When she picked up the telephone,
His voice came on the line.
Hermione was sitting on the couch one evening, watching her two boys play together, when the phone started ringing. She got up and answered it in the kitchen.
"Hello?" She said when she put the phone to her ear.
"Hermione, It's Harry." There was sadness in his voice.
"Harry, what's wrong?" she asked worriedly.
There was a pause, then,
"I'm not going to make it home tonight."
Hermione immediately knew why Harry would not be coming home.
She said, "This can't be happening." And tears fell from her eyes.
She said, "What am I supposed to do? I can't handle losing you."
He said, "I just had to call and say goodbye one last time."
"This can't be happening." Hermione breathed. She felt tears streaming down her face, but didn't bother wiping them away.
"What am I supposed to do, Harry? I can't handle losing you."
Harry sighed on the other end.
"I don't know, Hermione, but I just had to call and say goodbye one last time."
He said, "There are some things in this life that are out of our control, like who we fall in love with, and when it's time to go."
She said, "What about the plans we had?"
He said, "This connection's getting bad, now come on baby, let me hear you smile one last time."
Hermione didn't say anything, so Harry continued.
"Hermione, there are some things in this life that are out of our control, like who we fall in love with, and when it's time to go."
"What about the plans we had?" She asked desperately.
"What? I'm sorry Hermione, this connection is getting bad, now come on, love, let me hear you smile one last time."
She started to apologize for all the things that she'd done wrong.
She said, "I would've loved you better, if only I'd known."
He said, "You were the perfect wife. Promise me you'll go on with your life."
Hermione started apologizing for everything she did wrong.
"I would've loved you better, if only I'd known." She said, sobbing uncontrollably.
"No, Hermione. You were the perfect wife. One any man would ever hope for. Please promise me you'll go on with your life."
She said, "The boys won't understand."
He said, "Tell them daddy loves them and be strong."
"Harry, the boys won't understand. How am I supposed to explain this to them?" Hermione asked, barely able to talk.
Harry replied,
"Tell them daddy loves them and to be strong."
He said, "Hun, I've gotta go."
She said, "Don't you dare hang up. There's so many things I need to say. I love you so much."
There was silence for a moment, then, Harry said,
"Hun, I've gotta go."
"Don't you dare hang up. There's so many things I need to say. I love you som much." Hermione barely whispered.
It was almost like she felt him leave.
She cried out, "Can you still hear me?"
She fell down on the kitchen floor when the signal died,
As the pilot tried to pull out of the dive one last…
Hermione heard no reply and knew that Harry was gone, though she didn't want to believe it.
"Harry? Harry! Can you still hear me? Harry!"
She fell to the floor as the operator came on, saying the usual,
"If you'd like to make a call…" but Hermione didn't notice. She simply sat on the kitchen floor, hugging herself.
Elsewhere, Harry tried one more time to pull his plane out of the deadly dive it was in.
"I'll love you forever, Hermione." Were the last words he said before he hit the earth's floor…
