I swear, no one. STOP LOOKING AT ME LIKE THIS. Enjoy.
"You're a wuss. You should have killed the witch, she was evil and deserved to die" The voice continued to scream inside Xander's head, no matter how hard he fought against it. It infected ever one of his senses, when he opened his eyes he saw lips mouthing the words and it made his skin shiver. He tried in vain to block out the words, focusing his mind on something else, but the voice was so loud it dragged his mind back to them kicking and screaming.
The door to Xander's small room opened and Anya poked her head through. She took one look at Xander huddled in the corner and felt heart clench. To take her mind off it briefly she made a sweep of the room with her eyes. It had white, stain-free walls and an iron bed up against the wall. It didn't look like the most comfortable room in the world, but such caring was beyond Anya. She let her eyes shift back to her boyfriend and she smiled for his sake.
"Hi" She said as she made her way into the room to allow the nurse to take her place in the doorway. "It's Anya, can you hear me?" Xander lifted his head up from its place on his knees, but he avoided looking at Anya.
"Stay away from me" He whispered, his voice shaking as he spoke every word. Anya's smiled dropped.
"Are you afraid you're going to hurt me like you did Dawn" She said a little too bluntly. Xander slammed his head against the wall, which unknown to Anya was in fact his response.
"Interesting pick of girlfriend, an ex-vengeance demon. What if she excepted her job again, would you be safe?" Xander closed his eyes and slammed his head against the wall again, only harder. Anya crouched down directly in front of him and took hold of his bandaged up hand.
"I'm going to help you, okay, you don't have to worry about hurting me, because I don't think you could. I mean in all honesty who hasn't wanted to throw a punch at Dawn at some point. Don't get me wrong she's sweet, but at times she can be a real pain" Xander wasn't listening; the voice had grabbed his attention, forcing to him to listen to only it.
"What if you had one argument and she decide to punish you for it. She could do it you know. Can you really trust her?"
"SHUT UP" Xander screamed. He jumped to his feet and ran to the opposite corner of the room "GET OUT OF ME HEAD" He banged his head against the wall repeatedly in a vain attempt to block to the voice out and if he was lucky knock himself out. Anya however ran to his side and grabbed his arm.
"Stop that, you'll hurt yourself" Xander stopped banging his head and shook his arm free from Anya's gripe.
"Why should you care, you've punished me for centuries, why care about me" Anya was stunned. For a moment she couldn't move or speak, not daring herself to believe that such words could come from the man she loved so much. She actually wished that she was the one hearing voices, that it hadn't been him who had spoken.
"I do care" Were the only words Anya managed to say before feeling tears well up in her eyes.
"Leave me alone" Xander said as he turned his back to her. Anya placed a hand on his shoulder, but he bolted back to his original corner.
"Go away" He screamed. He curled up into a ball and buried his face in his hands to shield the tears he had begun to cry. Anya just stood in the other corner, trying to get her legs moving towards him, but they wouldn't go. She wanted to wrap her arms around him and tell him that everything would be all right; that she would stay with him through out this, but she knew it would do no good. In the state he was in he'd only reject her and that was something she couldn't take anymore of. She slowly turned her body to the door and automatically her legs carried her to it. She turned her head briefly to look over her shoulder.
"Bye" She whispered, but the only response she got was a sob. The Nurse moved away from the door to allow Anya to leave. Once the door was closed behind her she burst in to tears, no longer managing to keep them back.
The Nurse came to her side and handed her a tissue, which Anya took and wiped her eyes.
"I know this must be hard," The Nurse said in a kind and gentle voice. Anya used the tissue to blow her nose before throwing it in the bin beside her.
"What's wrong with him?" She asked. The Nurse looked down at the chart on her clipboard.
"We're not completely sure, he appears to be suffering from a type of schizophrenia, but he doesn't seem to be responding at all to any of the usual drugs that are used to control the disorder" She sighed "We really don't know what else to do" Anya felt she was going to cry again, but she held it back.
"Is there any chance I can take him home?" She asked. The nurse sighed again and shook her head.
"I'm afraid we'll heave to keep him here until we can find a way to control his condition" Something suddenly occurred to Anya, something that should have occurred to her earlier on when the nurse was tell her about the drugs have no effect on Xander.
"Okay, thank you" Anya said quickly before running off down the corridor.
