Inu Yasha no Yume
Chapter 12 – Stranger
The warm water engulfed her up to her neck. She sighed in the delight of a hot bath after a week of travel and only cold streams to rinse off in.
Water no longer stung the cuts and scrapes on her body. Yet they were a constant reminder of her other pain if not the physical part. She healed quickly, so most were faint scars of the past. Other, deeper cuts were healed into white scars that didn't make much difference.
She shuddered, recalling those memories. Viciously, she attacked her body with the cloth she kept with her traveling gear, unable to clear her flesh of the parasite, Naraku.
When his touch subsided briefly, Yume proceeded to scrub her hair of dirt and grime. She ducked under to rinse the soap out and came back up with her face to the sky. She shook her head, freeing her hair from the water droplets and squeegeed it with her hands.
A snap sounded not too far off in front of her. She ducked back into the water, her hair floating about her face like moss. Her nose barely peeked over the surface and she strained her ears to hear who was coming.
Silence came over the pool, spawning fear in its wake. Who was coming? What did they want? Did they know she was there? Would they hurt her?
Darkness began to set beneath the canopy of trees in the fading light of an orange evening sun. She couldn't see who was coming and she was sure her pounding heart could be heard by the one approaching.
There was no other sound after the initial snap. Yume was a slight swim away from the rock where she left her sword and clothes.
What if whoever it was knew she was there?! The hot spring pool was oval-shaped with a wall of rocks around it, keeping the mineral water in. It was raised three feet above the ground with a depth of at least ten feet in some places; its diameter was around twenty feet.
With darkness falling rapidly, they could've moved around the forest to the other side...
A long time passed and stars were visible by the time Yume stood to her full height. She hoped they'd moved on, but doubted it and hurriedly re-squeegeed her hair.
Something contacted stone behind her and she whirled to see who it was. A figure, darkened by the night stood on the rim of the hot pool.
Yume suppressed a gasp and backed up a step from the figure. Glowing amber eyes watched her keenly, slightly illuminating his face and white bangs. She tried to back up farther, but was stopped by the power in his voice.
"Don't move..."
