One Single Step - Prologue: Evil, Evil Envelopes.
Notes - Hi everyone. This is the sequel to Romeo and Julie. I know I said that I would get this up with in a week, but well, my internet situation is not as fantastic as I hoped it would be, not yet anyway, so it may take a little longer. I am putting this up now, and I will be bale to update a few times in the next few days (I came home for a visit) but after that, updates may be a little more spaced.
Anyway, like I said, this is a sequel to Romeo and Julie. You don't have to have read the last one for this, but a few of the other original characters may not make sense if you don't. A lot of OC's make appearances throughout it all.
Oh, and the rating. I might be over killing it, but better be safe then sorry. This sequel will contain contains language and adult situations that may annoy or offend some people.
Pairings - Fulton Reed/Beck Roman (OC), Julie Gaffney/Dean Portman, Adam Banks/Joanna 'Deanie' Portman (OC), Luis Mendoza/Audrey Madden (OC) and numerous other pairings along the way.
Disclaimer - The Ducks do not belong to me, every one else though, the Originals, I mean, are mine.

They say the journey of a million miles starts with one single step. There comes a time in every ones life when they have to start walking.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
The banner above him in the noisy hall proclaimed in large and white letters "congratulations seniors" the teenager stood, staring at the banner as he had for so many days now. Congratulations seniors, you have made it, this is the end, it is over, go home, nothing to see here. finto, kaput. Go get a life.
Fulton Reed, the teenager who stood, enraptured by the banner that always seemed to catch his eye every time he passed it, could hardly believe it. He was one of those seniors that the banner was congratulating. It was him. It was him and his friends. This was it. 12 years of sitting behind a desk, all that hard work, and sometimes the not so hard work and it was over. One more week (less then a week really, 5 days) and he was out of there, never to see Eden Hall, or Eden Hell, as he and his team mates so affectionately began to call it, again, never.
But really, Eden Hall was not that bad. Once the old Varsity team had all graduated and his team, the Mighty Ducks, had taken over, school surprisingly took a turn for the better, and this last year, what with the success of the prank wars, meeting Rebecca Roman, finally finding direction in his life, falling for Rebecca Roman, having the best English teacher in the whole school, realizing that acting was fun, having Rebecca Roman fall in love with him, watching his roommate and best friend Dean Portman fall in love with their long time friend Julie Gaffney, and seeing Jules fall back. And then, of course, there was the best thing that had ever happened to him, Rebecca Roman.
Rebecca had become his word within the space of an afternoon. He had been there for her when he hardly knew anything about her, and now, she was the love of his life, and very easily the centre of his universe. Rebecca, or Beck, inspired him to be a better person, as clichéd as it sounds. She had drive and direction, lots of ambition. Her dream was to attend Julliard school of music and then become the first chair violinist for the New York Symphony. She would do it to, Beck was by far the best musician that he had ever seen.
Beck had already applied and had her audition to get into Julliard. They had both already sent off their college applications, but Fulton was a lot less sure of his ability then he was of Beck's. Beck had helped him so much to get ready to send his applications. She had helped him study (for what felt like hours at a time), and then she had helped him correctly write his application essays. No matter how much Fulton had told her that it was useless, that he was not smart enough to get into any colleges and that he would have better luck applying to a burger place, because at least they had management programmes, she would not let him slack off. Beck hated it when people rubbished themselves like that, and she would not let Fulton do it. He was a smart guy, and any university or college would be lucky to have them in their architectural programme.
It had seemed so long ago that he had posted his applications, but today, he held in his hand a letter. The letter. He had seen it in the mail pile and literally stopped breathing. New York University of Technology. It was his first preference college, the one he wanted desperately to go to. This was the most important letter he had ever gotten. It could make or break his career. It was funny how his future could fit into just one envelope.
More then anything in the world, he wanted to be an architect. When he told most people that, they looked like they were going to laugh at him, a few of the ducks actually did laugh when he told them that he was not going to try out for the minors with Adam and Charlie, and try to get into an architectural college. Buildings had always been something that he had always been fascinated in, how they were created, and the art that could be incorporated. It was amazing, but just the idea of it all was exciting. He wanted to one day be able to design houses and buildings, just like the ones that for years he had seen as he wondered the streets of Minnesota.
As he looked down at the envelope in his hand again, he realized that the corner was shaking. Correction, he was shaking. His hands were shaking. He was scared. Fulton didn't think that he feared anything anymore, but he feared this envelope that he held. The crisp white envelope with the small purple emblem in the corner, it was making his heart race. He wanted to rip it open, but really, he was to scared to find out what this school would say.
"Fult!" the exclamation from the other end of the busy hall startled him, and he dropped the envelope to the floor. Sighing, when he picked it up and once again stood, he was faced with an overly anxious looking Beck. She held up an envelope of her own and smiled weakly. "Julliard"
"New York University of Technology" he replied. Rebecca reached out a hesitant hand and took his letter before pushing her own into his hands.
"I will open yours if you open mine" She told him. Fulton smiled. It was a good idea, because at least now if it was bad news, Beck could help soften the blow. But he looked down at his hand and realized he was still shaking. Now he didn't hold the rest of his life in his hands, he held her life. He didn't know which was worse.
Clutching his letter in one hand and his hand in the other, Rebecca led Fulton down the hall to one of the classrooms that was no longer being used. She opened the door, slipped inside, and the two of them stood together, facing each other, holding the envelopes between them.
"On the count of three?" Fulton asked nervously. He was as nervous for her as he was for himself. Rebecca had been a musician all of her life, and wanted to attend Julliard for close to a year. She would be crushed if this letter was not one of acceptance. And he would be crushed if her letter didn't accept her to. Fulton wanted this for Beck almost as much as she wanted this for herself.
"One…two…three…"
Neither looked at each other as they quickly slid a finger into the back of the envelope and pulled them open. Fulton took the letter out, flattened out the creases, and smiled broadly. " 'Dear Miss Roman, it is with great pleasure that we look forward to your attendance of Julliard next semester' Beck, you did it, you got into Julliard"
He rushed forward and embraced his girlfriend, lifting her off of her feet and holding her in his arms. He was sure that he had never in his life been this proud of anyone. She did it, her dream had come true, she would be attending Julliard next academic year. He pulled out of the embrace to kiss her when he realized that she was yet to say anything. Tears ran down her face, and Fulton smiled. "Happy Tears?"
"Sad tears" she whispered, holding up his letter. "Fult, I am so sorry, I know how much you wanted to come to New York with me"
In the excitement of Beck being accepted, Fulton had totally forgotten that he to had a letter that was being read. He carefully took the letter and scanned it, it was just a normal rejection letter, 'thank you for your interest but unfortunately we do not have a place for you at our institution next academic year' type of thing. Fulton scrunched into a ball and shoved it in his pocket. He and Dean would have a ceremonial burning of it later or something.
Beck still had tears in her eyes as he looked back at her, and Fulton grinned, wiping them away softly, trying to lighten the mood that had come between them. They should be celebrating, she had gotten into Julliard. This was her dream "Hey, Beck, it doesn't matter, I applied tons of other places, I will get in there."
"I know you will…" she began, then paused. "I know how much you wanted to go to go to school in New York"
He did want to go to school in New York. At first he had decided that he wouldn't be able to leave Minnesota, but after some extremely good advice from a very close friend, he had decided that he would regret leaving Beck more then he regretted leaving Minnesota. So he had told her that he would so with her. Then, as time went on, he realized that he was moving to New York as much as to be with her as to use it all as a learning experience. Where better to learn about some of the best architecture in the world then New York, home of some of the worlds greatest feats of architecture.
"But you got into Julliard" he replied, trying to move the conversation from what he had lost to what she had gained. He wrapped his arms around her and let her continue to cry if she wanted to. "That should be all that is important right now Rebecca. I am so proud of you…I love you"
"I love you to Fulton" she whispered, and it was so obvious to her that this was effecting him more then he was letting on. Beck knew that Fulton was crushed, but was hiding it for her sake.
"Beck, its alright. I didn't think I would get in. I hoped, but I never thought that I would be smart enough for a school like that" Fulton admitted to her. It hurt to admit these things, but when they were try, well, it was easier to just say them out loud and move on with life then to dwell on what had happened.
"But Fulton…" She began softly, almost vaunerablely. "I don't want to be away from you next year"
"I can come visit you, New York is not that far away. It will be ok. Beck, we will be ok" he smiled at her. Her sadness and tears were making him hurt even more then his own rejection. "Now come on, Miss Roman, smile at me. You made it into Julliard, you should be the happiest person on earth. Besides, I love you ten times more when you smile."
Beck smiled weakly at him, making him grin, lean forward, and kiss her frown. When he pulled away, she was smiling. There were still tears in her eyes, but at least she was smiling at him. "Lets go find the other Ducks and celebrate.

There, I know it is short, but it is the prologue, please review, and I might put up chapter two sometime today as well.
