Chapter3: an Unexpected Guest

After a busy first week at school, Sirius took Harry and Charlie back to Pranksters Palace for the weekend.

It was a sunny September day and Harry and Charlie were practising flying on their little play brooms. Sirius was watching them drinking a butterbeer and lounging on a sun bed.

The day was a lazy haze. Charlie fell off her broom and grazed her leg and spent half the day limping about saying she would have to have her leg 'ampulated' (amputated) which though Sirius didn't tell her was quite cute!

The pair of them watched Harry chase a toy snitch (which like toy brooms didn't go higher than a metre from the ground.) Sirius made a note that Harry would make a good seeker someday as he caught the snitch for the tenth time that hour.

At about four a clock there was aloud knock on the door. Sirius who conveniently was sat on the toilet when it sounded though the house nearly fell off it sideways. it made him jump so much. He wasn't used to having visitors. Regaining his composure he stood up, flushed the loo and walked down the corridor to the front door and the unexpected guest, who had been shown in by a limping Charlie and a giggling Harry.

Sirius stood there flabbergasted, as he saw none other than Remus Lupin stood in the cavernous hallway.

"Sirius..." Harry began

"Not now Harry!" Sirius Interrupted

"But Dad..." Charlie giggled

"I said not now!" Sirius hissed

"Sirius your fly is open!" Harry laughed obviously not able to keep his composure any longer! Charlie desolved into giggles too.

"Oh!" said Sirius as he quickly did his fly up.

"What are you doing here?" he asked blushing. Lupin's composed face had cracked into a smile.

"I guessed you would be staying here," he began "I wanted answers, I was thinking the other night, why, why would you turn Lily and James into voldemort (Sirius flinched)? Then I thought where would you be hiding it took awhile to think where you could be then last night it came to me. Here, our old home, it would be perfect for you! Its practically unplotable and hidden from muggle eyes for god sake you could do any form of magic here and the ministry wouldn't know even underage magic!"

"Have you tipped off the Ministry?" Sirius whispered his face a pale grey.

"No, I wanted answers and I wanted to give you a chance, you used to be a great friend, you trusted me so I am to give you a chance to tell me what really happened. I just couldn't see you as a deatheater that's all." Lupin smiled

"Come in then," Sirius said quietly "and you two go to your rooms I'll call you down later!" he added to Harry and Charlie who were hanging on the strangers every word.

With a lot of groaning (and limping in Charlie's case), the pair of them climbed the stairs to their rooms. Sirius led Lupin into the living room and sat on the sofa, Lupin sat opposite him in the old armchair and Sirius called on Pyre for some tea.

"So spill!" Lupin said pointedly

"Ok, well I suppose it begins two nights before Lily and James's Deaths...."

*~*~*~FLASHBACK~*~*~*

Lily, James and Sirius were sat around the potter's kitchen table, Lily was feeding a squirming Harry and James was flicking through Quidditch Today, Sirius was wringing his hands nervously.

"James?" Sirius asked

"Yes?" James answered

"I've had an idea, it may sound stupid..." Sirius began

"All your ideas tend to sound and be stupid Sirius that's what we've come to expect from you!" James laughed

"Any way, I thought, well maybe..." Sirius started

"Spill it!" Lily commanded while coaxing a temperamental Harry to eat a spoonful of baby food.

"I thought that if you change secret keeper from me to peter then, voldemort might come for me and you'd be safe! Even if he tortured me you'd still be safe!" Sirius blurted out

"I don't know..." James began

"That Sirius, is actually a good idea voldemort wouldn't think of peter he's so ... innocent!" Lily exclaimed

"When she puts it that way..." James smiled "let's do it!"

*~*~*~END OF FLASHBACK~*~*~*

"So it was peter who betrayed them!" exclaimed Remus

"Yes but in a way it's still my fault I suggested the switch!" Sirius said as he broke down

"I suppose you didn't tell me because you though I was the traitor?" Remus questioned

"Yes." Was all Sirius managed to say.

Then regaining his composure, he said "sorry."

"Don't worry about it!" Remus laughed "but what about the night when Peter cornered you and got blown up?"

"I cornered him, he cut of his finger, blew up the street and transformed!" Sirius sighed

"He's still out there?" Remus asked

"Probably" Sirius answered

"Does this mean you believe me and we're friends again?" asked a weeping Sirius

"Yes, I suppose it does, I believe you Sirius you haven't got the heart to kill..."

"If I had to kill anybody it would be my blasted mother she made my life living hell!" Sirius laughed "god I loathed her!"

"Yeah I could imagine you killing your mother you'd have good reason to! That's what I mean you couldn't kill with out good reason there was never a good reason to kill Lily and James not from your point of view any why!" Remus added

"Yeah you're a hundred percent correct! As always!" Sirius smiled

"So can I stay for a while?" Remus asked

"I've actually got to go back to Chester on Sunday evening." Sirius explained

"Why?" Remus asked

"I've enrolled Harry and Charlie in a school there, a muggle one, they have to wear disguises, but at least their getting some education" Sirius said regretfully

"I never thought you of all people would say that!" Remus laughed "shall I put my stuff in my old room? That is if I can stay till you leave on Sunday evening?" Remus asked

"Yeah! Great it will be good to have some company for a bit!" Sirius grinned "four year olds aren't much company!"

"Get settled in! I'll get the house elves to prepare a meal for six o'clock and I'll introduce you to the kids Harry probably doesn't remember you!" Sirius laughed happy to have one of his best friends back on his side after many long years.
