Inu Yasha No Yume
Chapter 9 – Inu Yasha
He sat on the opposite side of the fire, rubbing special oil on Tettsusaiga's fang. His eyes were directed at what he was doing, but he was looking elsewhere and unfocused.
Yume watched him work, unsure of what to say or do. She sat with her knees pulled tightly up to her chest, Inu Yasha's cloak wrapped around her and her own yukata slung over her shoulders. She shivered again.
"Shall I put another log on?" He asked, looking at her from the corner of his eye.
She shook her head. "No..." She didn't know what else to say and silence fell on them again as she stared back into the flames.
Inu Yasha's eyes didn't leave her. He sighed and went back to oiling Tettsusaiga.
"Kikyo was the miko who guarded the Shikon no Tama 50 years ago," He spoke with conviction, catching Yume's attention. "I wanted to make myself a full Youkai. I followed Kikyo for a long time, hoping for a chance to steal the Tama, but it never came. I never attacked her directly and when she used her arrows on me she never struck the final blow," Yume stared, intrigued by what he was saying.
"Once I realized how I felt for her," He continued, "we got closer. One day, she told me I could use the Shikon no Tama to become human and that that would purify it so she could also become a normal woman," He paused in his work. "By then, I wanted nothing more than to be with her," He continued to oil his blade, "to love her.
"The next day I went to the God Tree to meet her when Naraku attacked me disguised as Kikyo. Enraged that I had been tricked by Kikyo, I went to the village and stole Shikon no Tama while soiling it with bitter blood," He sheathed Tettsusaiga and looked at Yume.
"Kikyo caught up with me even though Naraku had wounded her. She still managed to place the sealing spell on the arrow that pinned me to the God Tree," He touched his chest. "She died that same day from those wounds.
"We died hating and mistrusting each other. Now, Kikyo wanders this world, unable to rest thanks to an Ogress called Urasue who tried to steal Kagome's soul and put it in a body made form Kikyo's bones and grave soil. Hatred is the only thing that moves her now, hatred for me. She can't rest until I am dead." A long pause ensued.
"Why tell me all this?" Yume asked. "I thought you didn't want me to know your past."
He shrugged. "You seem to use your talent more to figure people out, not be nosy. I trust you, I suppose. After all, you trusted me."
"Do you still love Kikyo? Or do you love Kagome-sama?"
He looked away. "My heart cannot forget Kikyo. Not a day goes by that I don't think of her. She died because of me and wants me dead. But Kagome is here with me now. At first she was just a replacement for Kikyo, but anymore I take for granted that she'll always be there..."
"Won't she be? She has deep feeling for you, Inu Yasha. Deeper than you may know."
He didn't answer and Yume felt the lump in her throat grow again. She hated Naraku. He had destroyed so many people's lives with his selfish evil. Miroku, Sango, Inu Yasha...
Gripping her arm, she dug her nails in deeply, drawing blood. She heard Inu Yasha sniff and knew he'd caught scent of her blood. He stood and came over to her, staring at her with eyes full of worry.
"Don't do that," He whispered.
She looked angrily away. "It won't make any difference, if it gets my mind off of," She paused, "him."
"Will it make any difference?" He asked, sitting next to her.
She looked away. "They're coming."
Inu Yasha looked up, his nose catching the scent of Kagome. He stood and waited for them to burst through the trees. Kirara's flame came into view and he waved them down, keeping an eye on Yume who curled up into a ball, hiding her face from anyone's sight.
