ever will compare."

"What was that, darling?" Lorenzo smiled down upon her questioningly, holding his own steaming cup of black coffee. Carly returned his smile weakly but it was the best she could muster. Standing up and shaking off the images of the past that haunted her, she took the arm of the man who loved her now.

"It was nothing, honey. Just a daydream."

As Lorenzo and Carly exited Kelly's, their arms bound tightly around each other, a man watched from the shadows. Sonny Corinthos stepped out of the darkness of the alley into the new morning sun, his leather gloved hands rolled into fists. He watched with narrowed eyes as Lorenzo Alcazar rubbed Carly's thin back and Carly leaned into the curve of his arm as they walked away. The sick bastard had succeeded in stealing his wife but that wasn't enough for him. Now he was trying to steal Sonny's entire life-his children, his business. His eyes tore away from Alcazar to rest on the fading silhouette of his wife as they continued down the street. She had betrayed him and in return he had done the same to her. It had always been like this between them.

A war, a battle between love and hatred. They could never decide what side they were on but now Alcazar had chosen for them. Carly was now his enemy-his beloved enemy. On the street corner a musician in straggly clothes and a guitar case filled with change at his feet began to sing.

Musician: Roxanne - you don't have to put on that red light

Walk the streets for money

You don't care if it's wrong or if it is right

Roxanne - you don't have to wear that dress tonight

Roxanne - you don't have to sell your body to the night

Sonny, his stomach roiling in emotion, joined in, singing to himself.

Sonny: His eyes upon your face

His hands upon your hand

His lips caress your skin

It's more than I can stand!

Why does my heart cry?

Feelings I can't fight!

You're free to leave me but

Just don't deceive me!

And please believe me when I say

I love you!!!

Pushing over the nearest table in his anguish, he reverted to his other language.

Sonny: Yo que te quiero tanto, que voy a hacer

Me dejaste - me dejaste como una paloma

El alma se me fue; se me fue el corazon

Ya no tengo ganas de vivir porque no te puedo convencer

Que no te vendas, Roxanne!

Sonny: Why does my heart cry?

Musician: Roxanne - you don't have to put on that red light!

Sonny: Feelings I can't hide!

Musician: Roxanne - you don't have to wear that dress tonight!

Sonny: Why does my heart cry?

Feelings I can't fight!

Both: Roxanne!!!

Sam McCall looked up as the door to her bedroom on the Lazarus swung open and Sonny Corinthos exploded in. He looked like thunderclouds with his black suit and equally dark face. His brown eyes snapped like flames and he immediately began ripping off his jacket. Climbing across her bed, she asked worriedly,

"Sonny? Sonny, what is it?"

"I don't wanna talk about it." His reply was short, brusque and typical Sonny. Sam hadn't known her mobster lover very long but it had been long enough that she knew what could drive him to these moods. She tucked her raven hair back behind her ear and sighed,

"It's Carly, isn't it? You saw her. Did you argue?"

For a split second his rage turned on her and he said angrily,

"Sam! I said I didn't wanna talk about it! Now are we clear or not?!"

She felt herself cringe and hated every minute of it. She nodded, beckoning for him, welcoming him into her arms even though he had just spoken to her like a child. She could never turn him away.

"Fine, we're clear, hon. I won't ask again, I promise."

He went to her then and lost his anger, his aggravations in her body, losing himself in Sam until he couldn't recall why he'd been upset in the first place. He forgot his troubles, his worries; sometimes he even forgot himself. When they had finished with each other, both sated and complacent, Sam rolled to her side, leaving a sleeping Sonny beside her. She softly sang so as not to wake him.

Sam: The ice is thin come on dive in

Underneath my lucid skin

The cold is lost, forgotten

Hours pass days pass time stands still

Light gets dark and darkness fills

My secret heart forbidden

I think you worried for me then

The subtle ways that I'd give in but

I know you liked the show

Tied down to this bed of shame

You tried to move around the pain

But oh your soul is anchored

The only comfort is the moving of the river

You enter into me, a lie upon your lips

Offer what you can, I'll take all that I can get

Only a fool's here to stay

I don't like your tragic sighs

As if your god has passed you by

Well hey fool, that's your deception

Your angels speak with jilted tongues

The serpent's tale has come undone

You have no strength to squander

The only comfort is the moving of the river

You enter into me, a lie upon your lips

Offer what you can, I'll take all that I can get

Only a fool's here to stay

Sam blinked away fierce tears and hugged her arms tightly around herself, trying to warm that empty spot that Sonny had never touched. How had she ended up like this?

The songs are:

*Nothing Compares 2 U by Sinead O'Connor

*El Tango De Roxanne from the Moulin Rouge soundtrack

(If you're wondering, here's the translation to Sonny's Spanish verse.

And I who love so much, what am I going to do?

You left me, you left me like a dove

My soul has left me, my heart has left me

I no longer wish to live because I cannot convince you

Not to sell yourself, Roxanne.)

*Ice by Sarah McLachlan and for the GH history buffs, this is the song that played when Sonny and Carly first got together. I thought it fit Sam well.
