In Dreams

The amulet was glowing, burning and welding itself to his chest – the only thing keeping him from screaming in agony, was the sight of the slayer standing before him.
"Go on, then." He managed.
"No, no, you've done enough. You could still – "
He had to try to find a way of getting her out of there. "No, you've beat them back. It's for me to do the cleanup."
Faith called down from the opening in the school basement. "Buffy, come on!"
He tried again. "Gotta move, lamb. I think it's fair to say school's out for bloody summer."
Buffy's face creased with worry as she reached out to him. "Spike!"
"I mean it! I gotta do this." He held out his hand to stop her and she laced her fingers through his. He blinked in bemusement; their linked hands seemed to burst into flames.
Then she said the words that he had dreamed about, longed for, that he never thought he would hear.
"I love you."
Oh, the irony of it. Now, when it was too late. She needed to be free and this was the way he could do it, let her have her life back, now that there were many to take on the burden of being the slayer.
He forced himself to smile into her eyes and say, "No, you don't. But thanks for saying it." The whole cavern shook and rocks began falling around them. "Now go! I wanna see how it ends."
She gave him one last look and fled.
Somehow, he could feel the pain, but it seemed to have no effect upon him. He began to laugh, as a kind of ecstasy gripped him and he crumbled to dust.

His head dropped forward, he lifted it with a supreme effort and gaped at the figure before him, who smirked and said.
"Aw, still dreaming about me?"
He stared at her, mind numb.
"Buffy?"
Then he felt his wrist pinioned against the dank cold wall of the cavern and realization washed over him.
He threw his head back and screamed "Nooooooooooo"
All he could hear was the First's mocking laughter.

A/N This has been floating around in the back of my mind for some time. Now I've managed to write it, perhaps I can go back to concentrating on my main fic !
