The fillet lies across her palm, diamond glittering against silver. The stone's facets divide the moonlight into three tints of white: the colors of stars, sheep, and Elven-trees.

She turns her hand slightly, watching bright spots shiver and dance on the darkened walls, and the fractured colors shift. The light gains a silver-gray cast, underlain by a faint glimmer of blue and a fourth shade of white like rolling foam. The colors of the sea play upon her fingers.

Her lips thin as she returns the fillet to its case.
