Neville's Letter
I was there in the beginning. I was there in the end. We grew together. Now, I stand-alone. I catch myself now and then, listening. Listening for the their sounds. Laughter. The sound of their laughter would make us all smile. I can't help but smile as I think back to the howler. Arguing. Oh, how those two would argue, while the third would be there as a referee, trying not to laugh at the absurdness of it all.
And the adventures they had. Of course, we only heard bits and pieces. But there was one adventure we weren't to hear about. I know, I was there.
It happened in our sixth year. Only none of us thought it would happen so soon. Voldemort. He attacked. We did what we could. Ginny was the first to go down. Her leg was broken, but she fought off her attacker. Draco took down the one person Harry despised the most, next to Voldemort, of course. Bellatrix LaStrange. Bellatrix had stupefied me.
Ron was next to go down. He died, taking the killing curse meant for Luna. Harry and Hermione fought side by side until the killing curse took Hermione down too. Seeing her go down had an effect Voldemort never saw coming. Harry, maddened by the loss of the love of his life, pulled out Godric Gryffindor's sword and plunged it into Voldemort's black heart, twisting and stabbing until he was certain the man was truly dead.
Seeing Draco taking care of Ginny, Harry freed me then turned his attention back to his fallen friends. I turned my attention to Luna. In an instant, something happened. Something I wish every day I could have prevented. When I turned to look for Harry, I saw a sight that had me dropping to my knees, sobbing like a baby.
While my attention had been on Luna, Harry had brought the two people that he loved the most together. Then, he simply passed away. It was if he couldn't bear the thought of living without the other two pieces of his heart.
When we returned to school for our seventh year, we found someone had put up a portrait of the three of them near the entrance to Gryffindor tower. After the first month, we awoke one morning to a sight that is still there today. Someone had covered the portrait with a sheet, like a shroud. There was a note pinned to it. It said that although the effort was appreciated, it just hurt too much to look at. I like to think I know who it was, who beat me to it. But I'll never give away his secret. Our spy.
Years have passed since that night. Draco and Ginny have since married. They have twin sons, Ron and Harry, named after the two people we loved and lost, but will never forget. Ginny is pregnant now. If it's a girl, they want to name her Hermione. Draco is Potions master, having taken over Professor Snape's job. Snape, after a brief stint as Defense against the Dark Arts teacher and found his heart wasn't in it, gave it up to take over Professor McGonagall's position. Professor McGonagall is Headmistress now. Professor Dumbledore finally retired. I know that later on both he and Hagrid will be visiting Luna at St. Mungo's. Having watched Ron take the killing curse for her had caused Luna's mind to snap. She spends her days rocking back and forth, rocking with a pillow in her arms, humming a tune. Those of us who know, know she's humming 'Weasley is our King'.
I find I must go. I'm off to teach a new group of students about my friends. We miss you, rest in peace.

I was on my way home from work when the idea for this popped into my head. I had no choice but to write it as it woke me up at 11 o'clock at night and kept me up til 1 am when I finished writing it. I'll be the first to say it gave me cold chills writing it. Hope you found this enjoyable.
